The BIG Problem with Atlus RE-RELEASING Games

This issue could've been easily solved by introducing "version upgrade" - if you own previous/original release you pay ~50% less. This could be tricky to implement since re-releases always come out on perviously unavailable platforms so how do you allow ppl to pay less when they bought original release on other platform ? e.g player buys Metaphor on PC then wants to buy Metaphor "ReImagined" on Switch 2 unless Metaphor "ReImagined" comes out on PC there's no way to implement that without putting up with various console manufacturers

Persona 3 did that back in 2006, if you already had the vanilla version you could just pay for Episode Aigis, and they repeated it with reload.

@@nir4s63 I don't know the exact amount since this update was only in japan so it was in Yen, but it was something around 15-20 dollars (ps2 games where 40 dollars). I bet we'll be able to buy it separately later, it's like a fighting game season pass.

@@nir4s63 You need to have the original P3 game disc to boot Episode Aigis disc. If you are familiar how Final Fantasy 8, 9 and 10 work on PS2, the original P3 was the same as that. That is why they called it as "append disc".

@@nir4s63nah I don’t have a problem with them rereleasing games physically, simply I rather own the answer content in the base game then have to pay for it seperately as dlc. And rereleases are a very good way to preserve a complete physical copy that contains all of the content included that originally was digital. So if it means that the dlc is included on the disc/cartridge then I could careless because I want a complete physical copy with all of the previously digital only dlc content be included on the cartridge/cart. As a game collector I can’t explain how important video game preservation is. Especially for physical media.

@@Jirujan They _literally_ said that it won't be in the game on release, they did not comment about DLC or anything else. And that's the thing. Episode Aigis is a DLC. Not a re-released, expanded version. Because unlike FES, Portable, Golden, Royal and Vengeance, it doesn't change the _whole_ game, it just adds a separate epilogue. So you should have no problem with it. _IF_ Atlus releases Persona 3 Rebirth with FeMC, _then_ you have a right to complain

Can't speak for other folks who were fans of P3FES back in the day, but I think for them (and for me) the issue with Reload's expansion pass is that P3FES was clearly the basis of Reload, despite what they said in interviews. Atlus remade like 75% of a game, charged us full price for it, and are now charging us again for the remainder. Using P5 as an example, if they added the "Royal" stuff to the base P5 2017 game as DLC, that would have been fine since that would be NEW content at that point in time. But in P3R's case, The Answer isn't new content, so it feels scummy on Atlus' part.

All good I'll buy the next version of Metaphor when it comes to the next Nintendo console. On a serious note I bought SMTV back in 2021 and now I have Vengeance as well. I kinda hope that Atlus gets it together and sticks to DLC/expansion passes in the future.

@@Litten-sb7eg P6 will not get rereleased for a lot of years. Main Reason old games get rereleased are probably graphics. Also they will probably instead work on a Persona 4 Remake which I am waiting for, and maybe even 1 or 2 so you can play it without owning a console from 1931.

Atlus has made three strikes in recent history: 1. Rereleasing P5 Royal with no option for DLC upgrade 2. Rereleasing SMT Vengeance with no option for DLC upgrade 3. Remaking a definitive edition of base P3 but not including FES or Portable content, then selling FES content as DLC. They make great games but these scummy company practices eat away at the experience. I'm not going to buy ReFantazio or any of their titles until I'm sure I'm getting the best version.

I dont mind Persona getting spinoffs, i just wished they were less filler and more sequels set after the main game. So i rather have gotten Royal as P5-2 and so on with P3P and P4 Golden etc. im hoping Metaphor and the eventual P6 breaks the trend.

So I don’t have to wait two years to play persona 6 lol I don’t buy any other atlus games other than persona so it doesn’t mean anything to me when they release SMT 6.7 Teraclap or whatever those games are called. SMT is super confusing franchise and everyone who has ever told me about the games has never given me any reason to actually play the games. They are vastly different from persona and it doesn’t sound that fun to me personally. If they come out with a definitive persona 6 later I’ll buy that too. 60-80 bucks 2 years later, sure fine it’s more achievements. Would rather have it just be a DLC but long as it’s not day 1 dlc or ripped from the main game and sold to us I don’t care

I think the persona 3 reload example is pretty disingenuous. People aren’t upset because it simply costs extra money. They’re upset because something like the triple digit ultimate collector’s edition STILL didn’t come with the answer included. And on top of that you are forced to buy it in a bundle. Resident Evil 4 Remake by comparison not only reduced the base game price when the story dlc was remade but the dlc was sold by itself for only 10 bucks. Even if you bought persona 5 twice for when each version launched, you’d still be paying LESS than it would take you to buy all the dlc for reload

5:50 I haven't played (most of) Golden, so I cannot comment on that, but: Episode Aigis: NOT A RERELEASE. Portable: Adds a completely new playthrough to the game with a ton of changes all over, including even a huge deviation in the story, adds new social links, controllable party members, and has a completely different visual presentation (born out of necessity, but still cool), and some totally new and _incredible_ music Royal: adds a mostly inconsequential girl, yes, BUT expands on the best existing character in the game, creates a new, even _better_ character with the best dungeon and best ending of any Persona game so far, introduces several new game mechanics both in battle and outside of it, a whole new section of the map, significantly improves the most criticized part of the game, Mementos, and a lot of extra music to spice things up-even a new battle theme to stand alongside the existing one

I don't think it's just the new content that makes the re-releases sell so well. I think it's more the growth of the brand Persona, and to a lesser degree SMT are growing in popularity. Word of mouth takes time.

Rereleases allow games to be revamped and improved in ways a simple dlc can't do. P5R has better dungeons, improved combat, and many quality of life features. They aren't just being greedy, they want to improve the games. Now, a discount for owning the old version, that sounds great.

I disagree. A common practice nowadays is to patch your game for a year after its release to guarantee customer satisfaction. The features mentioned here are something they could've easily patched during that year and then release the story DLC like most other companies are doing. Re-releasing a game is profitable practice for Atlus but ultimately we as customers are forced to pay for it.

Most of the times, when a re-release happens, it has been long enough that I'm mostly okay with it. It gives me a chance to try a new run again, see what's new, and use my knowledge of the previous game to better the next. I also hate this practice because there is no way to really stop it unless people outright refuse to buy the re-releases, which isn't going to happen, because the people buying the re-releases are a giant mix of old and newcomers of the game. It's either people double-dipping, or buying the game for the first time, either because they waited for this exact re-release, or just because it's the "definitive" version. TLDR; Re-releases come out long enough after the OG, that I'm somewhat okay with it. Hard to prevent this unless Metaphor Revamped joins Soul Hackers 2 in sales.

Theres no problem with rereleases. If there’s interest cuz its a good game like smt v then they do a full game size version and rerelease it. So glad vengeance came. Loved smt v, love smt vv 10x more. They figure out what needs adding but the base game is already amazing.

You missed the part when they usialy add a new semester of gameplay and a new final boss. Atlus game takes so long to make, that a re-relise of an old game with bunch of updates is a cool thing to distract yourself.
