I'm not really a diamond person, but the one historical diamond I've seen that made an impression on me is the Orlov/Orloff diamond. It was given by Grigory Orlov to Catherine the Great in hopes of rekindling their relationship. However, Catherine had moved on to Potemkin, but she gave Orlov some consolation prizes, including the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg (not too shabby). She also named the diamond after him and had it set into a sceptre. This is now held in the Kremlin Armoury. Oh, and it also has one of those '"set in the eye of an Indian idol" origin stories but now supposedly most scholars think it actually is the Great Mogul Diamond.

I think I may be a little strange, but I find the rough, uncut stone more fascinating that the resulting cut stones. Nature at its best! I love the Hope Diamond, as blue is my favorite color, and who doesn't love a good curse story?! But I am truly enchanted by pink diamonds! Love hearing about famous artifacts and other objects! Thank you. The Amber Room was surprisingly hard to put together actually, as I couldn't access most of the primary sources myself and the secondaries didn't always agree with each other. Go walk the dogs. You don't want them messing up the house! :-)

Fascinating and beautifully described. Hard to comprehend that the steel used to split this massive diamond broke trying to break it! That must have been very stressful. My birthstone is Sapphire, although my favourite stone is Aquamarine, I love the way it sparkles and changes colour - I wear a gorgeous Aquamarine ring, the stone is surrounded by tiny diamonds and is on a band of white gold - although not as large or priceless as the Cullinan Diamond, it's still my little treasure. ♪ Aquamarines are a girl's best friend ♪ hasn't got the same ring to it, has it?

As pretty as the gems are, I can't help but think about the exploitation of the native South Africans which was required to both establish the colony and to set up the mining operation which eventually revealled the Cullinan. Maybe that makes me a downer but I feel like this jewel is a perfect example of England's exploitation of foreign peoples for its own gain.

My heart goes out to the family of the person who, I suspect, found the actual diamond. During this era, and the way the British took claim for finding anything, makes me think the actual finder claimed nothing. The diamond is beautiful. I saw the Stars when I went to the UK as a child in the 70s. Diamond is my birthstone, so I’ve always loved them. I didn’t realize that the raw stone they came from made so many beautiful stones.

My favorite diamond was a pear shaped 1/2 carat that my late husband gave me for our engagement. A friend of mine always kept her jewelry in the freezer for safe keeping. Sooooo….I thought that a clever idea and did the same thing. You guessed it! I threw it away when I cleaned out my freezer. Bless him, he NEVER let me live that down (nor should he). Well, it seems today one of the largest pink diamonds sold for 57.8 million dollars. Well god bless whomever can afford that. Well well Frederick Wells. I'm sure a manager would be casting an experienced eye most of the time at the diggings, rather like fossil hunters know what to look for on the ground. I can also imagine the possibility that one of the workers found the rock and handed it over as you mentioned. If so I hope a few crumbs were thrown his way. "I understand" the British, and it was not necessary to listen to the words of David Cameron when he said: if we say yes to one, tomorrow we will wake up and we will have nothing in the British museum" to realize that it is so. If they had to return everything they owe, they would be left with nothing, because he basically said in other words, that everything they have is stolen or taken by force. But what surprises me the most is that, despite all that, British and Western citizens are so arrogant, I would be embarrassed to tell an African who is in your country trying to make a living to go to his country and things like that. But the foundations of yours were made with everything you stole from ours. I think it's a mixture of ignorance and arrogance because if they had to pay and return everything they amassed, they would even run out of spoons.

I've always been intrigued by Diamonds. Whatever their colour. I was given a ring many years ago. It had Black Diamonds set in white and yellow gold Including platinum holding them in situ. Unfortunately I was having a party ... person or persons unknown decided to relieve me of it's possession. Aside from the fact it was unusual - primarily it was the fact it took 3•2 Billion years for Nature to create those Black Diamonds.

My mum lived in London all her life, and never once went to the ToL to see the crown jewels 💎. I've lived on the south coast 20 odd years and have been to see them three times! Each time is a source of wonderment. They are all stunningly beautiful.

So we've just had a cullinan 60th birthday party for a member of our family who spent the last 24 years tracing our ancestral history, turns out Thomas Cullinan who owned the land the diamond was found on is part of our family, so we would like our rock back please 😂 joking aside, the Cullinan family is very much a fascinating story. I met family members this weekend i never even knew existed. I highly recommend people to do the DNA ancestry journey, you never know what or who you might find and come together with.

ok, let's settle what a lot of people are saying here. Clearly a lot of you didn't watch the video. Firstly the person who found the diamond was awarded $10,000 which would have been a fortune back then. Secondly, the diamond was purchased by The Transvaal company and it was then gifted by them to King Edward in 1907. So the diamond was NOT stolen. Got that? Good.

Nothing in the history of this Diamond even comes close to it being stolen. The closest thing we got is the alleged Black miner who found it. He was an employee of said mine so of course he wasn't allowed to keep it.

@@Jack-Hands Both the mine and company managers were also employees who weren't allowed to "keep it", and didn't. But one was awarded with credit for the find, 10,000$, and historical recognition, and the other immortalized in the name the diamond. We may not have the full story (such as a somewhat diminished award the miner received) And history is full of the anonymous people whose hard work and sacrifice paved the way to others' glory and fortune. From time to time we have to think about the unknown soldiers and laborers whose names are lost to history.

Tell Africa to take a hike, it's been in UK'S hands for over 100 years and no one's been try to claim it as theirs until the queen dies. If that's the real case , what was your problem with her having it ? But not her heir ? In my opinion it should have stayed in it's original state.
