The BEST way to record BASS covers for YouTube (in my opinion)

Hello and Merry Christmas!
Today I have another one of them talky-type videos to share with you all :)
If you’ve been around for a while (like I mean a REALLY long time), then you may remember the ‘how to record bass covers’ video I made many years back. This is sort of an updated version! I thought it’d be interesting to share with you guys how I now record my bass covers and compare it with how I used to.
Thanks to the folks and Focusrite for helping make this video a reality. I have been using the Scarlett 2i4 for ages and ages, no joke! Also thanks to MonkCustom Enterprise in Taiwan for their continued kind support.
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
Headphones and Microphone: from Fousrite Scarlett 2i2 studio kit
Wireless system: NUX B-5RC 2.4GHz Wireless system for Guitar/Bass
Finally, this video may be the last 'monthly' video in a while because of hand-nerve issues, school/work and real life stuff taking priority. Future uploads are likely to be more sporadic, but do stick around, I'd appreciate it! :)

Just a tip: for your mic input, use line mode instead of inst. You wanna use line for anything with amplification, like a condenser microphone, a synth, or with a pre-amp, etc. Also, a cool technique you might like is to record both the bass plugged into the Scarlett and the mic from the amp, and mix them together. You can do it with the 2i2, since it has 2 channels and the stereo output in the back and direct monitoring.
@graeschnahmoffski5716
@graeschnahmoffski5716 8 ай бұрын
Hi, don't know if you still exist, but would you care explaining it a bit more? I don't get how you'd connect the guitar to the amp if it is already plugged into the interface (connecting the afore-mentioned stereo output to the amp via a "stereo to mono" cable?) Also, I never had any issue connecting my guitars to a pre-amp (tsakalis multicab, forgot the name of the other) and then connecting the pre-amp to the interface using pure instrument mode, so I'd love to hear your reasoning behind it.
@Tonceitoys
@Tonceitoys 7 ай бұрын
You could use a DI Box for your bass so you have two output signals. One goes for the amp itself the other to the first input of the interface at the same time. And then with the sound coming from the amp you can use a mic and use the 2nd input of your interface for it. Now you have two signals, one direct from your bass and the other from the mic of the amp.

I like the sound of the mic. I’m a little wary of using wireless for recording; but wow. The interface sounded the best. I’ve been recording direct for a few years and I just recently went back to mic’ing the cab. Let’s say it takes some tricks and several effects pedals to get a really mic-ready tone. I finally achieved The Tone.

Protip! If you want the best tone (in my personal opinion) take both the direct out from your bass and have your amp mic'd up as well. this way you get the character of your cabinet and amplifier while maintaining the clarity and definition of a DI signal.

The Scarlett interfaces are fantastic pieces of gear. I've also been using one for ages and I can't say enough good things about the quality of the sound and the ease of use. One thing though, I would recommend against using wireless in this context. Wireless can introduce interference, noise, and latency to your signal which will be detrimental to the quality of your recording.

Just wanted to add on to some AMP MIC setup that you did not go into. If you use the Amp Mic method, you have a whole lot of options to adjust your setup, either you can put your mic in the center of the speaker and a more balanced and whole sound, or you can have it more on the rims of it, you can also experiment with a two mic setup if you want to. That is all, and great video by the way, hope you have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Edit: Forgot to say that you can also do the same kind of things on some music software, but so far many professionals do it the old fashion way.
@dighawaii1

Yep! You're right about everything here! (I just want to point out that you happen to be speaking into the 180 degree side of that mic, though. It still works, and you may have intended to do it for some reason, but that's the "rejection" side of this particular mic. Most side-address mics denote the 0 degree direction with a polar pattern design. Aloha!)

A mix of method 2 + method 4 is the best. One of my fav players on youtube does it like this. Method 4 is more defined but the low end is so rich when you record from the amp like in method 2. So mixing both is the way to go. Sadly I only do method 4 for my covers but I use Amplitube to emulate an amp. Not ideal, but I'll get a mic when I can to record from the amp as well. Nice vid, like your dedication :)

Normally in the studio we would ALWAYS also record the DI, not just through amp cab mics or ambience mics. Combining them both is the best way to get the best results. Check the specifications on that wireless rig... most of them have a high-pass filter at about 50Hz , which means you're loosing most of your BASS through the wireless transmission. I'd use the DI first channel straight into the bass on your best cable... AND the mic on your amp... record them as separate mono tracks together symultaneously and then you can play with a mix of the two tones for endless cominations or to find your favourite. Also that scarlett logo is the front of the mic.... would sound a lot better if you record the front (Logo Side) of the mic, as it is a side-address large diaphram condenser and the heart shaped (Cardioid) pattern means you're talking into the rejection zone of that mic :) Hope that helps

i think the 4th method is the most versatile singular method. if you're willing to try it though, i'd suggest both mic'ing your amp and plugging direct in. you get the best of both worlds, imo. your direct tone, you can hit a little harder with compression and lo-pass it to around 150-250hz depending on your tone, and get a girthy low end, while high passing the microphone sound around the same frequency and having your midrange and high end less compressed and having more of your room sound/air to create a cohesive, full range sound. that's how i've been tracking bass for all of my recording sessions lately. if you try this, you'll likely have to delay your di track by a couple-few milliseconds. just go a few at a time til you hear the low end sync up~
