As a Computer scientist with some experience in DSP and AI I can tell that the myth of "static sound" is true, the problem is people not knowing what does it mean really and just using this claim to support "fanboys" wars. To make this point clearer, it is true that with Kemper (and as far as I know, also with other profiling devices) you can only have static profiles. However, this claim has to be interpreted in the right way. Modern profilers can learn how to reproduce a given sound quite accurately. However, they are only exposed to the output of the amplifier -> they have no idea of HOW the amplifier behave when its parameters change, how turning the gain knob really impacts the sound for the very specific amplifier. So the current state of the art devices basically learn how to mimic the "listened" sound and then apply generic post processing to it (increase high, lows, gain and so on). And this explains why the more you change the original sound with extra parameters, the more it becomes "unrealistic" if compared to the real amplifier. To sum up: it is TRUE that the Kemper allows only static profiles in the sense that it is not able to model the knob behaviour of that very specific amplifier; it is FALSE that allows only static profiles in the sense that you can not change them at all. Being able also to model the behaviour of knobs and how the sound responds to such changes (in a very specific amplifier) is still an open problem in the research field and also quite complex. For the more curious people, there are actually some techniques that allow to theoretically map also knobs using neural networks, however there are some problems with the feasibility of such approach (it will imply the user to move the knobs at very very very specific positions for each one of them, which results in a basically terrible user experience to profile an amp, and also there are some problems with computational efficiency)

I love the info you've brought to light in this video! So many people have such a skewed vision of what the Kemper actually is and how it works and how Profiles work. The level of tweakability in the Kemper is what makes Profiles usable to people beyond the Pofiler in the first place. It's great that you brought this all to light for more people. And the many things you can tweak when working with Profiles, so far seem to all be things things that the QC lacks. The concept of being "stuck" with a Profile at certain settings doesn't truly apply to the Kemper, but might be actually somewhat true for the QC. After all, the QC only has Gain and 3 band EQ, and that's exactly what uninformed people mistakenly thought Kemper Profiles were like. That was a big criticism that people made without realizing you can tweak a whole bunch of parameters that affect the fundamental tone of the Profile in ways that typical EQ can't, as well as swap out the cab section and experiment with different Cab sections from Profiles or IRs. Without that tweakability, the QC Captures actually are the stripped down and limited version of Profiles that people thought so negatively of before. And it's pretty crazy that such a huge drawback is so overlooked when comparisons are made. I think this info gives a lot of great info for people looking into buying a modeler/Profiler and it makes the comparison a lot clearer. I think all of the stuff you said needed to be said because all the vids and comparisons coming out seem to be so contradictory to the info about the Kemper from before and its a very skewed vision of it being pushed right now. Truth needs to be told. It doesn't make the QC a bad unit. And the QC coming out, especially doesn't make the Kemper any less of a great unit and it still sounds great and feels great to play. I think people need to hear that and at least have some info that comes from a place that isn't just hopping on the hype train for views lol. I dig your honesty! Love your vids and mad props on your masterful playing, my friend! 😀

Good point about varied behavior from a preset. And the idea of seeking a Dumble-esque tone by adding clean tone was new to me! But just to be extra clear, the controls have not been modeled from the amp you've captured; it's not possible to do that without actually varying (jointly!) *all* of the controls on the amp as part of a (hypothetical) all-variables capture. The controls are working in some kind of "generic" manner. So the knobs won't do to the captured tone what your captured amp's knobs would do. You didn't say they would; I'm just trying to be extra-clear about it. I don't own a Kemper, so learning about controls like Clarity, Pure Cabinet, Character, etc., really helped me appreciate the Kemper's capabilities. It's really building a new amp for you, using the captured amp as a departure point. Thanks for clarifying that for me. -Tom PS: I don't know if this is a new (hopefully temporary) YT issue, but I'm seeing a lot more ads on your channel than I used to, and more than on any other channel I watch. Thanks for your video which clarifies many aspects of using the Kemper. Really useful! I believe that the various "first impressions" on Neural DSP and the comparisons that are made between this and the Kemper or other machines are quite wrong. Often, then, they are made by those who, despite having bought a Kemper, for example, have never read a single page of its manual, nor have for simplicity seen the explanatory videos found on the Kemper website. From my direct experience, it is not at all true that a purchased profile cannot be completely modified ... The Kemper allows you to vary all those parts of the profile (bias, tube type, cabinet, definition, clarity, pick strength and so on and so forth) which in the end determine sounds that are very different from the original. Those who complain about the "cumbersome" of the Kemper have perhaps never fully used other machines (ie the first Axes of Fractal) and above all have not understood that in the case of Kemper we are talking about a "profiler" that is a machine that replicates the sound starting amp. Profiles of Michael Britt or Tone Junkie or others are often chosen because they have a higher profiling quality at the base, so the final product is qualitatively better. Despite this, M. Britt himself in the notes to his packs always adds that each profile can be modified to your liking and also provides several suggestions in this regard. In the end, almost 10 years after its release, Kemper is still unmatched for its possibilities of use: it is like carrying around a truck of amplifiers and effects, all often of great quality, enclosed in a "toaster". Perhaps a little dated (but still practical) graphics and displays, free effects updates, huge database of sounds ... at a more than adequate price. Thanks again to Jonathan for his intellectual honesty and his ability to face all comparisons as a professional.

When I got my Kemper in August 2011 there were 35 Profiles total available. So most important thing at that time was experimenting with different cabinets. By February 2012 I had 150 Cabinets including the Tills Cabinets saved on my Kemper. Why, how? When you play a great Profile always save the Cabinet. Like Britt's Dumble 1x12 or Thomas Dills 4x12 Greenbacks. Build up a collection of saved Cabinets. Dam them Kemper’s sure do a lot of “things” 😆 Some lovely playing and tones as always sir! I think you covered most of the main points about how flexible the KPA really is. However, O was surprised that you put so much weight on Clarity but didn’t touch on Definition. Definition is one of the most powerful and underrated controls in the Kemper and is the forst go to control for many people. As for the Pre/Post EQ; its all just taste (and you seem to have really good taste anyway) but I would tend to suggest using it Pre for really dramatic changes like cutting a lot of bass flub or boosting a loot of mids or highs as these tend to alter the distortion character more than the actual “tone” (EQ). Wheres the EQ is very powerful so can be used much more subtly in the Post position. At the end of the day though if it sounds good, it is good 🤘

I don’t know if I’d call it a myth. I have never heard anyone say that you are100% “stuck” with a certain sound on a profile. But from my own experience with my Kemper over the last 7 years, the farther away you get from the original profile, the less convincing it sounds. I absolutely do tweak my profiles and sculpt them to my liking. But more than a few clicks away from default on many controls and it starts to sound a bit funny. I rarely use the Gain knob more than 2-3 numbers in either direction. After that it starts sounding artificial to my ear. But that said, profiles are still not completely static. I do have a Quad Cortex coming. I don’t expect it to be “better” than my Kemper as far as the sound goes. I do expect that I will prefer working on the unit itself as I am very attracted to the UI. If I don’t end up liking the sounds as much as my Kemper I will sell it.

Also, agree that the flexibility on Kemper is pretty overwhelming and excellent - this thing will be around for a long time, and I have absolutely no need or plan to look elsewhere (and I am a hardcore tube guy). I think the biggest thing with Quad Cortex (for me) is the UI, and while the Kemper team has done a fantastic job providing regular firmware updates and a usable editor, This is the weakest area of the system. I don't think they will ever do this... but I believe if they opened up the Kemper API's to 3rd party developers who specialize in this sort of thing, that the UI (both onboard and via the editor) would improve by leaps and bounds. Just my 2 cents.

It takes pedals like a tube amp does. I’ll check out the QC when I can but I don’t think it’s gonna have me selling my Kemper.
@foxmeisteruk3 жыл бұрын
I was always under the impression that the "issue" was not that you can't really tweak the profile, but rather that the amp controls on the Kemper don't necessaily react in the same way as the same controls on the real amp, especially in situations where those controls are interactive on the real amp. That doesn't mean that the Kemper will produce a "bad" tone, when the amp controls are dialled to extremes, just that it may no longer be particularly representative of the original amp.
@johnnathancordy3 жыл бұрын
You (I) read some funny things online! But yes, one of the things I'm reading is that the parameters for controlling a capture are more useful/more tweakable than the Kemper, which just is almost certainly not the case. There's definitely some folks out there saying that you're stuck with whatever a profile sounds like and you can't really tweak it. Also that's definitely true like you say that the accurate thing to say is that the Amp controls are generic/modelled and so are not going to react the same as the real amp - but that's exactly true of the Quad too

This is strange to compare the number of available tunings instead of the ability to reproduce the sound of a real amp. QC is meant for that, to get you the exact sound of your favorite amp without the amp rather than to enable you to fine-tune all sorts of virtual circuitry. This is done by means of a deep learning model unlike in all other modeling gear. QC isn't just another processor. It's the first to employ deep learning and it is revolutionary in this sense. Given input and output signals, neural nets can automatically memorize such transformations that are impossible to comprehend using other techniques. You will see in the near future Kemper/Line6 and others catching up.
@johnnathancordy3 жыл бұрын
There's literally no evidence that has been provided to show that Neural are capable of greater accuracy than the competitors. In fact the Neural stuff struggles with a number of things including elements of clean signal blended in, sag etc.
@gregoryarefev93493 жыл бұрын
@@johnnathancordy You're most likely right about the lack of features (which is rather an unimportant detail imo). You're maybe right about accuracy (I don't own the QC to check that by myself). But the key difference is that the accuracy is no longer dependant on the algorithm. I can't even imagine how much scientific effort was put into "conventional" modelers (even starting from Zoom 505 ;) in order to virtually reproduce and generalize the nature of sound amplification/distortion and propagation through the air inside a cabinet. Those equations might be enormously complex but still, be just man-crafted approximations leaving tons of edge cases uncovered. All this is automated in a neural net. Just train long enough and let it converge and you won't be able to perceive the difference. I can bet Line6 will come up with "revolutionary new" piece of gear very soon (in a year or two). Which will be based on WaveNet (the model that's used in QC).

I wish Kemper would make Sag, Tube Shape, and Tube Bias much more pronounced. They do so little, why bother. Maybe something like zero to extreme. And you get to dial in what you want. I think these parameters in their current state are a waste of space on the unit.

They are like they are in real life in real tube amp, they don't do much, but it still is important.

@@aristocaster I believe you've missed my point. In the real world with a real amp, these parameters are of a set value. As players, we don't know what that is. Since the Kemper offers diversity, why not offer what I have previously stated?

I'll tell you what does sound completely real and it isn't really debatable. Actual tube amps.

As More you tweak more you are away from the Original „amp“! The amp when profiled passed only s Snapshot of its tone. By adding gain/treble/Bass you are Running away from That specific amp you playing.. its not a myth! Its science 🙋♂️

Actually, that’s technically not a “Stratocaster”. Although it shares a very similar shape, if you look at the headstock you can see it’s an 86 Jackson V complete with a Kahler trem.

I think all of these tone-gangs who double down for their team actually all start in the same way, well intentioned seeking out the perfect tone. Only Andy Timmons will be able to unite us all and prevent the future tone wars from destroying us all. Obviously.
