As far as brands go, If you are wanting something less expensive but still really good. Cateye is a solid brand, been running an AMPP800 for years now on my bike without issues. ~$60 for 800 lumens. They also have a bundle with an AMPP800 with a helmet mount and an AMPP1100 with handlebar mount for $149, if you want/need multiple lights.

There's more to lights than just Lumens. I'd be interested in how long they run on full charge, or brightness modes, like flashing (for city traffic where I just want to be seen, rather than seeing the road). Also too bright messes up our eyes night vision capability, so looking at something in the distance and dark is less easy when it takes time for our pupils to adjust from a bright source right in front, to something else that's not lit. And also blinding on-coming traffic as some have mentioned.

Whats the brightest and longest lasting?
@BH4x0r Жыл бұрын
that is why i prefer proper low beam style lights only, the beam is usually pretty well optimised so when shining on the wall near the top (before the cutoff) it is the brightest, so you can aim it far down the road and it is seemingly as bright as up close, and is aimable under the eyes of drivers or people in general i don't get why people are still messing about with the standard flashlight beam style lights another disappointing thing of most bike lights is that they're often more expensive cause it's a "niche" product other than that i would recommend an *ebike* light any day that way it is less prone to being stolen and doesn't have a separate battery that needs to stay topped up, using the scooters' battery just makes a whole lot more sense an average 20W light will run more than 100 HOURS on a 60V 38Ah pack heck even on a 48V 20Ah pack it would take 50 hours to completely drain

I totally agree with you get what you pay for. I initially gotten my lights from local sporting goods, thinking they were legit if store bought. Sadly disappointed. Now i use my Nitecore P12, a handheld flash light -its very bright, beam quality and build are excellent. I mount it with a bike tube clamp to whatever im riding.
@RCDevotee2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jimmy and Andrew! I hope you are all healed up Andrew from the Master fall. PEVs got me looking into lights over the past few years. I generally think you get what you pay for with lights. I started off with the cheaper ones with inflated specs. One thing I think EUC riders should really consider is carrying a very nice flashlight. In general you can find great flashlights out there that easily put out 5000+ lumens that have replaceable 18650, 21700 or 26650 cells. If needed you can carry a few spare batteries in case you have very long rides. With a great flashlight in your hand you can direct light in real-time where you need it most. The higher end flashlights have better flood and spot capabilities which really allow you to see the imperfections in the road and see things far ahead. A hard mounted light can never achieve that. I know many MTB riders have a hard mounted light on the bike along with a helmet light to allow them maximum light coverage in ever-changing terrain. I would even consider a great flashlight mounted on other PEVs. There are plenty of mounting options out there that can mount a flashlight to a bike or scooter easily. In general you can get a much better light as a flashlight versus ones made exclusively for bicycles.

Scooter riders in the Philippines are fond of using 3000-5000 lumen motorcycle auxiliary lights powered by 12or16V battery packs, some of which they also use to power really loud horns for safety. These lights have nice wide white or yellow beams with cutoffs to not blind incoming traffic.

Light pollution is immense these days. I am routinely being blinded by morons running super bright lights on roadways that are already lit with perfectly good street lamps. The vast majority of people these days are literally too stupid to understand the obvious fact that if you are blinding people, you are creating dangerous situations. You do not need stadium lights to see where you are going. Lights are to provide SOME illumination of the road way but their main function in already lit environments is to serve as marker lights. Marker lights allow others to see you and judge your speed and distance. When you blind people you prevent that from happening. While driving motor vehicles I have literally almost run over people in the middle of the street because of being blinded by lights that are too bright and pointing up. As a PEV rider I now have to contend with thoughtless morons who are running multiple LED headlamps on scooters that are pointing not at the ground but up into my eyes, blinding me so badly that I have to raise a hand to block the light from blinding me. Point the lights down, idiots.

I had lights similar to this and yes they illuminate the road but it is a very white light that is shattered, ideally you want to use an e-bike light that is STZVO or E-Mark, this gives you a clear crystal type of light that has a beam cut off, these lights are typically expensive especially if you want a battery modular solution such as Lupine or Supernova which you adapt for use as a helmet light, how if you are fitting to the on the vehicle you can find wired solution on aliexpress for under $30. What you don't see it what may cause an accident.

Unless where you travel legitimately requires high capacity lights than the 3000lm, or Mountaineer one which is the coolest looking one too *Then most of the others you showed were sufficient. The one thing I disliked about the Mountaineer one is the separate battery pack/installation. The less space it takes out of all the lights it triples it with the additional real estate as well as a wire that needs to be taped down making everything less clean. Additionally you’ll have to worry about damaging another part of the light. Cool looking with very good lumens, but a bit of a *hassle* that may put some off *understandably.*
