*126. Drinking Water: Quality & Challenges:* • Metro cities of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai failed in almost 10 out of 11 quality parameters tested by the Bureau of Indian Standards. • Composite water Management Index: India ranks 120/122 countries. Cause of poor water quality: • Mixing of surface water & ground water (Arsenic, fluoride contamination) • Pipeline not maintained - contamination. • Water supply line & sewerage line running side by side. • Digging in cities & no hygiene - liberal source of pollution Impact: • Harmful health impacts: water borne diseases ~ 70% • Tourist inflow will decrease - water, air quality low. • Plastic pollution: bottled water gives rise to plastic pollution • Wasting resources: for 1 liter of RO or bottled water, many liters of water used. • RO is expensive & deprived of nutrients. Challenges: • Bacteria & solid wastes including chemicals hence need treatment - only chlorination not enough. • Distribution & supply side quality different - need to pinpoint the issue. • Boiling of water may not be enough anymore: consumer cannot do much. • Water is a state subject: Federal structure. Way Forward: • Data based support system - water quality should be tested frequently. • Involvement of all citizens - sensitization & awareness. • BSI standard should be mandatory. • Accountability needs to be fixed. • Long distance travel & treatment should be localized. • Proper maintenance - pricing should be recovered. • Upgrade treatment plant - killing bacterial waste primary concern: now dissolved solids content increased. • New technology (ion exchange) & efficient water refining systems.

1. This is the first instance when, potable water has been tested from consumer side, earlier it had been done from supply or distribution side. 2.reason for potable water contamination-- a. Lack of interest in water supply infrastructure maintenance. B. Polluted effluents from industries, contaminated solid dumping which is the key reason for ground water pollution. C. Lack of proper purifying strategy, mere chlorination does not remove solid waste.d. mixing of ground water with that of surface. E. Lack of public awareness. Way forward- a. Make every information public to sensitize public.b. more focus on maintenance than installation.c. better purifying strategy, d. Strict penalty has be imposed on industries for effluent.

Prof. C.K. gave very nice suggestions but may be due to mistake he said BSI rather than BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).

Prof is the best. Why were these rankings not done earlier and issue highlighted at bigger scale. This kind of negligence on compliance occurs only in 3rd world country like ours. However it seems we are moving ahead somewhere!!!

First time such test are in public domain , sample has been done at consumer level, supply pipes in bad conditions. Only chlorinating water is not enough , can't help with dissolved solids and toxins Primary efforts was to make water available, now it's time to move further No binding commitment to BSI standards , it should be made mandatory in all municipality One of SDG goals , achievable by 2030 Problem is multiplying as dependable water bottle causes plastic problem Mumbai has rainfall as imp source of water Industrial wastage, discharge ect in Delhi run side by side to water pipelines. Water is a state subject Localized water treatment and supply. With proper pricing and maintenance , long distance water transport should be avoided No blame game we should take responsibility, sensitivity should be on all corners. Samples should also come from rural areas as well. More frequent data release Upgrade treatment plants . Water should be treated with hygiene. Databasesd support system .

Paswan collected only few samples all country is facing bad quality water and paswan only targeting Delhi modi media will also biased. So people from there respective areas collect videos of there water quality and put in KZbin so that everyone will come to know the quality of water in country. Mumbai using aqwa guard to drink water and paswan ranking first. I think paswan need to send to school again.

No worries! We are highly immunized Civilians. Our Bodies can tolerate such Water-Borne and Air-Borne diseases effects. People need to coordinate and worry about this issue. Country's Natural Asset is in the hands of people if they wish they can mould it the way they want. Pollution Data is rising on all International and National Indices referring a significant Threat to People's Lives.

Points to be made Diisolved solids can't be removed by chlorination Water quality is questionable How samples were collected and tested At the consumer level, tests were carried out. Pipes are leaking old expensive thus non replaceable People in delhi have to pump water..... After 2 years one needs to clean those tanks Consumer end water supply must be tested and considered. Bore water quality is still very doubtful Data based system must be there. Quality of drinking water is not upto the mark. People mix ground water and surface water making it unclean. 70% of water in the country is polluted. Even for igners are conflicting with these parameters. Mumbai has passed all 11 parameters of BSI

Why you will not maintain the water supply when u r supplying free water.. what nonsense.. poor people at the receiving end..who spends major portion of their earning in treatments of water Borne disease.. & then u wonder how to take people out of poverty.. u can never do it w/o providing basic amenities like water, road, electricity, education & health care coverage..

The only knowledgeable person on the panel appeared to be the Professor, even though I would want to think otherwise. He perhaps was the only one who spoke about the problems as well as their solutions in a pragmatic manner. But, overall a decent discussion none the less.
