Maude speaks in the Mid-Atlantic accent. It's an accent that didn't evolve naturally like other accents but was consciously constructed. It was invented by finishing schools for girls in the Northeastern US to make their students sound aristocratic and "cultured". The idea was to take the "best" parts of the aristocratic American accent and the aristocratic British accents and make them into one cultured accent to be taught to students from any country to make a sort of elite. Hollywood adopted it early on and insisted it be used by starlets like Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. Over the years it's become a bit of a joke. When someone wants to do an impression of pompous rich people they use the Mid-Atlantic accent.

I love every Coen Brother movie. The little inside jokes. The heavy set detective in the VW like the one from Blood Simple and In this movie Donny, Steve Buscemi, is always being told to shut up but in Fargo he never stops talking.

I watched this in theaters with some buddies. Of course, we had to stop at Ralph's ( still existed in San Diego at the time), and get some milk, vodka, and kahlua for our White Russian fix! Bitter sweet for me, as the release of the movie was in 1998, the same year I lost my mom. I took her to see the movie the next day, and she loved it! Now, I make sure to watch this every year for my mom's birthday.

Love everything about it, the postdated 69 cent check, Hoffman's body language, Walter's Nam bravado, the dialogue, you're being very undude, Jesus, licking the ball, all of it, soup to nuts. It's the best Coen flick which is saying something. They made a dozen sensational flicks. Really a shame they hung it up as a duo.

I quote this movie without even realizing I'm doing it. For example, if I see any social media post showing a strange animal, I immediately think, "It's a fucking show dog with fucking papers..." Or if anyone says anything declaratively, very sure of themselves, I'll think, "You know....well that's just like... your opinion, man...." The only other movie I think comes close to having that quality is Oh Brother, Where Art Thou

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man." Fun Fact: With the exception of The Dude (Jeff Bridges) helping Maude (Julianne Moore) bowl in a fantasy, The Dude is never actually seen bowling once. The Real Dude Fact: A lot of the Dude's clothes in the movie were Jeff Bridges's own clothes, including his Jellies sandals, which he reportedly still owns and uses to this very day. Big Paraquat Fact: In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, John Goodman stated that The Dude (Jeff Bridges) referring to The Big Lebowski (David Hiddleston) as a "human paraquat" was one of the only improvised lines to make it into the final film. Virtually every other line was scripted.

My favorite movie. The reason why Donnie was told shut the buck up was because in the Coens previous movie, Fargo, Steve Buscemis character talks incessantly. I lived in Louisville, Ky for 10 years. It is the home of the first Lebowski festival. Very fun.

white russian is alcoholic coffee. shot of vodka, shot of kaluha (i don't like it, too expensive), dilute with milk or half-n-half. since grocery stores now carry iced coffee on the shelf, i don't bother with kahlua. 3/5th glass vodka, 2/5th vanilla iced coffee, all poured over ice and mixed well. It barely has a taste at the start, and as the ice starts melting it dilutes and makes it drink even easier.

The Coen bros do great subversive comedy. TBL is hilarity in mundanery. The Dude is just a simple man making his way through the world and we get to see a weird thing that happened to him that one time. Fargo is another of their subversive comedies, along with Burn After Reading and Hudsucker Proxy. Raising Arizona veers more absurd, as do Oh Brother Where Art Thou, The Ladykillers remake, and Hail Ceasar (my fave). All are worth a watch.

I think you're the first person I've seen pick up on all the call backs in the script on their first viewing. I think my favorite call back is the second time he goes to see Maude and she calls the porno a beaver picture, and The Dude responds "you mean vagina?", referencing Maude's initial rant about how men are always referring to their genitals with some kind of euphemism. This is definitely a movie that gets funnier each time you watch it. Nice editing for the trimmed down version, btw.

My favorite is "this aggression will not stand", echoing President Bush from an earlier TV news clip. Bush was referring to Saddam Hussein, first mentioned by the narrator in the intro, and then makes an appearance in the musical/dream sequence.

One that I've never seen people pick up on (and that I actually didn't notice until recently) is in the beginning when Dude is at the grocery store and he turns to look at the TV at the checkout. On the TV, George H.W. Bush says, "This will not stand. This aggression against Kuwait will not stand".

Apart from just being hysterical from beginning to end, Lebowski is a movie you can keep getting things out of every time you watch it, whether that's a little extra insight into the labyrinthine plot, or something deeper and more philosophical. Especially as a man, this movie has tons to say about manhood and masculinity.

One of the funniest things to think about, especially on a second viewing, is the scene with Larry from his perspective, given what we now know. Two strange men come into your house, wave your homework in your face, demand the money, say you're going to get your Johnson cut off and that you're killing your father. One of them then proceeds to go outside and completely dismantle your neighbor's car while screaming over and over again that you f'ed someone in the ass.
