On this last tour, Mick Harvey already left the band and Des Hefner played drums. “I wasn’t on the Birthday Party tour,” says Harvey. Mick Harvey decided to call time on the band. Everyone agreed, but then thoughts of money crept in, and a final tour of Australia was proposed. “The great Des Hefner (from Auckland punk band the Scavengers) was on that tour. I stayed in England.” “I found the whole prospect [of the tour] really depressing and refused to go.” It was just an excuse to visit your mum. So the others rang Hefner, who had less than a day to rehearse in Auckland. They only did slow numbers, as Hefner couldn’t play the faster ones and the set was over after seven songs.''
