Martre Coles was a talented young artist living just outside Richmond, VA. He was looking for an escape, and he got one when he received an email from a university asking him to come down. He was never heard from again, and that email was determined to be fake.

I heard on other channels that E from the age of 9 spent a lot of time physically attacking M. I wonder now after Mike's version if she wasn't acting out her mother's hatred for him? Mom may have put on a friendly face to M, but expressed her anger and hatred for him to E. I admire E's courage coming forward. Her statement and the way she called the police were ingenious. I had that very thought, too! Since it didn't take long for him to get over his wife (whom he loved) getting over his son's death (whom he didn't like) would have been even quicker recovery. What would she have done then?? Start killing his friends? Burn down his house? And what if their "keeping him in a vulnerable state" lasted for years!! Everyone take a minute, out of respect for Martre Cole, and see if the problems in your life COULD BE due to a horrible person in your life causing you harm. If so DO SOMETHING so they don't harm you further or those you love.

I thought that too! I would expect it more if the mom was still alive and she thought they might get back together so killing Martre would help bring those chances down. But nope! No matter how much I think about it, I still don’t understand her motive or reasoning for wanting him dead. Maybe she felt the dad was favoring his son over her daughters and she wanted her and her daughters to be in the #1 spot. Idk, she’s obv an evil nutcase regardless and had no reason other than pure selfishness

I have experienced this kind of hatred. Shortly after my father married his second wife, he got full custody of my brother and I from our mother. The minute we entered "her" house, she wanted us gone. She wanted a life with only my father and her two children. We were cut out of family photos. She tortured us on a daily basis. When our dad found out about some of what she was doing to us and him, he kicked her and her children out of HIS house. So, I feel like I got lucky because her daughter was several years younger than me and I had my older brother with me. She had come really close to killing us several times and I couldn't imagine having her and someone else in the house at the same time. That poor boy didn't have a chance.

It should have been followed up regardless, especially when at that point he had been reported missing for 2 weeks. Such a smart girl and brave girl to plan that false alarm to help get her stepbrother’s cruel killers behind bars. Poor Martre. As if losing his mum wasn’t bad enough, he got left with a dad who didn’t care and a stepmother and stepsister prepared to not only lie to him about something he so wanted but then to murder him. He looked like such a sweet boy with so much to offer the world. @@turtleislandlac1490 to be fair I never claimed she was, however we don’t know the full circumstances around that. Not saying in any way is it excusable or okay but she was also a 9 year old child having to learn to live with a new dad and brother. I mean we only have to look at her mother to think possibly she didn’t have the best upbringing and acted out as a result. However she absolutely did the right thing in the end, when she was a little older. She could just have easily pretended she didn’t see it, or not even cared, but clearly she felt enough empathy to set up a false burglary to entice the police to the house so she could tell them. Again, not saying what she tried to do to her stepbrother was okay, but we don’t know the full story or how she felt about it years later. Well of course the police want to make sure she is telling the truth, she wasn't particularly a child who was known for telling the truth, had some major violent tendencies and was mad at her parents, anyone with half a brain cell would challenge her on her assertions, to not do so would have been irresponsible. @@turtleislandlac1490 yes that’s the podcast I first heard this story which is why I knew that the cops didn’t take Elena seriously when she told them. The breaking stuff - she’s a 9 year old kid, so whatever on that one. Again, obviously what she did in regards to Martre was awful, but does that take away from her doing the right thing in the end? Would you prefer she didn’t say anything? Obviously it was messed up, but so was her mother. But we still don’t know if she ever apologised, ever felt bad for what she did, if she was really aware of the finality of her actions in that moment, if she was being parented well enough to understand how wrong that was, etc. One thing doesn’t negate the other - what she did was bad, regardless of circumstances. But she did do the right thing in the end. And honestly my original comment was more in disgust of the cops for not believing her.

As someone who's dad sacrificed so much to help provide for us and cared with every fibre of his being to then be taken from us early, hearing this story of a so-called parent murdering a child out of jealousy is just... devastating. Why do these people get to live and the good ones have to leave us.... RIP Martre you poor soul and God bless that little sister, she is a true hero.

I’m a Highland Spring Alumni, but haven’t lived there or been back home in many years. This story breaks my heart for both Martre & Dennise’s youngest child (?). I can’t believe that LE left that 12yo child in the hands of what she accused as murderers! They should have immediately removed her from that woman & sister’s custody for her own safety. It chills my blood to think what they may have done to her had they found out that girl spoke to LE. *shakes head* Sadly, shady and sus snit can happen when You are a child with no one there to advocate for you or consider your safety. Can You imagine what that girl had to mentally & emotionally live with for those weeks? Alone with what she knew were Murders! How much fear and anxiety and who knows what else rolling through her Head & heart? LE Officers she spoke to I’m Looking at YOU! I truly hope that she is now in a safe and loving environment! And that there is a court order in place that will shield her from either her mother or sister contacting her in the future. A future that I hope is now much brighter and more positive that she is away from both killers. As far as Martre, my dude, my heart goes out to You, my Fellow Springer! I wish You had the chance to chase and fulfill Your dreams! May You Rest In Peace, with Our other Passed Alumni who unfortunately met untimely ends…Tonia, Scott, and now Martre, You each will always be in my Heart, Memories, and Prayers…See You each again and/or meet You someday in the future…

Truly a sad story here. So many things to feel bad about for Martre, especially since all he wanted was to begin a life for himself and move on from the sadness and upheaval of his home life. When will single parents realize that their kids should be their first priority when circumstances suddenly leave them with one less parent in the home (whether through death or divorce or whatever). Your responsibility lies with your children... not your social life, not companionship for yourself, and surely not finding yourself a new spouse to move into your home to take up the slack of the previous parent. Life is not about "you" when your children are looking to you to hit the re-set button and put their lives back on track. You can get back to your own social life after you've made sure that the dust has settled and everyone in the family has healed and is ready to move on. Such an unnecessarily tragic story. I hope the father spends the rest of his life miserable, wishing he had loved, appreciated, and looked after his son better. What a loser for not just accepting his son for the sweet, sensitive, creative person he was and allowing such a terrible fate to befall him.

For sure, it’s one thing to miss your wife. It’s another thing to neglect your son. This definitely hits home, I would’ve loved being friends with him for sure as artist buddies. I feel so sorry for his girlfriend, it seems like she was the only person who actually cared about him, as well as his little step sister

Probably the mom was a pos as well and distanced herself and her son from the man, being antagonistic to him. Do you wonder why no step dad ?

If he has anything resembling a heart and a conscience. It will bother him. If not, he's dead on the inside and headed for painful lonely existence where no one will mourn him when he dies.

Agreed a total loser of a father. He might as well go to jail for child abuse.

This is one of the most upsetting cases you've covered - Martre seemed like such a sweet guy - and the fact there was no practical reason or even a greed for some benefit at his death - just pure hatred from those malicious butt-ugly waste of space women - pure living-breathing evil & that is the really chilling element.

My eldest son is the has just gone 18. When I see Matre, I see him. This is one of the most cruelly, sadistic and evil cases I’ve heard. The way they took his dreams and used them to harm him. Oh it makes me so flipping mad!!!! The thought of Matre being so excited , that’s pure evil I just can’t put into words I hope they both rot.

I’ve known about this case for a while. My mom still lives in Richmond. It’s the strangest and kind of dumbest murder plot I’ve ever heard. To me, it just sounded like it was thought up by someone who thinks they’re smart, but they’re really just a whole moron.

The other really sad thing is that if those pictures that flashed up while talking about his art are by him (seems likely given the context), he had actual talent. Those are unusually good by the standards of a young artist before their university training. He probably really could have gone to art school and worked in video game illustration, animation, or graphics design.

This is one of the most heartbreaking cases that I have heard so far. This completely innocent, sweet guy was murdered by a person he trusted, because she was jealous - of what? Him being his mother's son? His father, whose affection Denise craved, didn't even care for him! That's just... Rest in peace, Martre, you deserved better.

Quick note; Matre was known for his masks. They were one of the main components of his art portfolio.

@@FoxyCAMTV Face coverings like you'd see in theatre, most likely. Artsy animal-esque masks, maybe. Mike said paper mache; a google search of 'paper mache masks' will give you a better idea than words can convey here.
