My precalculus tutor is showing up in 20 minutes! She doesn’t help me with a class she just teaches me the course to me

Pre-calc ended me. I did great in high school algebra. Geometry. Algebra II. Then pre-call was like running into a wall build of obfuscation for me. I want to conquer it before I die.

Get the PreCalc self study by Slavin and just keep doing the same problems again and again until you know it cold and then go to next section and repeat.
@MB-ff8ts10 ай бұрын
If you are reviewing and not seeing the material for the very first time, George Simmons Precalculus in a Nutshell is amazing. It is really short (120 pages) - do all of the problems in each section and you will be on your way to calc 1. Actually, you will end up proving a bunch of things along the way that most calc 1 students don't understand well.

Math has always been so difficult for me to comprehend. Even when I do well in it, I’m mystified. I do a problem, finish it, get it right and still wonder… “What in the heck did I just do?’

Some advise: 1. Study every day 2. Don't rush 3. Study sequentially, from topic to topic 4. Repetition is the key 5. Google for other point of view on explaining the same thing. Especially, graphical examples

I am following the pre calculus book from Stewart, Redlin and Watson, I have been constant for around 6 months now and am already more than half way, I find the book really easy to follow, it has tons of exercises and, illustrations and also I love that it never gives formulas without explaining how to demonstrate it.

Not to plug the "competition" too much, but in addition to what TMS said above, consider checking out Professor Leonard's lecture series on Precalculus here on KZbin. He's a great lecturer (on par with The Math Sorcerer, IMO) and explains everything in detail... not skipping a lot of steps and assuming pre-existing knowledge, like a lot of math instructors. His channel, along with TMS, are basically my top two places to go on KZbin for math help. Also, as a sidebar... things may have changed, but when I was in college, "Precalc" and "Trig" were not separate classes. In my day, Precalc was exactly the merger of "College Algebra" and "Trigonometry". At my school they labeled the courses as "Precalculus I" and "Precalculus II" where - loosely speaking - you could think of the former as basically a synonym for "College Algebra" and the latter as a synonym for "Trigonometry". Taught from the same book, of course. Then on top of that there were separate "College Algebra I" and "College Algebra II" courses which I think were intended for the folks who were not pursuing a major that required Calculus. Or you could do what I did and take all four classes, just to really immerse yourself in the stuff. 🙂

Professor Leonard is my favorite. I'm in calc 2 and my lecturer doesn't explain things in a way that makes sense to me. I'd be failing if it wasn't for him

I'm on video 26 of Pro. Leonard's Intermediate Algebra series. I watch his videos conjunction with Blitzer's Intro & Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Humongous Book of Calculus Problems, and a Calculus book by Marvin Bittinger. But this channel is the best channel for book recommendations. Most of the books I order come from the recommendations on this channel

I always used to wonder if there is any youtube channel which gives realistic advice to mathematics student and when I found you I was really surprised and happy. You are really great Math Sorcerer.

I focused on sharpening my algebra skills in precalc and memorizing trig identities and the unit circle. I'm hoping those 3 key takeaways will help me out next semester in calc.

Thanks I really needed this! I really can't wait to get to calculus it just all seems so exciting yet when I try to read my calculus book, it's like trying to read a book in a language I can't understand. I guess it just means that I must learn the prerequisites before jumping ahead of myself.

I remember having to drop out of Precalc cause the concepts and graphs were so new to me it was a jump from Algebra and Geometry. I was like what are limits and asymptotes when finding x = 0s. I didn't know they were just bounds where the graph just approaches but not touch the bounds, bounded above or below or left and right to the limit by concepts like -inf < x < inf or some convergent number, which is some continuous function idea. Then I was like what are logs or exponentials and why do square root graphs look like that. It was not until later that I learnt that they were rates at which something increases but at different rates. Trig was a jump from geometry when it came to studying angles and how they are used as signals or how the waves were drawing a shape of a circle when rotating the axis. There was another PEMDAS like neumonic to learn SOHCAHTOA. Then you got the laws of exponents and logarithms brush up and how they are inverses of each other and then simple algebra with linear algebra which is not really like the matrix multiplication of the tranposed inverses taught in subjects like Economics. You can tell this is just knowledge growing. Haha, anyway I retook it cause eventually Calculus is suppose to be a requirement all students have to meet, it all clicked and now the graphs help in understanding what equations it represents etc. I'm not a visual learner however, I understand equations better, but the graphs help so much that I understand it more now.

@carultch10 ай бұрын
It's about laying the ground work for calculus. Such as introducing limits, motivating the concept of a derivative without yet using that word, summations, Riemann sums to approximate integrals before you learn how to integrate, trig, log, and exponential identities, introduction of secant/cosecant/cotangent functions.

Unfortunately, I can't study Precalculus because there is no such subject in my country. What is studied in Precalculus is a subject of 8-9th grade at school in my country. Because 10-11th grade is what is called Calculus in America. In our country, it is called mathematical analysis.

Any advice for undergraduate Dynamical Systems books? I'm a physics undergrad in my 2nd year(Undergraduate for me is 3 years full time) and i go to the library to look for dynamical systems books and unfortunately they all seem to appear for graduate level mathematics students and above. Upon looking in them i don't see them cover the introductory stuff like maps, periodic points, orbits, omega and alpha limits, Sets etc. Any books you'd recommend? the book were recommended on our course is Dynamical Systems by Ian Percival but i don't seem to understand any of the contents page as relevant to my course. We are covering discrete dynamical systems at the minute and soon we will transition to Continuous Dynamical Systems? any recommendations ? many thanks

Since you mentioned James Stewart's book for Calculus, why not mention "Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus by James Stewart"? Here is the 13 ISBN for the 7th edition: 978-1305071759 and one for the solutions manual: 978-1305253612 Just as I typed this comment out I found out Stewart also has a book called: "Algebra and Trigonometry" 4th ed ISBN-13: 978-1305071742 Please note I haven't gone through the entire thing. I don't have a copy on me now. It was years since I've last been into mathematics, so I'm not sure if I can compare and contrast the two, or other books on Pre-calculus. Since I've been learning Mandarin Chinese, I do take into consideration if a book has a translation, which Stewart's Calculus has, I'm not sure about his Pre-calculus book. Just because a book doesn't have a translation doesn't automatically mean I won't work with it in that it can be significantly better than a book with a translation, but it is a significant minus for me. I may work with one, the other or both.
