I can confirm that an old fashioned made with Rittenhouse Rye is fantastic. I definitely recommend it.
@jc50669 ай бұрын
I've had both. They are both very similar yet different. Like you mentioned the bourbon is sweeter at the beginning, while the rye will be a bit more spicy. Like you also mentioned after a few minutes everything changes as it gets watered down. At that point I don't really taste much difference between the two. I too am not a big sweets person; I tend to drink my whiskey neat. Once in a while you need to change things up, nothing beats an old fashioned for just that.

I have had the pleasure of doing the exact same tasting except orange bitters for both rather than a orange peel.

On board with this - I prefer lower (just legal) Ryes for mixing - including manhattan. For me that's Old Forester 100 Rye or Wild Turkey 101 Rye. Now, if I'm drinking Rye neat then I want a high Rye and more recently a high Rye that has been finished i.e., double-oaked/toasted.

I do really enjoy Bullet rye or other very high rye whiskey for an old fashioned but you are definitely on to something with the barely legal ryes. My current favorite is either Knob Creek or Wild Turkey rye, both rumored to have a 51% rye mashbill.

Got heavy into old fashioned's at the beginning of Covid. My absolute favorite old fashioned to date is simple syrup, angostura, orange peel, a little water, my special homemade Kusko ice and some Rare Breed 😎 Good times, great oldies

I lean to bourbon in my old fashioneds. And while I don't order them all the time they are my bellwether drink for a new bar; if they can get that right I can expand. I lean towards keeping my rye for mahattens, sazeracs, vieux carre's etc. Also, not a huge fan of Bulleitt. Don't get me wrong, it's ok and I certainly wouldn't turn it away; but it's kind of middle of the road. I feel like there's much better stuff out there. For rye at the moment I'm using Old Forester. It's a little higher proof and brings more the glass IMO.

That was a fun video. My go to for Old Fashioned's is Four Roses Single Barrel. It has just enough rye to balance the cocktail. A close second is Old Forester Rye (great bang for your buck). Cheers!!

Love both of those recommendations, Rick! A great happy medium for all involved is definitely a high rye bourbon or a low rye rye. Cheers!

WHISKEY CHEERS. Have you tried It's Bourbon Night's Southern Old Fashioned. The only thing I do different (besides Whiskeys I might use depending on what I have available) is add a splash of Soda water and orange peel. This southern old fashioned is a big hit here with Friends and Family.

We haven't but we'll look it up! We really ought to try the soda water addition as well. It's a thing people do but for whatever reason we've always skipped it over. Will rectify and report. Cheers Jay G!

I just literally spend 5 minutes at Save Mart staring at both of these bottles trying to decide which one to get for my old-fashion. For $20 I should have just gotten both bottles but I went with the Bourbon in the end as it's the essential traditional one used for an old-fashioned but in the future I'll have to get a Rye bottle of Bulleit as well. Then again who knows, I still want to eventually get a bottle of Old Grand Dad 114 and their Bottled and Bonded as well as a good Knob Creek 9 or 12 as the 9 tastes exceptionally well with the old-fashioned and it's not overly sweet like you might get with Bulleit or Woodford Reserve Double Oak. Thank you so much for sharing because this just proves that everyone is definitely different in their preference of alcohol for their mixed drink and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that so enjoy.

Well said, and we couldn't agree more about Knob Creek as well--it was an often requested bourbon to use for Old Fashioned for us for a period of time as well. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I went through a similar whiskey growth process, but I still love a good old fashioned. And good just means do they use big block ice and don’t do anything crazy to it like kidding oranges and cherries in it or something. If they do any of those two things I’m out.

J/E...I recently made an Old Fashioned w/ rye and lemon peel instead of orange peel, along with demerara simple syrup, Angostura bitters and woodland bitters from the Portland Bitters Project. I highly recommend it. Adding two kinds of bitters to an Old Fashioned (or any standard cocktail, for that matter) is my favorite way to make it more interesting. (It also prevents an Old Fashioned from turning into "sugar water" as you two described it, if you're more accustomed to neat pours.) The lemon peel idea came from an episode on Cara Devine's Behind the Bar KZbin channel. She's well worth checking out if you haven't already.
