I wanted to share this with you. I came home from work the other day and my kids greeted me with huge smiles. "We got leaves for you mommy" To my surprise they had bagged the neighbors leaves and made some money too. I had 12 bags in total and they were beyond proud that they had helped me source compost material . The end

Many years ago, my late aunt in Indiana caught three kids sneaking into her tomato patch and taking green tomatoes to use to play ball with. She told them they were going to turn red and that they were to eat. She took them to a store and bought them each a real ball. Then she taught them how to grow their own tomatoes and nurture them to become something good to eat. The following spring she showed them how to plant them, water them, and get them growing to produce ripe fruit. She didn't think they had ever had a real tomato, home grown. I'm sure they were in awe of the whole process, and that they developed a respect for a person willing to teach about where real food comes from. This story still sticks in my mind many decades later. My dear aunt, bless her heart and soul for making the world a better place. Cheers, Scott Bob in Montana

Kids love to garden, they dont like the wait. But last year when planting my spring garden out of the blue I ended up with all of the neighborhood kids helping me plant! It was great and I really like the idea of teaching others how to garden.

"When one teaches, two learn", is a powerful quote by Robert Heinlein. I was thinking of this quote throughout this video. I'm teaching my seven year old to garden, and he's teaching his nan! He was in her garden and his little commentary went something like this: "Oh, I see you have some bok choi here, and some lettuce as well. Good job, nan!" Ha ha ha! He's a charming little gardener!

Thank you for this video. My dad started teaching me gardening when I was 4 yrs old... some of my happiest memories of childhood, following my dad around like his shadow. He was so patient. He taught me common and Latin names. I'm now 70 and have had a lifelong love affair with gardens. When I lived in a tiny studio apartment on French Riviera decades ago, I grew my own salads in discarded fruit boxes. Now in retirement, I have several gardeners living around me and we talk plants and gardening all the time. Gardening keeps me fit and relatively sane, better than any therapist I've talked to, ever! Now, I talk to the plants, the worms, the spiders, the snakes, the bees and all of my garden friends. It's not a bad way to live, for sure. And veggies taste so much better when they were living minutes before!

My grandson just graduated from NYU school of nursing (yes, I am bragging). His goal I’d to work and live in NYC, but he has to be able to have a garden. Be still my heart. Thank you Scott for your great work. Now to make a worm farm on the sly!

Wonderful points you bring up here! I have been watching lots of Gardening videos over the last year and started gardening again. I discovered how much my Dad knew! I was his sidekick growing up and he had a wonderful garden. In watching these videos I have come to understand more about why he did what he did. I have learned to appreciate the depth of knowledge and wish I had paid better attention to what he was doing. Having videos like yours really helps and I can say I am so grateful a master gardner was patient with me most of the time. I taught my kids some basic gardening but that was mostly flower gardening. I wish I would have taught them how to grow and maintain a vegetable garden.

I've been binge watching your videos for the past few weeks, I really can't get enough of it. I never thought I would actually be so interested in gardening, but it's already done wonders for my mental and physical health. Sometimes just being with your plants is meditative. Right now, I only have space for container gardening, but I've been doing all kinds of research on root development and soil needs so that my veggies can really thrive in their pots versus getting all root bound and stressed out. I know there's only so much you can do, but I want my plants to do as best as they can given what I have to work with. It's great stuff, and I can't wait until next year when I CAN plant in the ground, AND in containers! Thanks Gardener Scott :)

Amen. When I was young and had children sure I taught them but I never knew the value of teaching them. Now that I'm in my early 60s and have grandchildren I know the value of teaching them I'm a backyard gardener and I do my best to teach my grandchildren everything about it right down to Growing what they want to grow and seen it mature I guess that's how I feel when I grow something there's so much satisfaction in it but to see them is absolutely amazing, just one example my five year old granddaughter wants to grow pumpkins she is so excited about it it's unbelievable. I've said all that just to confirm what you have taught in this video.

Once again, I’m so impressed with your knowledge and wisdom. Very different those two are, but you have them. I’m guessing you also have management and leadership skills too, just based on this video. I’ve “taught” a lot of things and some of that to youth. From The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, setting goals, to birding. When you know you have to teach someone else, your own learning becomes much more focused. You may take notes, use highlighters, etc and each of those help you to learn more too. Just because you read it, say it, and write it multiple times. But the act of doing it has so much more impact. Practice, practice and practice. So very happy that I’ve found your videos and appreciate your sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

I agree 100%! I am only an ok gardener, but I have had many opportunities to teach and garden with children. I learn something EVERY time, but my favorite part is seeing the wonder anew with them, the excitement over even little things, and the tenderness they show. A few of my favorites... 1. After planting, my daughter likes to "write it's name" on a rock. We started this so we could identify species, but she does it so "it knows it's loved sooo much!" She takes pains to find the prettiest rock. 2. My son as a toddler learned his friend was coming for a playmate and set 2 colander by the back door in anticipation! 3. We did small root gardens by wrapping clear plastic cups with construction paper and planting bean seeds for toddlers at church during a creation unit. Seeing the sprout come up, the kids gathered around and whispered "hi" and waved. When we opened the paper to see the roots, one little guy who normally was very exuberant, turned to me wide eyed and asked, "Jesus really loves my bean, doesn't he?" Then he looked at the bean again, whipped his head back to me with this little revelation, "And I get to love something he loves!" We had to water with droppers so the plants didn't get too much love!

18 months ago we sold our previous home that is full of veggie, fruit and perennial gardens to a couple from the city who claimed they knew very little about gardening. Now, 18 months later, I am still in touch with the couple and am advising options on how to care for the gardens. It’s wonderful to know they are interested in taking over, maintaining and improving what we left behind. They have been very grateful for the help and have also learned to seek out alternative sources for garden info.You might be interested to know that I recommended your vlog to them just today. I haven’t had an opportunity to teach children. I guess I don’t have the touch as our daughter told me a couple decades ago that she’d rather have a migraine than help me in the garden.🥴 Perhaps asking her to help me was the wrong approach. However today, she welcomes ideas and advice when she sees how well our garden grows!!!🌺

I've learnt so much from you throughout the past year. I've always loved gardening, but never had the space to get it done until I learnt about planting in pots. Then I've had so many of them died on me, that I questioned my knowledge about gardening. I couldn't understand why, considering that I learnt botany, but just as you said, knowing something and actually doing it are two different things. Now I'm taking your encouragements and now re-learning before I practice. Then I can post my steps on my own channel. Thank you so much!

Another wonderful job Scott. These principles and research of learning through teaching is well known. Recently, a neighbor (who is an avid gardener) suggested we have a gardening table that I be the expert at a community event. I was humbled by the comment, but taken aback because I by no means feel comfortable to be in this position. While my evolution has continued over the last eight years, my journey in gardening has for the most part been introspective. My wife has stated that my eyes light up when the conversation turns to the topic of gardening. I guess it is the label my neighbor has placed on me (and when I sit behind the table that has me feeling uncomfortable. You are definitely correct how the dynamics change when I teach my two children.

I use to love spending time in the garden with my children . Their enthusiasm as they see things come alive is awe inspiring. I have a funny story to share . I had my garden all prepared and the seeds ready to plants, rows were marked, watering lines place, mulch ready and when that day came my youngest daughter wanted to "help" . So out to the garden we went. I was putting out tomato seeds when she asked me "why do you put tomato seeds in the dirt ? " . I told her "to grow some great fresh tomatoes for our salads". Then I was planting another seed and she asked "why" , I told her "to grow that fresh veggie". Ok, she was happy and we had fun planting what we had to go in the garden for the day. We decided to go sit on the front porch and relax when I noticed the bird feeders were near empty. I got the box of bird seed and went to the feeder and she tagged along. As I opened the first feeder she asked "Mom , what are you doing now"? I told her " Putting bird seeds in the bird feeders" . She said with such an confused tone "Are you going to grow birds too?" I could not answer , I almost fell over laughing.

Hi Gardener Scott. I'm Rinoto from Indonesia I learned a lot of organic gardening from Gardener Scott's KZbin channel. I have learned organic gardening a few years ago until now. I was offered by a Pastor for a presentation on how to do organic gardening to his congregation. Give me advice, what should I prepare, convey, and do?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Kebun. I believe the most important thing about organic gardening is to recognize how mother Earth allows plants to grow and try to do the same. No chemicals. Encourage beneficial insects. Use leaves and grass as mulch. Use the kitchen and garden waste to make compost and then use that compost to improve soil. For your presentation, prepare examples of how plants grow in Indonesia. Find stories from other gardeners about what plants are successful, what methods are good, and mistakes that they made. Start by growing plants that are native to Indonesia. If you create a system where good insects and birds are eating the bad insects, where you are working with nature and not against it, you can have a successful organic garden. It can be hard work and there will be problems and mistakes, but it is worth it. Good luck.

I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you for making high quality videos about being a gardener. I got choked up a bit when you talked about children too. My kids have learned if they can’t find me, I’m out in our garden. I’ve had the most wonderful conversations with my children there. I taught my 5 year old how to “deadhead” marigolds with the sheers. Later that week I heard him try to be the expert by explaining what that was to my husband. I even heard him say “attract pollinators”. My 7 year old loves to count the seedlings as they pop up. Hearing her say “nasturtium” and chat away about how much they’ve grown and how you can eat any part of it was a weekly highlight as well. My 10 year old likes finding the ladybugs that we set free. He has a theory that the pepper plants have smaller spaces between the stems and leaf so they feel more protected there. My teenager asks everyday what he wants me to have him do in the garden. He wants to work and enjoys being outside. They’re listening! They’re doing! This is our first year with the garden at home. We have done a community one the past few years. I’m so happy to have it right here. I didn’t realize how easy and fun it is to just walk outside 🤣

I took this advice to heart today! This morning I pulled up a pumpkin vine that had signs of borers all along the stem. Put in a garbage bag and threw it out. When I went in and told my son, he said he wanted to cut open the vine and find the borers. At first I said, no, gross, it's already in the trash. But then Gardener Scott's voice said, "teach a child about gardening" and so I woke up his sister too (unappreciated) and we got the bag, put all the vines on the floor in the garage, and took exacto knives to them. My son was SO EXCITED when he found a borer! Thanks for the suggestion. It was gross, but really important stuff for all 3 of us to learn.

Hello Gardener Scott! I retired two years ago. I worked in the health industry and I managed a small staff in an optometry office. In that position I had to learn about new equipment or software so that I could teach them how to do a particular thing or run a specific piece of software. I could relate with you on that point. And they in turn taught me new tricks of the trade. I am looking forward to teaching my grandchildren to garden.

I had so many failures, i am actually new at this, my daughter is 17 and thinks that she knows it all. I planted broccoli from seed and told me that it wouldn't work, actually it is doing very well, lol I think the broccoli is laughing at her. My nieces came not to long ago and had so much fun feeding my plants and seing them grow. I honestly feel like a child, my veggies grow beautifully and then they get eaten by bugs or they die from too much rain (i think! Its the pattern). So live, learn and enjoy. I'm definitely not a master gardener. My mother gardened with me a lot as a child and worked in a nursery for a while. My grandmother also lovingly took care of roses and hydrangeas and camellias. So I have very positive associations with gardening. I've been growing roses for about 10 years here in SoCal but haven't really done much with other plants. This year with Covid we have been home so I had more time to garden. I have 8 year old twins and it was the best fun to work with them with a vegetable garden this year. The pumpkins were the most fun.

Great video, AS ALWAYS. And SO TRUE! 👍 You explained it so well. Such a good teacher! We love Gardner Scott!! ❤️. And yes, I have taught alot of people one on one about gardening. My hubs friend had a gorgeous big blank yard. He loved my gardens. And he asked me to come to his yard and give him advice. 🤣 of couse it all starts with THE DIRT. And his yard being quite big. I explained how to do it all, in steps. Year by year-as your garden grows. Explaining. Buying plants and planting is easy. But the prep of your garden, where the real work is involved. THAT’s the secret. So do it right. He understood and followed the instruction. And now! Wow his yard is a show piece! Could be in a magazine. And as gardeners generally do. Expanded to birds, birdhouses and everything else that goes with it. He plants all his stuff from seed that he grows annually too. I’m so proud of him. (Thats one story). But ...you are right . If it’s “in your blood”, you’ll catch on. And maybe be obcessed with it like I am too. 🤣

Omg, you touched a nerve about the importance of teaching children. My passion for gardening, livestock, poultry, etc., is from my exposure to my grandparents farm. This is the second reason I joined our Master Gardener program here in Fairfax, VA, since there is a program to work with 4th graders. The first reason is to learn about our native plants, and pest, etc., problems in our area. And, by being certified, I hope that will give provide me with the "credentials" to help others.

I love this video and love your heart. I'm starting a children's home for children who have been through trauma, and I'm planning to teach gardening and cooking as life skills and something to occupy their free time. Gardening is not only a life skill, it's also therapeutic. And I also think about how many of Jesus' parables related to gardening, and we can apply principles we learn in gardening to other areas of life. Patience, for example, is a principle we can apply to many other areas of life. And relationships are kind of like plants, fragile and needing to be tended. Thank you for the video... I'm inspired!

I have been 'gardening' for over 40 years...just in my various backyards as I have moved around with the military. My son, now 44, ran inside to his mother when he was about 4, and said "Daddy's are this big, but mine are THIS big" (bigger than mine). Now he lives interstate and still loves his garden. Recently, my 5yo grandson who has a bed in my veg garden " Grandpa, I am the best gardener in the world, even better than you Grandpa". My response? "I hope so Matthew". One of my motivations for growing vegetables these days is to reinforce in my grandchildrens' minds that fruit and veg do not necessarily come from a shelf in the supermarket. Thanks for this video, I reckon it is great stuff with a very good "moral of the story"! Let's teach the next generations that they CAN produce their own food.or at least some of it!

I’ve done gardening all my life, my children often helped, I didn’t realise I was teaching them, until just the other day when my 24 year old daughter called to ask me advice about her garden. Thinking about it all my grown children have and like gardening. I look forward to being able instilling that joy in my grandchildren 💚🌿🌼🌻

I remember picking peas in my grandparents garden when I was no older than 4. Family was sneaky. A 4-year-old was the perfect height. I was shown what to look for and what to pick. By age 5 my parents would send me out after dinner to break up clumps of dirt and water the tomato and pepper plants. I remember watching mama dry seeds to plant the next year. Kids hang onto a lot of information at a young age.

Thanks to you, I learned how to grow garlic and harvest coriander seeds. I shall spend some time contemplating if this is the best how to advise I have encountered in my 4 years of effort to learn enough to dump the word novice as the adjective that describes me as a gardener. You must understand, I am one smart individual and I came ready to move into the advanced gardening techniques. I immediately wanted to have the most beautiful and productive garden, just like I remembered my grandmother's garden when I was a young boy. I committed every mistake you addressed in your 10 most common mistakes new gardeners make video. So year 3 I started over and began learning the fundamentals yet I continue to make many of the same dunderhead mistakes I made the first 2 years. If only grandma had taught me the basics when I was a small tyke, I probably could have bypassed the mistakes I make due to my arrogance I learned from successes in my adolescents and young and mid adulthood. I became used to praise from my patients and colleagues until I finally grew up in my 40s and realized the more I learned the less confident I became that I was bullet proof. My ignorance became evident to me. Back to the now. When I read the title to this video my thought was "I bet he is going to get it wrong." Because I had found the best way to learn something is to teach it. When teach it was your #2 best way I self talked, "I knew he wouldn't list the best way to learn something is to teach it, as #1." But holy cow poop Batman, I was wrong again. So I once again I find that even in my 7th decade of life, I still have a lot to learn and my contemplation is over. Your's is the best how to learn gardening video (and life lesson) that this 'maybe one day' has seen.
