The german Pz. III 50mm is almost as long as the US 75mm. But it has a higher velocity because there is less space for in the barrel and so the charge preassure is greater(also a lighter round excelerates faster in the barrel). Also while you are already reading this can we just apreciate that gaijin made a animation where a wave breaking thingy pops out on the front of the M901 but the thing it self cant even swim. Also there are lots of things wrong with the M901's handeling moddel. It's the same chassie with the same engine and almost the same weight as the M163 and yet when you drive around in both vehicles you will see that they are handeling completely different.

The projectile mass on the Object 906 APCBC shell is 9.3 kg and on the Object 685 it's 15.9 kg. Muzzle velocities are 1040 m/s and 887 m/s respectively. The kinetic energy at the muzzle is 5.03 MJ and 6.25 MJ respectively, which is basically the amount of work that the expanding propellant gases can impart on the round in each case. So the bigger round only has roughly 25% more kinetic energy. Makes sense, because the breech block can't be much larger since it has to fit in the turret - and the shell casing has to fit in the breech block, so there's not much more room for a bigger boom. Since the 100mm shell is bigger than the 85mm shell, it has about 38% larger cross-section area. This means the energy density at impact is about 88.6 kJ/cm^2 for the 85mm shell, and 79.6 kJ/cm^2 for the 100mm shell. So, the 85mm shell has roughly 11% better energy density at impact - at muzzle velocity. At further ranges the ballistic coefficients will determine which shell slows down faster, and the energy density changes accordingly. Looking at penetrations at point blanc range, the 85mm shell has 244 mm, and the 100mm shell has 239 mm of penetration. In actuality this is only a difference of about 2%, so clearly other things than impact energy density also matter - the formula used by Gaijin for APCBC penetration calculation is much more complicated than just comparing the impact energy densities. But impact energy density is one of the things that determine how much the shell can deform the target material and force its way through a hole of its own size.

Don't forget velocity is based off the amount of gunpowder you used to send the projectile so the more gunpowder you have and the longer a barrel is combined is what makes the round go to higher velocities

The 100mm has a lower velocity because the shell tip basically basically doubles in size while retaining the same barrel length and probably a similar powder charge, of course the 85mm is gonna be faster, it's lighter and also, speed equals penetration when it comes to shells so that's why it has higher pen, it's kinda like comparing a 308 win to a 44 mag

There is less propellant in 100mm shells. Because the gun can't recoil much, tank is very light for this

So, some gun physics for Phloppy. For the same caliber round, a longer barrel will smooth out the pressure curve of firing a round (at least in small arms, not sure how it would differ for tank rounds). This would allow you to use a larger charge of a slower burning powder that will produce a longer pressure curve, applying more overall force to the projectile, usually allowing it to be shot at a higher velocity. Now, when you change calibers, such as going to a larger caliber, then you need a faster burning powder to fill the increased bore volume at the same rate. Coupled with a (typically) heavier projectile, your pressure curve will spike more rapidly and limit the velocity that can be reached.

Regarding the barrel length, there's quite a few different factors at play. -To make this a bit easier to understand, lets focus on the energy of a projectile leaving the barrel at a certain speed. Mass * Velocity = Energy. Velocity increases as barrel length increases, but only to a certain length. The expanding gas of the propellant creates pressure behind the projectile, pushing it forward, but as the projectile travels down the barrel, the area the gas occupies and the speed of the projectile increases, so the pressure of the propellant decreases and the less effect it has on the increasingly faster projectile. Eventually, in addition to the energy loss due to friction, the effects of the propellant become negligible or even drop into the negative. -The reason to have a longer barrel than the effective acceration length is to increase accuracy and stability, but that comes at a cost of energy. Correcting the trajectory of a projectile creates friction between it and the barrel, as does adding spin to the projectile to give it stability. And the heavier the projectile, the larger the friction. -Another factor is the materials and design tech. These limit how much pressure and friction can be sustained due to the propellant and trajectory correction, respectively. This puts a hard limit on the total energy you can fire out the barrel. If you increase the mass, by necessity you'll have to decrease the velocity, and vice versa. -Finally, the gas porting device will also increase the length of a barrel. Controlling the way the gas escapes the barrel is important in controlling the sound output and, more importantly, how the barrel moves in response to the kickback from the expanding gas slaming into the air outside the barrel. It can affect the trajectory of the projectile, in addition to recoil direction of the gun, so it's important to control how the gas escapes the barrel. The length of the barrel, therefor, can increase based on the design of the gas porting.

I believe the difference in ballistics between the 85mm and 100mm has to do with a few things. Firstly: The 85mm Shell weighs less, so it accelerates faster down the same length of barrel. Secondly: The larger 100mm shell sits farther back in it's casing, meaning less powder than could perhaps go in. The inner chamber design of the breech does not allow for a longer cartridge. Finally: The 100mm Shell is less aerodynamic naturally because it is larger. It will have a larger shockwave, slow down faster, and in general because it is thicker, will have a harder time punching a hole in metal. If you try to hit a pipe through a sheet of steel, it probably won't go through, where a nail has a better chance.

The reason I think maps that have a cap near enemy spawn is fine is because its a battle of attrition, if you push the point with multiple enemies still up thats on you. The cap only exists to allow your team/the enemy to win without waiting on the guy stuck at an airfield repairing.

7:40 Problems with repair in warthunder is you either have the robocraft problem or the world of tanks problem. Make it any faster to repair damage to combat function modules (engine, traverse, elevation, gun, gunner, driver) and then suddenly the only damage that matters is damage that outright kills the player in one shot or at least disables enough modules to allow a follow up shot to kill, which essentially doesn't make a difference. Make it any slower then the game grinds to a halt and any slight scratch on anything basically means your game is over with no chance to recover in anything but the most outstanding situation. You can either make it fun to be shot at or fun to shoot players where its possible to 1-tap, but you can't do both.

Barrel length is usually marked by comparison to the caliber. Like Leo2A4 gun is called L44, meaning the barrel length is 44 times 120mm. What I'm trying to say is, that the 906 has relatively longer barrel than the 100mm on the big brother.

BR-412D is the same round as on the T-55A, so they pretty much just copy pasted the stats over to the Obj 685.... Gaijin being super lazy

It's also the same gun. 2A48 (aka D-33) is the lightweight modification of the D-10T gun, with 600 kg shaved off. Apparently it had longer recoil path because of that, bu the same ballistics.

All things being equal, gun velocity is tied to the ratio of diameter to barrel length. If the 85 and 100 have similar barrel lengths, the 85 will be faster if loaded to the same chamber pressures. The second thing to consider is overall recoil and if the turret can handle it. If an 85 and 100 are loaded to produce the same velocity, the 100 will have much higher recoil. Keep in mind these tanks need to stay light enough for anfib work.

I really like the modeled auto-ejection system on the main gun, adds some nice vibe to it. Phly, a question to you as a professional War Tinder player: do you think it is possible they add the Panavia Tornado as a new 10.0 jet for the British and German tech tree? Because with the mechanics they introduced with supersonic jets, I think they could add a variable-sweep wing plane as well and give the players the control of the wing angle, like with flaps. Either go fast but turn bad or turn well but lose acceleration and top speed. It would be a really cool mechanic and the Tornado has a 27mm gun on board, so it would be okay-ish with the dogfight gamestyle War Thunder has, plus a ton of loadout options with air to air and air to ground missiles, and also a lot of bombs. Also the Tornado has supersonic capabilities flying just above ground, so it could also perform in its role as a low altitute ground striker, to counter top tier radar SPAA.

I think repair times are fine in War Thunder. It makes it so you have to take cover and actually be out of the fight if you're damaged instead of just reversing, repairing, and eating more shots quickly. Also, it provides great opportunities for advancing the line. If you take out gun barrels or breaches on enemy tanks, you're free to move up and push them back. Again, better than being able to just repair in a few seconds and eat shots for days. What I don't think is fine is people who spend money to get crew points to get repairs to go faster and have an advantage. Since there are so many more important things to put points in, repair speed usually isn't as high for most people, people who are grinding crews the normal way.

As far as the velocity is concerned, it could be using a different type of powder that burns more efficiently. I'm not certain how tank rounds work, but I know that with small arms, different types of powder can affect velocity dramatically. Also, it matters how much powder is going in the round. Maybe the 100mm has less of a charge in it compared to the 85mm. Or maybe the charges are equal and because the 85mm projectile is lighter, it travels faster. Kind of like how a M2 .50 Caliber travels faster than a MG 151 20mm.

Barrel length increases velocity. 100mm L54 did not have a high velocity. Looks like the 85mm may be beefed up to equal an 88L71 instead of a 76L55

Repair times arent bad perse, however I think you should be able to prioritize repairing certain components and the repair times should be a set time, independent of crew training. Tracks = 15 seconds, barrel = 20. If multiple components are damaged it defaults to the longest repairing item, but thats where prioritization comes in. Allows lower level players to not suffer if they shoot a lvl 100 who reps a breech in 10 seconds.

I think the repair time just needs to be balanced. I’ve noticed before that I’ve had loads of components damaged yet it takes less time to repair than a breach with the same level of damage

You should be able to repair "non-critical" systems on the move if theyre not involved with transport.

Gun physics 101: at this scale of gun, overall length of barrel matters less than how many calibres (as in, the diameter of the round being loaded) in length the barrel is. An 85mm gun that is 44 calibres long will be 3,740mm or 3.74m long, and will typically perform better velocity-wise than a 100mm gun that has a 3.74m barrel since the barrel on the 100mm is only 37 calibres long. Edit to add: this is also why you see "L/44" or "L/52" in descriptions of tank guns, this refers to their length in calibres.
