The Big Texan Steak Ranch - 72 oz Steak Challenge

I attempted the world famous 72 oz Steak Challenge at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. It's probably one of the oldest food challenges still active, and It was huge! The challenge consisted of a salad, 72 oz steak, 3 fried shrimp, a baked potato, and a roll. The challengers have 1 hour to complete the challenge and win the meal for free, a t-shirt, a souvenir boot mug, and your name on their wall of fame! Everything was delicious and the challenge was a lot of fun. The Big Texan puts the challengers on center stage. During the challenge, a lot of people come up to checkout the challenge, wish us luck, and take photos. Another challenger (Eric) decided to come and try this at the same time I did, so we were both put on stage at the same time to attempt this. It was great meeting Eric and his wife; they were awesome and on their own adventure. Anyway, checkout the video to see how I did.

earlier for dinner i trimmed 2 new york strip steaks that i bought on sale and the precooked weight was a little over 21 ounces , i was STUFFED there is no way i could do this - congratulations

Everything was great and went down easy. So much so, you probably saw, I got a cookie sundae afterwards. It wasn’t as big as other challenges either. The only tip I have is not to over cook your steak. I ordered mine medium rare and it was soft and juicy. Eric, the other challenger, ordered his steak cooked more, and it was a little dry and harder to eat (according to him). Go for it!

Win or lose, you’ll have fun! As far as tips, come hungry and don’t overcook the steak. A dry steak is harder to eat. I recommend med-rare. Make this your only meal for the day. I did this passing through Amarillo on a road trip as well. Good luck!

@@OldGuyEats not insulting you. I once was a surface sailor... I can and have done some weirdo shit also... I got a t shirt for eating 10 hot wings in 11 minutes The wings... While being prepared, the cook wore a gas mask, I could smell the wings being prepared at the counter. When the wings were brought to me The wings were on fire, burning on a metal tray... I asked should I blow the flame out? The guy said, "I think you should." I blew the wings out and ate all of the wings in 11 minutes. The stupidest... One of the stupidest thing I have done... Weird enough for you? Congratulations.... That was a gigantic meal

I believe it is butterflied sirloin; although, I’m not positive. It was cooked very good (med rare). You tell them how you want it, and they let you try it before the challenge starts. If it’s not cooked to your liking, tell them.

There are quite a few people that eat more and faster than me. As for the 72oz steak challenge specifically, the record is set by Molly Schuyler (@mollyschuyler-Mom-Vs-Food), 3 challenge meals in 20 min. Absolutely amazing.

I answered this on the short video for you as well.. Yes. The stake was huge, which made it harder to cut up, so I cut it in half and put half on another plate to give me more room. I believe it made managing it a little easier. 👍

Yes. It was very tender. I got mine med-rare. Everything was cooked very well. They even let you take your first bite before the time starts to ensure the steak is cooked to your liking.

Hi. I Once Met a Person Who Says That He Ate The 72 Oz Steak and completed the Challenge. He is No Longer Living but I Wonder if It Was True. He Did Have A Lot of Years Of Eating At Several places. He was From Florissant Missouri. Calvin Plummer. Don't Know if Anyone Would Know That Name but He Was A Cool Person. This was In the 1980s or early 1990s. Just Saw That Video and Thought of That Person. 😊

I can’t say that I’ve heard of Calvin Plummer. As for The Big Texan, they have been doing this challenge since 1960 and there have now been more than 10,000 people finish the meal (more than 90.000 have tried). It’s a fun challenge. Thank you for sharing.

They will cook it to your preference. They even have you cut into it and take a bite to ensure it’s cooked right before starting the timer. They are very fair from that perspective.

The only mistake the guy made was handing over his card to the young lady no suggestion of impropriety from me but in this day and age people can skim clone your card in seconds always have one eye on your wallet and one on your bulging content tummy
