After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. Another really handy thing to consider, is draws, rather than big cupboards. As pulling out draws is a lot easier than having to reach into cupboards. If you check out the full before and after tour. I have a pantry closet in the kitchen in my apartment that has shelves , so what I did was put in sliding metal drawers that I've bought at Lowes home improvement store, not only does it make it easier to get canned and packaged food items / small appliances such as a hand mixer out, it looks pretty too.

I'm having mine done by my local council on a grant and its really exciting! I'm having my downstairs bathroom refitted, my kitchen made accessible, a new doorway added to make getting in and out of the kitchen easier and a steplift at the front of the house. I have MS so they're also kitting me out with an electric wheelchair. My biggest issue is trying to figure out a colour scheme for the kitchen as I've never decorated a place before and I'm both nervous and excited to do that haha. I'm so looking forward to having it all done, I miss cooking and having more independence in my house, and not feeling so stuck here as the front of my house is totally inaccessible, I can't go in and out by myself at all as there are several steps! Its been lovely to see yours getting done, giving me inspiration for mine! I love your wood worktops, they're so beautiful :)

Interesting point you made about the kettle. Heres a question though. Could you use the hose feature to fill up the kettle. Just set it on the side by the sink then fill up as desired with the hose. Its great seeing what youve done with your kitchen.

Our biggest kitchen mistake was cheap lower cabinets. Laminated particle board just hasn’t stood up well to 25 years of power wheelchair strikes; scrapes can’t be repaired, and once the particle board is compromised, it’s hard to do things like screw the doors back on. Wood would have been better. I sure wish your wall oven supplier did business in the US!

Ahhh good points. Unfortunatly, with our budget we could have soild wood, or marble. It would have also been too heavy for the lowerd top. I just hope it lasts ok .. x

I’m not in a wheelchair yet. But we had to build a house to accommodate my progressively disabling disease (thank god for ssdi). Our last home was a tri-level with 4 sets of stairs and 3 elevation changes, with no way to modify. With the build we had to make choices against the standard to make things work for me. Like the microwave had to be on the counter. I also had to have a counter to slide a pot of water to or from the stove, our counter material needed to be laminate, our floors have to have texture, no elevation changes within the home or at entry doors, deck has a 3” step that I can manage and modified stairs to the yard (shorter and longer), we completely redesigned the bathroom from builder plan to have a 3x bigger shower with a 1.5” threshold., controls on right and spray on left- so it could be door free if need be. Widened doorways to accommodate a walker or wheelchair. Biggest thing is to know the level of accessibility. They wanted to lower all my switches, but building for my disability I didn’t want to jump the gun 10-15 years. So we didn’t do wheelchair height stuff yet. And let’s be real…I barely cooked before my disease 😂

When I've told people involved that I need the area under sinks to either be open underneath, just open or curtained off, or with less deep cabinets that sit back a few inches than the sink/counter, you should see the looks. You would think I just beamed in from outer space or did something disgusting right out in public.😂

I can certainly relate to the tap situation (twice!) At my parents house, where the left handed plumber fitted a tap with a single lever on the right hand side. Apart from my brother, we're all right handed and I have to use my weaker left hand to hold the kettle due to the tap being to the right. In my flat, I supplied a much taller tower tap to replace the two short single taps. Their plumber refused to fit it because he "Hadn't got the right pipework or authorisation!" Like at my parents house, I still struggle to fill the kettle. I'm sure your issue with the bin drawers situation can be surmounted eventually, if not already done. The only suggestion I can make is for some sort of curved, floor standing cover (floor standing for maintenance reasons) to conceal the plumbing under the sink. Lovely kitchen gem. I’m not disabled but I actually use an empty punnets to put all my food scraps when I am scraping plates or peeling vegetables etc and then I just put that in the bin once I’m all done

It's so funny that you mention having the sink close to the cook top. My apartment has them on opposite sides...and it's true, we do find a way to get safely back and forth. I lock my oven door so I can use the handle to pull on.

I like how the Oven Door pulls down then gets slid under the Oven. However, you'd Lose a lot of Heat that way, like if you're pulling out a tray of cookies, and putting another tray back in. Here is Canada, we have Ovens where the door opens Sideways (much like a microwave oven). You can also get them spring loaded with a timer, so you can open it and it stays open for 5 to 10 seconds, then closes itself. Much like electric doors to a store that open to let you through, then close a few seconds later.

Not sure I agree with this- no matter how the door swings, heat will escape anyway. Also not sure about the timed doors- again, different disabilities function differently. A person with Motor control issues, might not be able to function with this feature. Some of us have to move slowly in order to make sure that whatever we’re handling stay in the pan/pot/… So we can safely remove it and set it on the counter or whatever.

So many good tips. I'm brainstorming mine at the moment. I'm definitely keen on big drawers instead of cupboards for the bottom storage. Getting things from the back of cupboards and even just putting things away just puts me in really awkward positions from my power chair and apart from being a pain in the butt it also probably increases pain

I discovered the drawers were easier quickly and found some plastic, but heavy duty drawers that I put just outside my kitchen because it's easier than cabinets. I had one cabinet with drawers and use it constantly.

Lovely Gem! You manage so well, I don’t see how the pull down shelf can be accessed without standing up. My OT says I wouldn’t manage these from my chair. It’s frustrating as I’m not able to try these things first. I see your shelf isn’t over loaded xx

Plenty of good ideas, thank you. A big MUST, I think is a pull out Safe Shelf under your oven, heatproof, for basting & transitioning to kitchen. Drawers tend to be much more useable than cupboards - the doors do get in the way. pull-out pantry can be very handy - perhaps the work bench won't be as deep so you can reach storage above. Having the taps to the side, rather than back can be very helpful, as I can't always reach - also watch you don't have to reach through water stream to turn off! Hope you are still loving your kitchen! Just getting ready to remake my side to be accessible for my needs. Cheers!

I'm literally watching this whilst prepping breakfast in a non adapted kitchen. Weirdly a lowered work surface isn't something I crave and I'd really miss all the low down cupboards. I think I have long arms or something! A sink I could roll underneath is the only bit of that I want currently. My biggest issue is the dishwasher, I have a regular size one and watching the video I can see that a smaller one might help. Basically I can't reach all the way across to load it. Like yours it's in a corner, but with the arrangement of everything else, I stash my dirty dishes on the left side when I can only roll beside it from the right side! My biggest problem is taking the plunge on an accessible kitchen is deciding the overall look, I'm in an open plan flat, so the kitchen is on display to all and currently has a breakfast bar, which is quite a popular feature. Also, I have this weird situation of having a flat that is unique and a mirror image to my parents' flat, we're both on the original kitchens, so it's going to be super weird whichever of us goes first on a kitchen replacement! They did their bathroom before I even bought my flat, but I think I might be the one who gets in first with the en suite - currently I literally only use it for going to the toilet in the night. I don't even know if it's possible to make it accessible.

Well, you could always have a saddle stool or something like that available for your walking family members if they feel the lower work heights is too low if working in the kitchen for a longer time, so such things can easily be worked around, especially since the areas are open so you can roll under properly. I’m ambulatory and have no adaptions at home but do have a saddle stool at home in case I need to sit down in the kitchen, it doesn’t work too well though because I can’t roll under at all so I have to sit alongside the stove area

..a rotating cilinder shelf may be useful for bench corner where electric water boiler is..+- 60cm diameter circle plate..maybe 3 rotating plates for more used stuff or spices..

I bought myself a forward facing door air fryer/ toaster oven, as I see you have the toaster at a higher level. If something goes wrong you have to dig into it, not easy. This appliance has made my life so much easier, and it was under a $100 CAD.

Yeah, with the draws I'm absolutely at your side. My best girl friend has draws over and over, her kitchen is a normal one, she's a staneing and going-by-feet-person, not like me in a wheelchair. But she's only 160 cm and I was 176 cm before I had to choose the wheelz. Her kitchen is nearly fine to me, she has got a full line where I can role under . Wonderful! I'd think on the cupboard that goes down. I loved it from first side and looked this part immediatly four times till I got further.

I noticed on Bondi Vet, 6ft5in Dr. Chris has his doorknobs at what seems to be 5ft8in, or the height where most others really would get a black eye from falling into a door knob, even if nobody believes them. But I've seen other tall people have to do the leg split to reach average countertops and tables, making me rarely feel pretty good about being short thinking this world really is built for me afterall.

My dad installed mine though as it was running at over £25K including installation. We shaved 10K off by doing self-installation and it actually turned out better than Wickes could have done it.

THE oven is by NEFF and it is a pretty common brand in the UK. You will get this feature with the slide away door maybe on other brands too. But NEFF is famous for it.

Honestly it really makes me mad seeing someone who works in design for Ikea asking questions like this on the internet when big furniture companies can and should pay people with disabilities for their time speaking on subjects like this, and to take it a step further they should hire disabled designers to make collections like these.

I don't see a point in an accessible kitchen for me because I can't cook. But at the same time I find things are just that little bit of an issue at normal height. Aka the sink. I can hardly turn on the tap. We've set up the kitchen to work for me best we can. Aka everything I need is in the bottom cupboards. But the cooking stuff is up high as hubby makes dinners. If I wanted to cook I'd have to take the hob over to the dining table. Which is an issue. We have an air frier instead of an oven. I can reach it but often burn myself on the metal racks because of its placement. So I avoid it as much as possible. Can use the microwave easy and have a hot cup instead of a kettle so I can make myself s coffee or tea at any time. Just means hubby has to fill it a few times a week.

My kitchen might happen. I currently use a stand alone single hob and was offered a four ring sunken one. Unfortunately, I do not have much space; and they do not come in two rings. So will have to make do with my single hob. If I make pasta, say, will keep pasta in water until other food ready.

Gem, what make and model of wall mounted oven do you have? I've never heard of or seen an oven where the oven door folds down, and slides back into the oven. That oven is simple accessability genius. While the particular kithen renovation from 2007 I'll describe, was not designed or planned as being an accessible kitchen, a miscommunication in its planning caused a mistake, which turned out to be something totally serendipitous. In my intended design, I'd wanted to have a meals nook built into the front most part of the kitchen. The nook table space would have extended forward past the existing front edge of the kitchen area by 2 benchtop depths. I'd wanted to have under and over bench cupboards only as far as the start of the nook table. That was the plan. What happened, was that the kitchen company thought I wanted an L shaped bench, with under bench cupboards on the kitchen side, and a small under bench cupboard on the lounge room side in the corner of the L. The over bench cupboards ran to the corner of the L and finished there. When I saw the finished kitchen, I was aghast. I was shocked at how much of a foul up that area was, in comparison to what I'd described that I'd wanted. I was trying to think of how the heck can I make use of this fouled up design. At that point of time, I did not have a microwave oven. In the pre-Christmas sales for 2009, I would get a microwave oven, and I put it in the corner of the L, to use the benchtop space in front of the microwave, for managing cooked foods. This was the moment of serendipity. That previously annoying and useless benchtop space, became an essential. I could microwave anything, slide it straight out of the microwave and onto the benchtop to cool to safe handling and esting tenperature without worry.

lucky i'm over6ft so i can reach quiet far and high with one arm since i can stand on one leg for a few minutes i can reach one of the highest shelves and furter with a grabbing stick also only right handed i got disabled after rebuilding the house so kitchen was not adopted only prblem is stirring the pan

Before you had it done didn't it seem like the perfect kitchen, then when it's all finnish and gets used you realise it is not as perfect as you thought it would be. The same thing happened to me lol I even got a quote from a joiner to correct the problem they wanted 800 quid for it so I live with how it is now.

Is the height of the countertop the same as the height of the oven when the oven door is open? And if not do you find the difference in height to be hard for you at all?
