I’ve been in or around politics for over a half-century now. I’ve watched as corporations ransacked our system. In 1952, the corporate share of federal tax revenue was 32%. In 2020, it was down to 7%.
Here’s how we break the corporate oligarchy and return power to the people.

@@Stonecoldfrank Chipping in, in America, government ought/should be large enough to and commensurate to the population and to meet its needs in a democratic society which is currently over 340 million people. I hold for democratic socialism which is the government mostly benefiting the citizens. Most major industries are privately owned (capitalism), but they have to stand on their own without handouts from the government. The tax burden previously funneled to the wealthy corporations is used to improve the lives of the citizens instead. This enables the government to help fund improvements to public services such as: police, fireman, libraries, roads and interstates, education and healthcare. The system is driven by people working together and lifting each other up. In this system the middle class thrives and poverty decreases. This system is more democratic (ruled by the people) than our current system. In conclusion, in our capitalist economic system greed ought and should be replaced by rational self-interest. Like President Biden has stated, everyone will pay his or her fair share of taxes NO MATTER what one's income level is; namely, if one's income is 16K a year OR 175 billion a year. Listening to and following through with the most brilliant, like Robert Reich, can something like a more good and more equitable society and culture come about. PLEASE continue to follow Robert Reich because his brilliance will lead the way.

I agree but you left out the most important reason: The sudden increase of supply of labor and simultaneous decrease in demand for labor. Woman and minorities flooded the labor market. Global population increased. Partially as a response to increasing demands of domestic labor, globalization and automation decreased the need for and the wages of domestic labor. The consequences for American society were horrific and disastrous. AN ANALOGY: Consider a parade. Everyone is initially sitting down resting. A few stand up. They get a better view but then everyone stands up, they all have the SAME view as everyone standing and the SAME view as they had BEFORE anyone stood up! It’s tiring to stand for long periods of time and it undermines people’s health. If you or your partner have to sit back down, you will fall behind. You are WORSE off than before! Someone gets the brilliant idea to climb a tree. They get a better view. Soon everyone is trying to climb. But there are only a few trees left to climb. There are few branches and they are high up. People are grabbing for whatever branch they can get a grip on. When a nearby tree is too difficult to climb, people run far away to distant trees. It’s no better there. Families are now atomized and with no extended family nearby, they have no safety net should misfortune strike. People on the higher branches step on the hands of those trying to climb up. Most lose their grip or their footing or both and fall to ground. Whole branches snap off causing people to plummet to the ground. They impact others on the way down, injuring them and causing them to fall as well. A few attempt to climb back up. Others despair. They are too tired or injured to try any more. Those lying on the ground are trampled, cursed and spit upon. They are called lazy, worthless and worse. Some are so broken that they die from their many injuries, physical and psychological. It is exhausting even for those who are able to stay focused on preserving their grip and their place on the trees. They are so focused on that objective and so fearful of losing their grip and falling that they dare not loosen their grip to extend a hand to help somebody below them in need. The only “winners” are those who own the trees! Solution: Plant MANY more trees. 1) Universities must train and equip people to start and run their own businesses and organizations. If they are training students to work for somebody else, they should be regarded and treated as FAILURES! Also, education for those that can make the grades should be free. The student loan debt for all those who did make the grades should be retroactively cancelled. First rate technical schools should be established to equip workers for blue collar jobs - it is illogical to think that every person in society should be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, computer scientist or astrophysicist. The jobs that are created OUGHT to be those that the local communities need NOT what a big corporation or their close cousin, big government needs. 2) Public and financial policies must make it easier to profitably start and operate a small businesses. The provision of Universal health care is mandatory 3) BUST UP THE TRUSTS! Shatter these big corporations into tiny shards of glass. If you are a CEO and don’t know what is going on in your company, then your company is TOO BIG! 4) Place stiff tariffs on foreign imports to encourage domestic production and employment. Prioritize domestic control of industries that provide critical life support functions to AMERICAN CITIZENS. 5) Require USA citizenship AND residency within the jurisdiction to own land in the USA. No corporate, absentee or foreign ownership of land. These entities can LEASE land from the resident citizens of the jurisdiction. 6) Get the money out of politics. One person, one vote NOT one dollar, one vote. That works for me. Let’s do it!

Why does it take two people to support a family now? Because with more people in the workplace, the value of each worker will go down. Supply and demand. It would also be interesting to note that not all in their respective economic classification, ie the poor or the middle for that matter, at the beginning of this flow chart are the same. Many since the beginning of the timeline have changed classes. DL Hughley has a very poignant and funny episode from his sitcom in which the main character (a new member of the entrepreneurial business class) comes to the surprising self realization that he has become a fiscal conservative at an inflection point in his life of a choosing a local candidate for public office. The punchline having something to do with voting his pocketbook and f-ing his social conscience. In addition Pat Buchanan said like 10+ years ago(maybe even 20) on the McLaughlin Group when the fear of a socialist takeover was in the public discourse and before he was seen as an eccentric if not worse. His comment: "Look folks Socialism is here but it is socialism for the rich(wealthy) not the poor". I don't have solutions but staying socially relevant and current being financially literate can be a buffer from utter ruin, I would imagine. This flow chart may help the next generation but the power brokers probably have something new innovation (or old trick) up their sleeve. Many of the socialist leaning poor of yesteryear are the rich and wealthy today. Financial literacy and understanding social systems worked to their advantage.

Ultimately, Americans have swung too far in the individualism and 'rights' direction and too far away from the build a society together and 'responsibilities' direction. In any functioning society there has to be a balance between your personal freedoms and your responsibilities to society, and no-one seems to be talking about that anymore in America. It is all Me Me Me, and the ultimate examples of Me Me Me, the oligarchs, are coming out on top. It is a cultural thing that is deeper than any individual policy or political party. Americans have lost the sense of themselves as a PEOPLE and are no just a loose collection of disparate individuals.

Any fairness and decent treatment of the majority of Americans, such as Universal Health Care, is automatically labelled "Socialism", and this kneejerk reaction is all the elite need to say to end any deep conversation.

@@Zach-ju5vi Wrong. I would be dead without universal healthcare. Countries that adopt it never go back to private because it's political suicide for a politician to even suggest it. BTW Canada has a lower infant mortality rate and a longer lifespan than the US because of our healthcare system. The only ones who go to the US are the rich who don't want to wait for elective surgery.

@@Zach-ju5vi It probably depends on which country they came from or went to. Sub par treatment, of course, is also doled out to people in the USA who are either not insured or underinsured as millions are. There is no doubt that the well-to-do can get excellent treatment in the USA, but what about the others? And there is always the question of costs, which here in the USA can bankrupt people, something that people for example in the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Austria never have to fear.

I hear a lot of people say, "I'm changing the system from the inside." I used to subscribe to that philosophy. I did so for decades. But what you don't realize - until it's too late - is that when you are inside, everything you do serves the system. Your attempts at resistance to its abuses - mostly futile - give it legitimacy. Your work gives it energy. Its daily work gets done by your hands. In the meantime, you have a mortgage - a car payment - obligations that you can't merely put aside. So you compromise here and there. You remain silent when your conscience tells you that you should speak. You seek the approval of gatekeepers you don't respect. You shave off your square corners to fit into their round holes. In the end, you don't change "the system" from the inside. It changes you.

How many good guys have died and disappeared from politics in the last hundred years? Look what they did to JFK. The whole system needs to be torn out and rebuilt with honest people who actually want the best for the majority of people. It's an almost impossible task. With the changes after 9/11 etc anyone against the people in power will be labeled terrorists and locked up in high security prisons where they can't even communicate with people outside. Or they just end up dead. Just another statistic, part of the thousands killed by the police.

This is an excellent explication of the development of the mess we're in. I have been crying in the wilderness about this since the presidential campaign of 1979! I cried out at every devious development the Rethuglikkkans perpetrated on the American public, but I had no forum until the development of the Web. I was still only one voice with no credentials. You have a much bigger voice than I. Bravo for using it so well and so graphically. 💕

The CDC just said that a 10-day shutdown would tank the US economy, so if we set up a 9-day general strike, we could demand absolutely anything! Also, it was recently pointed out that one type of employee can cost thousands of times as much as any other worker, so to maximize profit, the CEO role needs to be replaced by automation.
