Granny prepares her annual batch of spring tonic, but the family is reluctant to try it. Despite their hesitation, Granny manages to slip Jed a double dose. Meanwhile, Miss Jane introduces Mr. Drysdale to her promising yet unassuming bank protégé, Gloria Buckles (Lola Albright). Gloria volunteers to deliver some important papers to Jed for signing, but Miss Jane is unaware of Gloria’s true nature-she’s a cunning gold-digger with her sights set on Jed’s $34 million fortune. When Pearl and Granny meet the glamorous Gloria, their suspicions are piqued. To deter her, they subtly emphasize how old Jed is, hoping to make him seem less appealing.
Gloria takes Jed for a drive and claims she’s destined to marry a mountain man, hinting at her interest in him. Jed, ever polite, says he’ll think about it as he doesn’t want her to be alone. Back at the mansion, Pearl tries to convince Gloria that Jed doesn’t have any money, but Gloria remains undeterred. Jed gathers the family, saying he has an announcement to make, prompting Pearl to call Drysdale, who rushes over with Miss Jane in tow. When Jed declares that marriage is a good idea, it seems Gloria’s plan has succeeded. However, Jed quickly reveals he’s seen through her scheme, adding that she’ll have to wait three or four years-until Jethro is old enough to marry her instead.
