It goes both ways. I live on a lake in Michigan and have a dock. I have no issue with anyone fishing around or under my dock...except when I'm on my dock fishing! Its amazing how many boat fisherman can have zero respect for someone fishing off a dock. Stop casting and go around me...its not that hard to be courteous. When Im in my boat I always make sure to go well around a dock/shore fisherman to not crowd them at all.

One can argue that some tournament anglers are similarly possessive about fishing spots when confronting week end/recreational fishermen who have every right to fish that spot👍
@kmbbmj585719 сағат бұрын
While I disagree with the tactics they use, I do have some sympathy for dock owners. Not all fishermen are polite either and I've seen many of the slinging big jigs against the side of the boat or getting big crank baits hung in the upholstery, or leaving hooks and line hung on the dock for the kids to get hooks in their feet. So there is that side of it as well.

Well here,s another take I lived for 7 years on a 65 foot cruiser on the St. John’s River in Palatka in a Marina. Most bass anglers even the Elites were courteous and didn’t cause any issues. But there were several big tournaments where a couple of nimrods threw a crank bait and damaged more than 1,000 dollars of canvas. I know this because I have the lure. Then a team of two got on my boat and tried to retrieve a stuck lure also in my canvas. I was home and it scared the sh-t out of me coming face to face with these morons at 6 am. So there are both sides to this thing, share the river and be courteous to each other. I love to bass fish all they had to do is ask I would have helped them.

I usually don’t have problems with dock owners. In my opinion, I would have gone around this dock owner with all his cat fish poles. But you were 16 and going to fish everywhere. To me this dock owner with rods out is really no different than you fishing your favorite rock point with jerk baits. I wouldn’t come in on you while you were on the point. I usually keep an eye out for the residents of docks while fishing. If a family is picnicking and swimming, I just go around and say hello. There are 30 more docks along the bank to fish. I usually end up having pleasant conversations with the dock owners, and often renew our friendships on future fishing days. It helps to say pleasant things about their lake homes, landscape and their favorite football teams. Also, when I leave a slough or cove of docks and home owners, I try to make a point to idle a good distance away and out into the lake before blasting off. No one wants to hear a 250 hp outboard blasted by creating wave action and disturbing the peace. Just idle out. My worst experience with a dock owner was quite serious. I was fishing a bank of docks and up ahead I noticed a middle age man exit the front of his home with a high powered deer rifle and scope. He came down to his dock and sat in a chair and stared at me. As I approached his dock, I stared back and went around. No words were spoken. I started fishing the next dock and continued. The man continued to watch me as I fished along. It was a creepy experience that I still think about today.
@wildcatamount17 сағат бұрын
I'm with you. If someone is on their dock, I usually avoid it and wave as I go by. Sometimes, if they are in the yard near the dock, I'll ask if they mind if I fish around it. Often around here, they ask if I'm catching anything. I'm not going to get into a confrontation about a fish that may or may not be there. Fishing shouldn't be stressful. There are other fish out there.

There was a couple of homeowners on a lake I lived on that felt the water and fish under the dock were theirs. One even threw furniture at a wade fisherman which was illegal. The local game warden straightened him out. He then took builders twine and wrapped from post to post 6 " or so from water. Casters skipped under, pole fishermen threw over then yanked bream over line. The man finally gave up. I welcomed fisherman at my dock , usually asking how fishing was and pointing out close docks that had produced for me. It's only a few bad apples.

I live on Lake Murray. and have been fishing it for more than 60 years. If it weren't for docks, there would be little to no shoreline structure due to all the waterfront houses that have been allowed to clear shoreline. I've seen if both ways. Been yelled at by a dock owner or homeowner for fishing around or on what they called their personal brushpile, and also had anglers come up and hold onto my dock or boat while practically camping out for an hour or more. In both cases, it shows a lack of respect. I don't mind anglers fishing around my dock or on the brush I put out near it and I'll fish around others' docks just like everyone else. Like you say, it's a public lake, but both anglers and dock owners should show some respect and tolerance for each other.
@RonBand0118 сағат бұрын
I have had several situations like this over the years. There is a KZbin video of a guy getting shot at by a dock owner for no reason. The law in N.C. is that the dock owner actually only owns the land so many feet above the high water mark of the lake. Most have to have permission from the state or the lake owner (such as Duke energy) to put a dock in the water. That means that they own the dock, not the water under it.
@thomasbrown665111 сағат бұрын
First question - Was it legal to fish with that many lines? I thought there was a limit and it was definitely under 50... So if he was over the number of legally allowable lines, call the cops and report a wildlife violation. Next question, don't you have to be physically present to fish? I thought that not being present and observing the lines was considered another type of wildlife / fishing violation? Finally an observation - Responsible usage of a public resource like a lake should be a privilege, not a given right. For those who continually harass anglers, the privilege to place a dock onto a body of water should be revoked along with a progressive fine. I would favor a 3 strikes line of reasoning, on the 3rd strike or complaint you loose the dock privilege. First complaint that's found to be substantiated is a $250 fine, 2nd $500, 3rd is $2,500.

How many lines is one allowed to have in the water in that lake or state. In Wisconsin, I believe you are allowed 3 lines per person. If this guy is over the line limit, the DNR I'm sure would have like to know that.

We have a smaller lake where i live. I live like 5 mins away from it so im there all the time. If im on the bank and i see a boat coming through fishing the bank im on, ill let them know then can throw by me a few times and ill just walk up the bank. THe way i look at it is they mightve travelled hour or two to fish there and i can show up everyday. Obviously since i know the lake well im usually at some good spots off the bank so i understand that maybe the boat guys were looking forward to fishing there. So instead we can compromise. They wont have to completely skip the spot and get to pitch in a few times then go on their way.

In Ontario Canada the Fish and Wildlife act section 13 states the following : Obstruction of hunting, trapping or fishing 13 (1) A person shall not interfere with lawful hunting, trapping or fishing by, (a) tampering with traps, nets, bait, firearms or any other thing used for hunting, trapping or fishing; (b) placing himself or herself in a position, for the purpose of interfering, that hinders or prevents hunting, trapping or fishing; or (c) engaging in an activity, for the purpose of interfering, that disturbs or is likely to disturb wildlife or fish. I think there should have never been any development of any kind on our lakes and rivers. No houses, no docks, no subdivisions. Just woods,water,and wildlife. I agree that water under the docks belongs to the taxpayers and these assholes have no right to stop someone from fishing around them as long as the fisherman will be respectful. The dock owners should be respectful also and realize the water does not belong to them.

My friend caught one nice smallmouth. We walk down to the local tavern for supper. Waitress takes our order and walks away. A few moments later an older woman seated next to her husband at the bar walks over and picks up a menu off the floor the Waitress had dropped. I hadn't even noticed it. She then proceeds to chat with us. Asks what brought us to town. Tell her were from outta state and came to fish. Told her we were struggling. She hollars at her husband. He comes over and tells us we need to fish his dock. I get out my phone and pull up Google maps so he shows me his house and dock. Told him we'd start there in the morning. We get there at day light and he's standing out in the yard and gave us a wave. We crushed em! The fish were all over his and his neighbors docks. I had a limit of 26# of smallmouth that day. All thanks to the nice elderly couple we met at the bar.
