The Big F-Zero 99 Video

The word "addicting" gets used a lot when talking about games (I use it all the time too) but man this game is legitimately addicting lol. This is the only game this year where I went to bed, couldn't stop thinking about it, and then got back up and played long into the night. So glad this game was made as it turned me into a big F-Zero fan and made me play the masterpiece that is GX. Great review!

But seriously, as someone who has an extremely extensive history with F-Zero (and had a KZbin Channel devoted to it), I'm just glad to no longer hear those lame "F-Zero ded" jokes again and again. People have been taking part in art challenges, making more F-Zero fan art, remixes, talking about it, realizing that Captain Falcon ISN'T all there is to F-Zero, and above all, Nintendo finally became interesting again rather than cater exclusively to just one type of audience. Granted, Nintendo does have more opportunities than ever before (with movies and such), but in F-Zero's case, things actually look more hopeful. And this is without bringing up how its (frankly disappointing) absence caused games like Aero GPX, XF Extreme Formula, Redout II, G-Minus, Formula MAX, and Super Pilot came for those already downtrodden F-Zero fans. Now, F-Zero fans can have hope and dream to their hearts content without anyone beating them down with the once tired talking points. That said, it can't just END at F-Zero 99. There's no way it would. F-Zero 99 coming here and already painting a positive picture for most F-Zero fans (even though many would have strongly preferred something more alongside it rather than 99 by itself) does mean that it is more than fair to expect Nintendo to come with a meatier F-Zero installment within 4-5 years (No more than that because something like F-Zero really should not go that long without a new title). Just had to get this all out there thanks to this video.

That angles bit was pretty obtuse ngl. This was a great video! I’ve never been an F-ZERO guy. I even played GX for a bit a few months ago and it just didn’t really click for some reason. BUT, but but but, it makes me extremely happy to see a long-neglected Nintendo series come back in any way at all, and I’m happy to see that despite first impressions, it’s kinda become a huge beacon of hope for the fans. I may not be a fan (yet??? who knows) but I’m absolutely rooting for this series to make a return. Nobody deserves to have their favorite series dead and buried. I had my “glorious return” moment with Metroid Dread, the Pikmin fans got theirs with 4, I’m extremely excited to see what series will make a big return next! F-ZERO is most likely a contender!

Surprising that out of all my expectations for when F-Zero 99 was revealed, it was shock. It wasn’t even the game I wanted. But I was just so confused that this supposed “rumored” F-Zero 99 game was actually real. For once, a game came out. No crossover element, no DLC, just PURE F-Zero. That’s how low my expectations for F-Zero were at that point. The mere idea of this game existing was mythical to my brain. On top of that, having just played F-Zero SNES just a month ago, this game is just an infinitely better version of SNES. But with more attack options and boosting akin to X. But one amazing thing it does that is different than ANY other F-Zero game is tackle a series-wide flaw; Multiplayer. Think about it, X might’ve introduced multiplayer. But it was also 4-player. On tracks made for 40 machines. You can tell multiplayer seemed to be an afterthought, with the exception of Vs. Slot. Even GX made it worse by removing Vs. Slot and lowered the framerate with 4 players. 99 tackles and improves on the concept of F-Zero multiplayer that’s been an issue for the entire series, but also improves on online multiplayer Nintendo tried with F-Zero X NSO. And I’ve seen KZbinrs comment on how fun yet unbalanced this game is despite it being chaotic. I feel vindicated for campaigning for better multiplayer after all these years, and feel like Miyamoto was wrong in thinking there was nothing you can do with F-Zero. Because this game kinda proves him wrong. Would I have liked something more akin to Climax? Yeah, but I’ll take what I can get As for the future, I just hope Nintendo realizes that more series need this kind of revitalization. Whether in a port, or just in a quick new game. F-Zero 99 feels like there’s more to come in the future, but it’s too early to say. Right now, I’m kinda happy that F-Zero got put back into the spotlight, and stopped being a joke in the Nintendo community.

Great work Sock! A video worthy of your long awaited return. As to the Donkey Kong rumors, I may not be up to date but I thought the prevailing theory was that a new EPD team would be created as the permanent home for Donkey Kong, instead of EPD 8, but game journalists ran with "Super Mario Oddyssey devs" for clicks, even though "Mario Kart Tour devs" would've been just as accurate.

I've never heard the "new branch of EPD for DK" rumor. Still, I never believed any version of the rumor (and still don't, but do think it's likely DK will be back soon lol) Also, the Mario Kart Tour devs were a combo of EPD9 and EPD11, Odyssey was EPD8 (aka EPD Tokyo) EPD as a whole kinda share people and assets among all the divisions though, so idek whether or not a whole new 12th branch would be necessary (but then again, if they're hiring so many NEW people that they can have another purely development focused branch, I'm all for it!)

You don't have to apologize for your initial reaction man, it was totally understandable. Also for what it's worth, I think F-Zero has one critical element in common with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid: 2D and 3D entries are kind of these similar but separate beasts. 2D F-Zero is different enough from 3D F-Zero that people are bound to have a preference, and again there's no shame in your initial desire for the franchise's grand return to be a Breath of the Wild and not a Link's Awakening Switch edition. That said, I'm glad you've come around on 99 and are enjoying it, both on its own terms and as an honest to goodness F-Zero title. Here's hoping there's more to come. ...Even just an HD port of GX, c'mon Nintendo!!

I think one important take away from all this is that this game got people who never showed interest in F-Zero to try it and talk about it. That's a big win in my book.

I love F-Zero 99 and I really hope it gets at least a few more updates to keep interest from falling too much! Hopefully the next entry in the franchise is coming soon, and I’m excited to give it a try! Great stuff as always! Also slightly early congrats on 10K!

I'm certain we're getting maximum velocity this year as it was revealed with gba nso, next year though, it could be climax in full english.

This was a fantastic video. Glad you reviewed it based on what it was and not what it wasnt. My gut feeling is that this is an advertisement for GX Remastered. Still euphoric to think that F-Zero is relevant again considering YT didnt exist before 99.
