Thing about Item-Tiers: Those numbers did not come from any poll. They are largely subjective from the devs point of view. And, as you noticed, often dont make a bunch of sense.

It seems like most of the item tiers were decided upon before they reworked old items. One of the most egregious is that Holy Water is considered 0, when its rework makes it worthy of a 3 IMO

TMTRAINER is an impressive item mechanically. I can’t begin to comprehend how they programmed it. But it’s awful to play with it. You have no control of your run whatsoever, most items are straight up useless, every other effect is a fart, and you either die without even knowing what killed you or you luck your way into a guaranteed win with an OP effect and never pickup anything else ever.

Im not sure if you are actually asking how they programmed it, but there is a list of triggers (on coin pickup, on damage, etc) and a list of effects (so many effects) and it chooses one from each list for each item, as best i can tell.

@@slin_jim It can do multiple effects though. I've seen as many as 5 from a single item that shot flames, spawned enemies, rerolled consumables on the floor, changed my stats, and spawned familiars. Point being it can't be as simple as pick one trigger and effect.

I like the idea of TMT but it completely destroys your run even when you get good rolls In the challenge I got "every time you're about to get hit, trigger invincibility and holy light" and the rest was just walking to the trophy

I got "when you take damage, use The Nail." Sprinted into enemies and projectiles until the run was over. But my first several attempts consisted of soft-locks and a run that made me physically ill (chest pain and nausea) - an item triggered wavy cap over and over while also slowing me to a crawl. Overall I give TMTRAINER and the challenge a Possibly-life-endangering out of 10.

I think TM Trainer would be a lot more interesting of an item if it did the Binge Eater thing of switching between items, but instead of switching between the normal item you were going to get anyway and a food item, it switches between the normal item and a glitched item. That way, you can still take good items, but if there's an item you don't want to pick up you can "reroll" it into a random effect that might be better (or at least funny to watch). As it is now, TM Trainer is a run-losing item and is not that fun. Turning your normal run into literally one of the challenge runs is a terrible idea.

I've been looking forward to the day NL learns TMTRAINER. Essentially a one time take and then never again type of thing. He will be doubly upset when he one day gets an item from a secret room and it's a glitched item (because T.Eden's Delirium unlock allows a perfectly good item like Skeleton Key or Keeper's Sack to be replaced with a 12 charge spacebar that makes you fart and then kills you)

21:27 normally you can bomb through into it, but if the secret room spawns greed / super greed it opens all the doors, then locks them until he's defeated, then it behaves like an actual locked door to the boss trap room, requiring you to have only 1 hp. If greed doesn't spawn you can bomb in and get the item regardless of hp.

Edmund (and co) must have thought up rotten hearts and seriously nerfed their viability from the original idea of how they worked. It's evident by Yuck Heart being 6 charges for a defense downgrade (1 full heart turns into an unreversable half heart) and only on the 2nd use is it better than holding Guppy's Head. And yet it's 4 stars on a 5 star ranking of items to them. I can only imagine the original design of them was filling half a heart and giving more flies, but now it's always consumed first, should never be taken unless you're already ahead (and still never take on the Womb and beyond) and honestly should not elevate you by much even if you can take them.

You can teleport directly on top of enemies though and do more damage. With car battery, you can teleport there and back, efficiently giving you an insta smite.

When I was playing that randomized challenge, I had 3 games in a row end this way. First, I was just taking damage every time I cleared a room, so I was on a set timer. Next 2 times, I got an item that would just randomly hurt me until I died. It can be fun, but seems like a bad effect to have if you're trying to win.

Yesterday's run was about the worse that happened back then, an infinitely long run with massive amounts of jank and no damage, and he took that in stride. Today's run was just him giving a chance to an item that either does nothing, instantly wins you the run or instantly loses you the run
