Great video, guys! I totally understand what you mean by the accuracy of the N64's analog stick. I purchased multiple N64 Virtual Console titles on Wii and Wii U, and both felt off compared to playing on original hardware. The analog stick dead zones were way too large on both setups and I just couldn't get into personal favorites via those platforms, like Star Fox 64 or F-Zero X. I've also had terrible luck finding a good replacement N64 analog stick. Original Nintendo analogs or bust. The super fine movement that's capable thanks to the original N64 analog stick is crucial to the enjoyment of games like Super Mario 64, and many, many other 3D platformers from the era.

11:04 as a PAL player, I'll give you some advice. Only the original charcoal gray consoles supported S-video, it was stripped from all subsequent models including semi translucent and Pokemon models. Worse still, the multi out is wired differently between regions and Nintendo only replaced S-video cables in NTSC regions. Using an official Nintendo cable or even a well made third party NTSC S-video cable on a PAL system will produce an image that's why too bright. You have to buy a cable designed for a PAL system. It's not that bad. As stated in the video, 25 FPS is still a higher framerate than most N64 games, plus it's actually a consistent framerate, too (no lag in the Submarine section of Dire Dire Docks, unlike the NTSC Versions). The lower overall speed is only noticeable if you're directly comparing it to the other versions, but it actually helps with some tricks, like the 50 Star Door BLJ and Bomb Clipping.

I remember actually revisiting SM64 lately via the PAL-version as that's what I grew up with... and finding as slow and bit "cumbersome" to play through as I remember. It felt like weights got lifted off the plumber's feet and allowed me to control him in more fluid, bouncier ways. I own so many copies of this game (For Example, The N64 version, both the Wii and Wii U VC, and 3d Allstars). Super Mario 64 was the first Video Game I ever played, even though I was born in 2002. My uncle had an N64 when he was a kid, and he gave it to me. It was just so fun to just explore the castle mess around outside peaches castle and stuff, and it just felt so good to explore the levels and collect stars. I think I beat it when I first played it, Although my memory is a little fuzzy because I was five. I think Super Mario 64 was the reason I always preferred nonlinear or exploration-based games, it was so open and there were many different ways to collect stars and go through the game and something about its open-ended and explorative nature must've just clicked with me.

Thanks for the video and the level of detail and attention this game deserves. I think it finally made me realize how much using the original controller means. I've been trying for ages to replay this but it always ends up with frustrations over the controls - or lag. Even this years' attempt with real hardware almost ended prematurely due to using third party controllers. I'll be playing it a lot more using an original controller on an RGB modded console before turning to the All-stars package. Speaking of which, in my opinion, what they did is exactly the right way to put those games on a modern display. The scaling looks fantastic, and if the controls feel natural, it may become my go-to SM64 fix.

Unfortunately, that's their bias. Sometimes the official emulation is good (but usually on par and much later than unofficial efforts), and sometimes the emulation will be crappy and they'll still cover it like it deserves to be the only game in town.

Thank you for actually giving at least a few positives about the collection. Others like KingK said it was "pathetic" just because there were minimal enhancements, despite the fact that the Mega Man X Legacy Collection doesn't get criticized nearly as much for also not including widescreen in X7 and X8 (both of which are 3D) and having pretty bad input latency that's actually worse then 3D All-Stars (with the PS4 version of the collection being the least responsive, according to GigaBoots). I know it has more content but more content doesn't save a collection if it doesn't play right. The original Japanese and North American releases of Super Mario 64 were actually built by the software compiler without optimisations enabled, apparently because there was a bug in the compiler. The bug was fixed in time for the PAL and Shindou releases, so those do have compiler optimisations. The result is that there is less slowdown in the game overall, which is particularly noticeable in Dire Dire Docks. I like playing the Shindou version for that reason. 38:00 the GameCube adapter DOES work with 3D All-Stars insofar that it’s recognized by the Switch as a USB controller. Of course, you’ll be missing some key functions across all three games, so you won’t be able to use the ground pound in Mario Sunshine or the gyro pointer in Galaxy. Not to mention you can’t remap the buttons, so with the default controls, ymmv. And while Nintendo could have allowed it to fully function with Sunshine, since it was a, you know, GameCube game, they chose not to support it since you can’t readily buy the adapter anymore in stores.

You can actually remap the buttons, but it has to be done through the Switch’s internal Settings. To prevent you from potentially screwing yourself over, the Switch will actually REMIND you that you’ve remapped things when you hit the Switch’s Home button, and give the option to reset it to normal. You can also save up to four preset remappings per controller.

It should be noted that the controls for 3D All-Stars can be remapped however you want; however it has to be done through the Switch’s internal Settings menu. You can have up to four custom layouts per individual controller, and the Switch will remind you when you hit the Home button that you’ve changed things and give you the option to revert them to normal. While it doesn’t fix Sunshine’s un-inversion unless you REALLY want to invert your movement too, it does mean you can have a more natural(read: Using the GCN pad with 8bitdo’s adapter) control scheme for it.

Going back to it on Switch, SM64 is a little dated compared to modern standards, mainly with camera controls. For years I considered it a perfectly aged game, even with modern controllers. And I still think he moves nearly flawlessly, other than some small issues with turning. Regardless of how the camera can feel a little less than ideal, I think it's a masterpiece. I had never before been so blown away by a game as a kid. Just running around the castle was an experience like no other. Even going back to it so many years later, even with a controller it wasn't made for, with all the ideals of modern gaming in mind, it's one of the best. A masterpiece in every sense

I really appreciate seeing the analog stick tests. When I first tried emulating SM64 years ago I realized just how big of an issue getting the analog stick to feel right is. Completely agree about the Switch pro controller feeling just right for the analog controls. My regret with the game is they had to mess with the camera, despite your guys very logical explanation on why left and right are "opposite", I still just can't get used to it. I also wish they took a crack at improving the camera, as much as I love this game, the camera really starts to get on my nerves in the later levels like Tick Tock Clock. Maybe someday they'll remaster SM64 and combine the best of both worlds for the original and DS versions.
@mylifeingaming4 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] I've thought about this a bit, and the conclusion I've come to is if they were gonna remake Mario 64... I'd rather they just make a whole new game instead. I think Mario 64 DS would've been a better game if they didn't have to stick to much of how Mario 64 controls and how the levels were designed, and instead came up with a new 3D game that was designed from the ground up for snappy Dpad controls. I kind of feel like Mario 64 only makes sense in the context of its original form. If you change any one aspect - the camera, the controls, or the level designs - then I wonder if the other aspects of the game seem out of place. For instance, I don't know if there's anything special about the level design in the game in particular, but if Mario's controls were "modernized," then I'm not so sure the levels make sense anymore. But the way they are, they work beautifully together. It's just such an interesting game where every aspect of the design is kind of interconnected in a way that I feel makes it difficult to change any one aspect and for the rest to still make sense.

I like the DS port but to me it feels more like of an alternate version than a remake. To my understanding a remake has improved graphics, controls or audio over the original. In this case I feel some aspects are actually worse. The characters models are updated but they look so blocky. The controls are also not as precise as the original. I think it would be more precise to call it a "sidegrade", where some stuff improved and other aspects worsened.

"Given the overall barebones nature of the AllStars project... it seems the team was very small... and didn't have the BUDGET for features..." Hang on a second, Nintendo (THE Nintendo) did not have the budget for their Premier intenational IP!? The single most recognizable videogame character in the world, the most VALUABLE videogame IP in all of history, and you're telling me Nintendo didn't have the BUDGET to treat the franchise accordingly!? How can you NOT think this is a cash grab?
@mylifeingaming4 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] I don't get mad at the people who MADE the product, the actual devs who had no control over how much budget they got, how much time they had, and work circumstances that may have been difficult in 2020. They no doubt worked their butts off given what they had. So I respect their work. I don't rate a game based on whether I think poor business decisions were made. I don't care to belittle the work of the people in the trenches. Do you really think they were just chuckling to themselves about how they could get away with doing so little work? No, they did the best they could, and the end product is still an improvement. Would I have liked more? Sure. But I'm too old to get riled up over video game business, I just want to enjoy what the devs made.
@ivaldi134 жыл бұрын
@@mylifeingaming First, you're redirecting his criticism. The criticism is that Nintendo (as a whole) made this a lazy cash grab, not that some specific dev team is somehow totally to blame for everything that is wrong in . . . their project. Second, you're suggesting the oppositely polar position, that the dev team involved bears *no* blame whatsoever for *their* project, they *definitely did their best with what they had*, and all shortcomings are others' fault. This is just as intellectually bankrupt as the straw man that you made of the OP's argument. Third, video game business is business. Media is media, and media is a business. People have standards. It's mature to have standards and to keep to them. It's not mature to hold no standards. It's also immature to suggest that someone else lacks maturity because they hold standards which you do not. Finally, you literally just got paid to research and talk about options for gaming, just to admit at the end that you're not really going to discuss the true best options, i.e. the ones that everyone around our age groups already knew to be the answer, PC. The fuck are you on about, 'too old to take video game business seriously?' Get over yourself. The vid waa good enough, but if you're half as mature as you want to feel you are, you could stand to take a step back and adjust your attitude a mite.
