How about a video in which you go into more detail about how you deal with the big stretches on tenor recorder with your small hands?

Hi Sarah! What is the lowest note of these bass recorders? Where can I get them? I'd like to know where would be easy to get them...maybe in Europe or I could get them from USA. The good think is that I live 40 minutes far from the border.

Any advice for correctly positioning the right thumb using the thumb rest? My thumb hurts after just a few minutes of playing. Im guessing I will get used to it over time but I want to make sure I'm not doing it wrong.

Thank you very much, Sarah! It was really interesting for me. ^_^ I also found some information on Paetzolds in the web. And now I'm studying the questions of sound spreading in the tubes %) to model the flute. If I wanted an english, I'd just copy the photo, but I want to build a german Paetzold, so I'm still studying the theory. By the way, don't you have some materials on accoustic theory of the recorders? PS Waiting your video about mics. ^_^

I'm in the market for my first Great Bass and it seems like they are all pitched at A=442. What is the reason for this? Or is it just when the instrument is pushed together the A=442, and when pulled out it can be A=440?
@kevinm.pfeiffer50374 жыл бұрын
Just turn down the temperature slightly in your rehearsal space... ;-) As far as I know, all "440" recorders today are pitched at 442.

Biggest i have is basset and i prefer the tube as my hand do cramp up quickly if i dont. I tried a bend neck, its not for me. Also use a neck strap like with a saxophone. Really interested in the mic video. I want to be able to better record the recorder. (And run it through guitar effect pedals and my marshall amp and scare the neighbours)
@ivansavkin92798 жыл бұрын
To record the recorder it,s better to use a large diaphragm condenser studio mic, and place the recorder parallel the diaphragm a half a meter.

Sarah. I was wondering if you keep your paetzold screwed tight when you are not playing it? or are you deconstructing it each time? or just loosening the screws? I think that I saw somewhere that they recommend loosening the screws, but at the same time they offer a stand for the recorder to stand in.. hm..

Hi Sarah! would you recommend a used Moeck bass recorder from around 1985? It´s from a specialist woodwind shop in the US and is sold with new pads etc. Is it risky to buy and instrument that old? Also, what´s your opinion on the Aulos 533? thank you!!

Hello Sarah, I'm Curious to know what your opinion of Yamaha's wooden Basset and Great-Bass recorder. have you tried the great bass? They are expensive, so I'm curious of the quality of them given Yamaha is large corporation that makes many, many instruments. Are they worth the price?
@Team_Recorder4 жыл бұрын
So I loe my basset! It’s the one shown in this video. I haven’t tried the great bass, but Yamaha wooden instruments are good and very consistent

I’ve always wanted to have one of the bigger recorders like a basset, but they are expensive. what do I do?
@ian.mikyska.944 жыл бұрын
The basset is actually the only one of the big basses that exists in "consumer" versions. Thomann make their own (about a hundred dollars) which isn't great, but it works (more or less); Aulos and Yamaha make slightly more playable instruments around the $400-500 mark.

Sarah, I have short arms and stiff hands/fingers due to Fibromyalgia, and found it impossible to play a normal tenor recorder: I can either cover the holes or get the instrument into my mouth, but not both at the same time - tricky!!! Do you think that a Knick Tenor would help ?
@kailencresp48438 жыл бұрын
I believe there are some "short reach" tenors made by mollenhaure, this may help.

Kailen Cresp thanks I will check them out, What I really need is a music shop where I can try the instruments out before buying,

Im not sure where you live but in Australian capital cities there are quite a few shops that will let you try before you make your mind up.
@honeychurchgipsy68 жыл бұрын
Yeah, proper music shops understand that you need to try b4 buying. I think my nearest good recorder shop is Saunders Recorders in Bristol - quite a drive from Bognor Regis which is in West Sussex.

Love these videos Sarah! I'm getting a tenor after starting out on the soprano, is technique very much different? Anything in particular that I should watch out for or practice when I do get it that's unique to the tenor?
@zarkaylia17358 жыл бұрын
I'd say to watch your fingers and hands. Also, more air. And depending on recorder the higher octaves may be more tricky to reach.

Hi Sarah! Do you have any tips on how to stay motivated? When I have a poor tone because of the weather/acoustics of a place, and try to play a hard passage and fail miserably 70 times I try I get super super demotivated. This is a bit crazy but I cry haha, and I think of really really crazy things like "you will never be a professional recorder player" or "you're terrible, stop it. You're not going to go to the Netherlands any time soon." Haha. And it's really bad because I have a habit of when I start something I have to complete it in one session, so this really really demotivates me. Any tips? (And can you confirm to my negative self that every musician goes through this) haha thank you!

Sarah, you are awesome and I love your videos, but I hate to break it to you: yes, there very much is a difference between left and right-handed playing. Throughout history, not only in the western European recorder tradition but all over the world, it was common for right and left handed players to play different instruments, and makers only stopped making left handed recorders when the instrument started to decline in popularity. I am right-handed, however I play all of my wind instruments left-handed, and playing right-handed on my Tenor recorder with compensated fingering is a huge pain and is very difficult and unnatural. As a right-handed player, I can understand why you would think that there is no difference and that "its just moving fingers", but this is not the case and never has been for as long as the recorder has been around.
@martilewis443567 жыл бұрын
As a flute player, I have to disagree. We play one way, whether we are right- or left-handed. We have to be good with both hands.
@rsjcoman92307 жыл бұрын
As of only about 150-200 years ago. The right-handed only phenomenon is very, very young in the world of wind instruments. As a matter of fact, it also only exists in western classical music. You go anywhere else, even as near geographically as Ireland and Romania, and it is standard for left-handed players to play inverted.
@TheAvgCommentator5 жыл бұрын
@@rsjcoman9230 Wait so where (historically) would you put your dominant hand? The top side or the bottom side? I feel it'd be natural to put my dominant hand on the bottom side, because it has a lot of the harder stuff: the forked F, and the double holes on the last two fingers. But then again, I'm right-handed, so it makes sense why I'd think that. It's what I already know.
@rsjcoman92305 жыл бұрын
@@TheAvgCommentator I don't think we can ever be sure of this (considering they're all dead today) but yes, based off of the instruments made in the distant past I think that's a reasonable guess. It is much more common for instruments to be made with the right hand on the bottom, simply because more people are right-handed than left-handed. I personally am an anomaly, because I transitioned to the recorder from an instrument that does the opposite (namely putting the dominant hand on top, this has to do with the style of playing), and thus playable recorders are very hard to come by for me.
