You might not like my video (and that's okay, not everyone has to like my videos) but other people are allowed to enjoy them and appreciate them. As for my criticism of Pakistan, I specifically say that this video is not meant to be critical, it is simply my oberservations of Pakistan as a tourist. I do talk about some things I don't like about Pakistan because I think honesty is important. I really liked Pakistan as a whole and I liked a lot of things about Pakistan. Things we can do to make our guests' stay better: 1. Stop staring. 2. Refrain from asking for pictures. 3. Avoid taking pictures of guests without their permission. 4. Remain humble. 5. Maintain a respectful distance. 6. Be polite and show respect. We want the same for our own families, so we should create a safe environment for tourists visiting our country, allowing them to fully enjoy their stay.

14:36 Food Menu issue. It's because of different seasons. Our food might get change with the change of a season. So you might not find things mentioned on menu every given time. For example if you ordered Fish during summer in the central region, they might not be able to serve you that because people here don't eat fish in summer. There are many others too. Moreover, The breakfast, Lunch and Dinner dishes can also vary. We being Pakistani never actually noticed it untill you mentioned this in the vlog. I guess the restaurant managers must arrange different menus for different occassions or seasons.
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
Those might be the reasons for sure! As a tourist I found it suuuuuper confusing tho 😅 I wasn't aware you couldn't order certain things during certain periods of time, so it was really confusing when they didn't have it. But also at times, they didn't have like 90% of the menu which made it really difficult to order haha. Everything I ended up eating was delicious tho 🤗

Hi, Pakistan is different from Europe, there is a huge gap between the social classes not only economically but culturally as well. Every city has Posh areas where wearing Western clothes or culture is a norm however since you were going to historical and tourist monuments and markets, the tourists are normally from small cities of Pakistan and they are more conservative in old areas of cities low middle-class people live, who are more traditional dress. That's one of the biggest reasons for all the stares. Posh and High Class area people avoid to visit these places to be honest, just because the face the same stares
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
That's very interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing it with me! 🤗
@ansazeem123425 күн бұрын
@@lauraabornstein yeah the high degree of polarization means there are sort of unofficial socio-economic zones where you would hardly see people of the opposite socio-economic class as opposed to somewhere in the west where people freely mix. You'd be hard pressed to see someone from a rural area in a place like DHA raya for example or someone from a posh background at a historical site
@lauraabornstein25 күн бұрын
@@ansazeem1234 That's very interesting, I knew there was definitely inequality when it comes to socio economic class in Pakistan (I didn't go to any of the posh parts of the country but I did see a number of tourists in Gilgit Baltistan who seemed to come from wealthy Pakistani families. They drove more expensive cars and often wore more western, trending clothing). I wasn't aware tho that people from different socio economic classes didn't mix and that there was such a gap. I'm curious, as a Pakistani how do you feel about this? In Europe I think we would consider this kind of behaviour very elitist, but I'm curious to know what you guys think
@ansazeem123425 күн бұрын
@@lauraabornstein Years of beuracratic and establishment level discrimination has led us to this point. At the grassroots level, children in more western countries from various backgrounds would freely mix in a public school. Over here however the condition of public schools is deplorable so everyone tries to get into a private school of their stature depending on what kind of school they can afford. That's where the class divide begins. And yeah it is sad

Thanks, Laura! I believe this is the first video where you articulated all the facts about Pakistan so well. As a Pakistani, I completely agree with you about the crazy traffic. Even though I live in Germany now, whenever I visit Pakistan, dealing with the chaotic traffic feels overwhelming. You’re right about the toilets not being in the Western style-Pakistan has its own unique culture and customs and people are following since decades. As you mentioned American pop music isn’t very popular in Pakistan, and I think there are a couple of reasons for this. First, English isn’t first language in Pakistan, and only a small percentage of people speak or understand English. Second, Pakistanis tend to prefer more traditional or classic music styles, which resonate more with their culture. Regarding the stares, it’s true that you’ll experience a lot of them, mainly because not many foreigners visit Pakistan. However, I believe these stares aren’t hostile; people are just curious. If you say hello, most will respond with a warm smile😊 One thing that surprised me was your comment about feeling intimidated by men in shalwar kameez. I think this perception stems from how Western media often portrays people in this traditional dress as being violent. In reality, it’s just a cultural norm, and media stereotypes can be misleading, and these dresses are very comfortable, specially in hot summer. You also mentioned the frequent military checkpoints. This is true, as Pakistan isn’t fully a democratic country; the military establishment still holds significant control over many aspects of governance. Thank you for visiting Pakistan and highlighting its incredible hospitality and delicious food. Greetings from Germany!
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the video and I 100% agree with you on everything you said! Thanks a lot for all the explanations too, they're very insightful As for the Shalwar Kameez, you're right. The perception in Western media is really bad, so subconciously I associated it with violence and was intimidated by it, even though I know that isn't really the case
@arslanulhaq2806Ай бұрын
Thank for the amazing and honest review. In Pakistan you will find the best vegetarian options but at homes cooked by the mothers usually. People often eat vegetarian at their houses since they are cheaper. Whevever, they go to a restaurant they go to eat some good meat dishes because eating vegetarian in a resutrant doesn't make sense as they eat them most of the time at their houses. That's one of the reasons for finding a lot of meat dishes in the restaurants. Please do visit us again and this time perhaps explore baluchistan such as Hingol National Park (the place looks like Mars on Earth).

I totally get your point about the pop culture, that maybe due to the inaccessibility of western media/entertainment (and english being a second language) to the masses, there definitely are people in Pakistan (especially in the big cities) who are up to date with the western pop culture, I remember when 1D was a big thing. however, as a traveller, I feel like globalisation has taken away the uniqueness of places, it isn't much fun or exciting if I am shopping on a vacation and everything is exactly the same as back home. that's why I truly admire places that have largely kept their own culture intact.
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
Of course! I imagine there are some people who keep up with Western pop culture, but it doesn't seem like most people do. 2:10 basically people do that to avoid getting penalty or ticket, they don't prefer to wear helmet for their own safety which is also a dumb thing but this is the reality.
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
That's very interesting, thanks for letting me know. But wouldn't it be easier to just wear the helmet than to carry it? 😅 It seems like more effort to avoid the rule than to actually follow it
@muhammadmirza3831Ай бұрын
I read it in letter to the editor that many people have blood pressure issues and find helmet too heavy to wear. If government really cares about their safety then they should improve road quality
@wasiqatiq2774Ай бұрын
@@lauraabornstein well in Karachi the heat is the main factor, if you wear helmet for straight 6,7 hours on bike in afternoon then you might get a heatstroke which is now unfortunately being very common here , so this might be the reason for Karachi but I can't give this reason for other cities...
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
@@muhammadmirza3831 That's interesting to know, thanks. Certainly if that's a problem a public health campaign would help, and sure, improving the quality of the roads is great. But if you have a motorcyle accident with no helmet on you're going to get hurt (or worse) no matter how good the road is
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын

@ i moved to west 30+ years ago, and we know how was the situation in that region and not many western tourists in Pakistan. And not much social media awareness. Today i see there are 50+ vloggers from different western countries visiting Pakistan. And i have list of all those. If any native western person ask what is Pakistan and where is it. Instead of saying anything else or telling them to google. I simply ask them to visit these vloggers channels and you’ll find the answer…….. After seeing your videos, quite happy to say i have added one more vlogger from west to my list to broadcast to locals here in west. ✌️

Thank you for visiting & narrating your journey with all its ups & downs so well. Sorry for the stares by ppl that made you uncomfortable. The thing is locals are not used to see many foreigners among them and are not educated enough on this matter particularly that how staring is frowned upon in the west, this would require much effort and education by the government on this matter. Secondly, to sum it up, i'd say Pakistan gives you quite a raw traveling experience .. some of the world's best sceneries in most rugged places to go through .. if ppl want to really "feel" their traveling experiences in raw form then it's one of the best places to travel to .. but if one just likes to sleep through the travel & wake up in a fancy place ..i think Pakistan is not for that !!
@lauraabornsteinАй бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video 🤗 And I completely agree with you, Pakistan is not a luxury destination, but it is a very raw and rewarding one for sure! As for the stares, I'm not angry at anyone for staring, I understand foreigners are not common in Pakistan, I just found it a bit uncomfortable at times and difficult to get used to 😅

Thank you so much Miss Laura for debunking what media portrays about Pakistan. Yes Pakistan is different than your perception of global effects. Due is that to our religious heritage , local culture which is still strong and curtail of true progress in the country so west and their local allies i.e elite class is seen more and more as perpetrators by majority. So culturally Indian film industry and Pakistani drama are followed more here along with music in which India is the leader now along with Pakistan's qawwali and ghazal now perhaps (i direly hope and pray 😂😂) following closely. You also very intricately indicated few things which we as society should improve. Again thank you for that and i hope that as many people would go through this video, your message will spread. 🙂🙂

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate your comment and I'm glad you liked the video! 🫶🥹 Regarding the last part of your comment though, I don't want to tell Pakistanis what to do with their country or society, that is up to you and I don't want to intrude. I just wanted to be honest about the things that surprised me and the things I struggled with. That said, the vast majority of my time in Pakistan was great! I would 100% return to Pakistan and I highly recommend it as a tourism destination for other travelers 🤗

Using squating toilets and water to clean in the toilets is more hygienic than western toilet seats and wipes. We also when visit Europe or west, We are shocked with those toilets and it becomes very difficult to manage oneself but that's how the different cultures are.
