I like Tom Hess' teaching approach. Very crisp, clear with no fluff or padding. Gets straight to the point.

It took me a long time to understand this method of learning but it's far and away the best way to understand - not your guitar fretboard but - how music actually works.

Tom Hess is a wealth of musical knowledge. Taking Break Through classes online and every time I have had a question I can find the answer on the forum, spelled out in black and white in the material provided or in a video such as this. Awesome ! Thank you Tom Hess !!

I love this concept. So logical and instantly applicable/functional. It brings to mind the saying "work smarter, not harder."

It makes sense that any interval combination - assessed using degrees, will shorten the difficulty of understanding music in any of the 12 keys. That's a good method for learning how to recreate the important part of music, the feeling it elicits. Nothing really described about the process of learning where those degrees, numbers, w/e are on the fretboard with a logical approach, though. Here at least. I suspect it has to do with relating the intervals emotional feeling to the tactile feeling of playing those intervals in memory.

There IS one advantage of knowing the names/positions of notes; and that’s to ID the key. If someone says “we’re in A minor” then you know what note to start on/focus on, but other than that it’s ALL intervalic formula from then on. Even though we’re not talking intervals, people do call this system “thinking intervalically” or using the scale formula. I’ve needed to learn letters to help ID keys with bands who don’t know theory at all, then therefore know where to start my solo. But thankfully guitar is all about shapes and positions that shift, so the number system is DEFINITELY the best

Intervals are great! :) I use both intervals and notes, mostly intervals though.

This video really blew my mind and I'm super excited to learn to think in terms of scale degrees. How would I practice this? Anyone here has some good exercises ?

I get exactly what ur saying . Notes tone relys on the before and after notes.
