I acquired TTM earlier this year and in my opinion it has made a huge difference in my tone and playing. The modules are well organized and provide much needed detail and support. I continue to go back and review the lessons semi-regularly, and I incorporate the key exercises in every one of my practice sessions. As this has been the best investment I have made in my saxophone journey, I highly recommend this course if you want to break through and improve your overall tone.

Jamie. This course is awesome. I’ve had it for a while as tone is THE number one thing. It made a huge difference and other (more proficient sax players/better than me) often comment on my full tone and I always refer them to you and the TTM course. I refer to it every few days as there’s always something I can do in the course to get better. A game changer. Thank you!

I have taken the Total Tone Mastery course...TWICE. I have to say that everyone that listens to my playing all comment on my really pretty tones. Very controlled and pleasing to the ear. My fingering and jazz phrasing can always use some improvement, but my strength is my tone thanks in great part to this class. I will probably go through the lessons every 6 months or so, because there is no way that my tone is perfect and I can always get better. Fantastic for all levels of saxophonists. From beginner to professionals, this program will help you! Many courses jump from the very elementary to the quite difficult, but this course takes you through each step building upon the previous step. Not at all frustrating! Thanks you Jamie.

For years upon years I loved owning a saxophone, but could not get enthused about any practice time because it sounded thin and sickly when I played. I spent years thinking that some had sax talent and some did not, and I was a "did not". Then TTM came along. I've gone thru the whole course once and go back often to refresh and reinforce the details. I now love the sound that comes out of the horn now when I blow it. To me, this should be step number one for anyone wanting to improve their sax playing. I wish I had something like this years ago, but I'm quite happy to have found it now. Thanks so much Jamie!

I have been following the TTM course and the many exercises for about 12 months and my tone has really improved. I have been playing tenor sax for 3 years and I am just about happy with my sound, but still not consistent yet. As an ex clarinet player in my childhood (50 years ago!!) I had trouble with an over firm embouchure, even after all these years. The TTM course has allowed me to relearn from scratch.

Dear Jamie, The improvement tone on my alto and tenor saxophones since I started your Total Tone Mastery course has amazed me and my wife had noticed the improvement in my sax sound! I also want to let you know I had a breakthrough last month. I hit some altissimo notes during practice on my alto! (I actually thought I would hit altissimo on tenor first, lol) I owe it all to you and your TTM course! My apologies for making this message painfully long, but I want you to know I’m paying attention and doing what you lay out for us in your TTM course; and I want you to know it works if you work it! :) I bought your course back in February, and have been mostly following it in sequence. My goal is to improve my 50+ year old tone on my alto and tenor saxophones, the bane of my sax playing before now: thin, weak; not the full, rich, reedy tones I was hearing in my favorite sax artists and solos. And to learn altissimo, something I never tried or thought I needed, until I transcribed Dick Parry’s solos Us and Them and Money from my favorite album ever. I then realized I need to learn altissimo. And I want my sax tone to be like Dick Parry’s: a dark, smoky, jazz rock sound. My timeline for these goals is about a year from start, circa Feb 24. The first part of TTM on breathing I grabbed a hold of and did the exercises and decided not to play my saxophones until I got that right. In May, I felt ready to pick up my horns again, when I moved on to the embouchure portion. That’s when you showed the Joker exercise and I latched on to that like a pit bull! I do that exercise every day that I’m not playing. My reps are 20 counts Joker smile, 20 counts pucker face, 60 bpm; 15 reps per set, 3 sets; 2 - 3 times a day. Now my embouchure muscles don’t get tired during my 1 1/2 to 2 hour practices. :) Learning to play with my new and correct goldfish embouchure, rather than my old, smiley embouchure that gave me a thin, weak tone that I was never happy with, was almost like starting to learn to play all over again; lots of squeaks and squawks and missed notes. But I’m sticking with the course, and it’s paying off big time! :) In July, I started exercising my vocal tract and using it more in practice. I’ve started to learn how to growl by humming, something I hadn’t tried; I can growl using my epiglottis and tongue, but want to use all three techniques. The humming is a softer growl for me. I looked ahead in the TTM course and went through the rest of it and printed all the exercises for long tones and overtones; I had already printed all the exercises for embouchure, mouthpiece, and vocal tract, and put together a practice binder for alto and tenor combined. I started practicing long tones and overtones. I have always tried altissimo at the first 5 - 10 minutes of every practice session for 4 years now, not knowing what you teach before July. I have used altissimo fingerings for E, F, and F# for awhile. Usually when I tried notes above F#, nothing would come out, not even a squeak. I watched, tried, and practiced exactly how you say the shape your vocal tract the right way, tongue down, vellum back, lower jaw forward on the mouthpiece. I have stayed with it, and in early August, I got a altissimo G out! Yayyyyyy!! And Thursday I got out high G, A, and B flat/A#! I was so excited that I ran to my wife and told her!! She was happy for me! (She’s put up with a lot of squeaks and squawks!) And my wife said my sax sound was getting better and better. I am happy with how my tone is sounding better and better on both my alto and tenor saxophones every practice session! I was able to buy 2 new saxophones as retirement gifts. I bought my tenor sax 4 years ago and new alto last year. My gear and setups are: Yanagisawa TWO10 tenor, with a Jody Jazz HR Dark 7 mouthpiece and Vandoren #3 ZZ Jazz reed; and a Selmer Supreme alto, Jody Jazz HR Dark 7 mouthpiece and Vandoren #3 ZZ Jazz reed. Thank you so much, Jamie, for being such an amazing person and awesome teacher! Thank you for willing to share your 30+ years experience with everyone! Your course is worth so much more than the price of admission! I have more work to do before I’m comfortable sharing videos, but I’ll send you a couple when I am, target date: the end of this year. Thankfully, Calvin

I have had TTM for a while and it has made a huge difference to my tone and taken my playing to another level. Well done Jamie and thank you so much! The modules are logical and easy to work through at your pace/ as time allows. I am finding now as my playing is progressing (and bad habits creeping in!) that it’s worth revisiting the course.

Jaime: A terrific course that has helped me an incredible amount. Having come from being an Altisimmo Trumpet player I wasn't polluted by Clarinetic instruction, but I had an excess of facial muscle strength that I tried to use on the Saxophone. During the Pandemic lockdown, I resolved to re-engineer all aspects of my playing and eventually found your KZbin material, especially Total Tone Mastery. It totally revolutionized my tone starting with my embouchure. Some of the impact of this course occurred this summer when I played with the MD All-State Community Band - an auditioned entry group featuring ~70 of the best amateur musicians who still play for fun in our state. Although I picked up Saxophone at 50 I was able to keep up with my mates who appeared to have started playing in their youths. No complaints, no issues just a smooth consistent tone throughout the range of the horn up to Altissimo G. Get this course.

Sounds so beautifully when you play Jamie. I am slowly getting better every time I pick up the sax. My embouchure and altissimo has increased drastically and I know it is the most important and makes a tremendous difference in my sax sound. However, I seriously believe I dont have the right equipment (mouthpiece, ligature, reed ) which purchased second hand really cheap including my sax... making it very difficult to get my tones.. So I have to work extra hard for the sounds I want and not always consistent. I probably need new pads too. I never played anything professional so I would not know how good my sax is until I can try one out eventually.. My funds are extremely tight rt now unfortunately or I would join your masterclass and purchase better equipment. I make due for now and love to practice .Thank you for another great informative video!🙂

Jamie - Love your "stuff" - tone, - ALL of it! I came across Elan Trotman playing "Oh, Happy Day" and he too, gets a great tone. I found just playing along with him, I find I mimick him and get a very similar tone. I did this the same with Paul Desmond on Alto - same result. So-o-o-oo I conclude that jamming with a player with whom I admire the tone, is a great help to get the tone I'm looking for! I've tried it with different setups with very similar results. Thanks for all you do.....

Jamie, i also want to let everyone know how you helped me transform my tone. Even though i still need more practice, your Total Tone Mastery course is incredibly effective and i absolutely recommend anyone who wants a better tone to follow your course. I have followed your course for over 2 years now and nothing online or by anyone else on KZbin (although some saxophonist mean well) matches your methods of teaching how to play the saxophone.🤓🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷By the way 5 horns is the top of Excellent rating.

The TTM course is the definitive explanation of how to improve your tone. It is thorough, structured and progressive and the exercises are easy to understand - though often somewhat less easy to get right! This course does not require 'skill' or 'ability' or 'flair' - just dedication to follow the steps, and the capacity to record yourself in order to hear the progress you will inevitably make. I still struggle with all the things Jamie references, upper register tuning being a particular bugbear, but I know that my tone has improved beyond recognition by following this course. Highly recommended.

Thank you so much for video on "your latest trick". I am an adult begginer and my father always told me to learn this. But of course it was too difficult - all these sharp notes, that i didnt even know what the fuck hashtags meant at the time. And still it was difficult, but your video made it much easier. Does this include pointers on how to produce a more airy, smokey, whispery tone, as well? Or do you have any videos on it already? it seems that going loose with the embouchure and extra strong on the diaphragm is the way to go, especially with some reed and mouthpiece parameters but... That's all I can find on it, nothing even remotely specific.

I think classical guitar (or fingerpicking in general) is universally done worse than sax. I've never once, not EVER had a person come to me who thinks they can already play (self taught or teacher taught) that sound anything less than insipid and quiet. I mean so quiet I have to lean forward to hear them when they're sat in front of me. And the effort of leaning forward was not worth the effort! I think the effect is far worse than on sax. I had a grade 6 student come to me the other day. He sounded just as bad as I just described. AND HE PASSED EXAMS! Ever heard a folk guitarist who can make anything like as much sound when fingerpicking as strumming? No, they go pathetically quite. I even heard a guitarist with obnoxious tone playing at an event in a film.
