I'm a dinosaur fan of the RE series. Despite knowing several versions of the game, I was unaware of these details. I originally played the PC title myself. A little later on PlayStation. It's good to know about these few cosmetic extras to enjoy the experience. There's one thing, sound effect of handgun Beretta was hilarious at the first time. Sounds more like silent gun for cap, not bullets. But it was first RE with one of the most beloved cheese dialogues. Still love it. Nice video Mr. Ocelot

Totally agree. The seamless HD project takes a lot of space and has a convoluted installation process. It end up looking very artificial (cause AI) so not for my liking. As of now, I prefer the DS version for the QOL improvements. I'm looking for a version that can be MODed, combining the best of each.

GREAT video, tho i want to add that you skipped over a few details on the PSX versions: the US/EU original release altered the difficulty a bunch by making each consumable that stacks (all ammo and ink ribbons) smaller and disabling aim snapping so you have to manually rotate towards an enemy every single time; the director's cut reversed ALL those changes, for both original and arrange mode, it has the same balancing as the JP version, then the US dualshock version for some reason redid all the numerical changes to consumables but only in original mode, NOT in arrange mode, tho it left the aim snapping alone. As for the DS version, its worth noting that the backgrounds are actually slightly lower resolution, 192p vs 240p, and the noninterger scaling + compression they used to convert them makes a lot of details quite fuzzy, on the other hand, they didnt JUST remake the models and animations, they also redid the textures as well, all of em, every single model has much higher res textures, you can see it in your own comparison with jill's hair having distinct ends rather than being an amorphous brown blob. As for the gameplay changes in that version, its based on the director's cut, meaning both classic and rebirth mods use the JP balancing and it includes the double ammo cheat, the rebirth mode is basically the arrange mode but with all of its new camera angles, costumes and unique unlocks (like the infinite magnum) removed, replaced with the stuff you mentioned. but they also added quick turning from RE3 and quick knife from RE4.

There are four versions of Resident Evil 1. It´s so good you also mentioned the one and only true authentic Director`s Cut which is a modified and hacked version of the Director´s Cut iso (non Dual-Shock version) with intro in colour, full legendary uncut head scene when the first zombie appears, and a few other goodies ;) absolutely worth playing. True conoisseurs only play the true Director´s Cut... I am so happy to finally have the real full version of Resi 1 after all these decades.

I still have the Russian PC release disc of RE2, which as a bonus includes the original 1996 version of RE1 (it's just untouched USA pc release, all in english). You can play it on Windows 10 without any problems by launching the game through DxWnd. You need to cap fps at 30 in the program's settings (need to turn on the Extended mode), so the game will work at correct speed and don't freeze in the Jill and Barry cutscene. The only downside of the retail version - the CD should be on the disc drive all the time, since the game's .exe file and movies folder all placed there. Overall thank you for the video!

I play the Director's Cut Dual Shock version on Duckstation with the true uncut mod. I have both original and infamous soundtrack versions. I also use the upscaled PC backgrounds. Sometimes set postprocessing to black and white because the game looks really cool this way.

Iam 36 and every time i want to play a game, i find myself paying always the same games as my child/teen age. Every time i turn on a Sega Saturn or a Playstation, resident evil is the almost always the game i want to play. I have Mister FPGA and a Sony PVM but nothing beats playing on real hardware and listening the CD spinning, or in case of saturn, seeing the acess light blinking.

I remember the first (and only) time I tried that version, I got to the L corridor with the zombie dogs shattering the windows and... Man, that was such a disappointing moment for me. I think I stopped the game right there and went looking for a version with the right soundtrack.

I am really thankful for what the Seamless HD mod community is doing, but yeah, if you want to classic with the RE, then then the original graphics look better and too jarring. for those that have a Switch with ''magic'' installed, the duckstation emulator is amazing, i'm playing all 3 resident evil ps1 games and it looks like in this video, i think it supports up to 1080p (i have it in 3x 720p and it's enough to offer a great screen resolution)....anyways...it's a way to replay these titles on the go again.

You don't need the files from the original PC version to run the SHDP. All you need to do is select the japanese version when you install the game from GOG. The mods will do the rest.

This should get more attention. If you own it on gog, you can choose to download/install the JP version no matter your region. That's all the "acquiring" you need to do to get the JP release for REbirth.

I became more and more fond of the Nintendo DS version. I also play it natively on my 3DS so I'm not stretching things out. Having the map on the botton screen and skipping door animations is the major plus for me. Overtime I just come to prefer it now. I did enjoy playing it on GOG though.

I do remember of playing Deadly Silence on an emulator (unsure which one it was, unfortunately). I remember having some issues with trying to snuff a bunch of lit candles using the microphone function (even with preset audio frequencies that the emulator could provide). Checking this video out, I am almost tempted to try the game on MelonDS and see if it's fully playable in Rebirth mode from beginning to end.

THe only feat missing between all versions and DS is that Deadly silence let you use the survival knife the same way as RE4. Not ground breaking but save you some bullets when the zombies were laying in the floor.

To me, the original PS1 Director's Cut (non-DualShock) played through DuckStation can't be beat despite the lack of uncensored scenes. Even better than the Rebirth patch. Same for RE2 and RE3.

There's a difference in a dialogue that makes PS1 wins over the Saturn Resident Evil 1996 version. When Barry is saving JILL from the PLANT, Barry's voice in the Saturn version sounds a lot weaker than what we hear in the PS1. As an user said, " I've never heard that recording of Barry's line before, and it sounds horrible. The original recording it replaced was one of the better deliveries in the game, believe it or not. If that was what it sounded like, I'd easily rank it as the worst performance in the whole game."

I would recommend the Directors Cut and DS Rebirth mode versions. The Directors Cut is basically the same as the original Japanese PS1 release though highly censored for western audiences. While the DS Rebirth version is a remix of the original with Less censorship than the PS1 version and added quality of life changes like on screen map, new puzzles and you can touch Jills chest and behind!

These are my impressions strictly concerning the sound and music side🔉of the portings: the old pc windows version, I don't know about the new one, has sound effects identical to the '96 ps1 version (in the spicific I don't know if more muffled), but these are trifles, after all, as far as the auditory quality on pc was concerned, one's sound card and related came into play (at least in this title). Instead in the saturn one sometimes finds lower volume dubbing, sound effects, especially zombie wails, are different from the ordinary versions; to reiterate, the term 'different' does not mean inferior. The soundtrack played by the saturn, although no one seems to have noticed, seems to me to offer a few more frequencies that return vaguely cleaner, fuller-bodied music. I don't know whether credit is due to the group that handled the difficult porting, or simply to the console's internal yamaha-tagged chip. I look forward to criticism, enrichment and comparisons...thank you ☺

To me it's a toss up between The DS version and PC. Not being able to skip doors is hard to go back to. And to me, if one chooses Deadly Silence on Melon DS. Set either L3 and R3...or the triggers to toggle Full-screen and screen-swapping respectively and just swap to the map with your screen swap button when you need it!

As of today most graphically advanced version from what I read is Resident Evil PC PowerVR edition, it have better textures and insane 800x600 resolution. But it runs on PVR graphics like Kyro 2 i guess.

The cutscenes in the US and Japanese releases of PS1 Director's Cut was a mistake. The later released Europe PAL release had the proper uncensored cutscenes, but has letterboxing borders and 17% slower gameplay due to bad NTSC to PAL conversion, albeit since the game is completely unoptomized, by forcing NTSC in DuckStation settings, you could possibly get an identical expetience to NTSC. NTSC forcing works bad when the game is PAL optimized - runs the same speed as NTSC, often with next to no letterboxing due to overscan cropping, and then forcing NTSC would make the game run too fast. Also the original Japanese PS1 release has a different ending and cast intro song, along with the original American PS1 release being more difficult - Director's Cut and later reverted to the Japanese difficulty
