None of the swordfish were taken out because that their structure was so thin that the AA fire just passed through without detonating, and the swordfish were slow for their time and the German AA fire was built to fire in FRONT of the targeted plane, due to the average speed of planes at that time. So most of the bullets just passed in front of the swordfish, making it hard to land a hit.

To be fair Germany was focused on their airforce, army, and on U-boats, and not on traditional naval power. The Kriegsmarine knew they couldn't possibly hope to compete with the Royal Navy in terms of number of ships and production alone, which is why they went for a convoy raiding and hit and run emphasis. Kriegsmarine doctrine was built around a small fleet, so these statistics make sense, although they should have built way more light ships.

@Hao-fp9mt2 ай бұрын
The tirpitz did more than bismarck since it tied down a significant portion of the allied navy. Trading a ship 1 on 1 is never worth it especially for the Germany navy and it's few capital ships. But the Tirpitz single handedly tied down allied naval assets, and scattered convoy like the PQ-17, which the resources alone in that convoy that was sunk was worth more than the Tirpitz. After the Tirpitz was destroyed, the Royal navy transferred a significant portion of their navy to the eastern fleet to help aid the fight against Japan.

Just a note on the pronounciation of "Prinz Eugen": Prince Eugene of Savoy (François-Eugène de Savoie) was an Austrian military commander and statesman of francophone origin. Hence, the name is prounced in French with a bit of Viennese flavor: While the German name "Eugen" has the emphasis on the first syllable, Prinz Eugen has no emphasis on the first one, but all on the second one, which is also rather long and maybe even a notch higher in pitch ("Eu'geeen"). (Prouncing it like the German name is a common misconception, but rather rude.)
@noland656 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Prinz Eugen wasn't only exceptionally successful, but also gay, which hadn't been much of a secret. The Kriegsmarine naming one of the major ships after him is rather remarkable - or they simply didn't know what they were doing. ("We really should name a ship after a famous Austrian to please them, best their most famous military commander. What's he called, Eugen? A prince, too? Sounds great. What, he was gay? Only the 2nd wave after a bit was able to seal its fate. Meanwhile smelly Bismarck was crippled by a couple of planes that were so primitive, the British’s nicknames for said plane all basically made fun of how it was 90% wire and looked like it was from WW1.

The uboat war is much the same. For example the germans created at a large expense a torpedo that homed in on sound, the allies countered it with pipes with holes in them dragged behind the ship to make noise and confuse the torpedo. Germany just did not get that super weapons that are rushed out before they are ready don’t work. Edit: Iron down in the replies pointed out that they did fix these issues later on Edit2:You know thinking about it today I was way to hard on the torpedo, at least it worked unlike the early war MK14 US torpedo. A torpedo so bad that a man in a rowboat armed with nothing but a satchel charge would have been more effective. FYI the torpedo had a terrible fuse that would either go off mid run or fail to go off at all. One report was that a US sub USS Pompano fired six torpedoes at a IJN CV, three exploded on run to the cv and the other three where duds. THIS WAS STILL IN 1943, that torpedo was the worst weapon of the war.
@Schnittertm16 жыл бұрын
They didn't really have the luxury to test stuff until it worked like the US could. There are many things that, for example, the M4 Sherman could be faulted, but it was one of, if not the most reliable tank in WW2. That was in part due to it being tested until it was ready for large scale introduction.
@Jamie-kg8ig6 жыл бұрын
The US also had the luxury of many different climates and 2 oceans to test stuff in.
@IronPhysik6 жыл бұрын
uhm, good that the germans actually where able to fix that issue of the torps in the T9 "Zaunkönig II" germany had 3 homing torpedoes in WW2: T4 G7ES "Falke" T5 G7ES "Zaunkönig" T9 G7ES "Zaunkönig 2" only the Falke (Falcon) and early Zaunkönig versons where affected by that decoy, the later models operated on a different frequency.
@lordhoth44436 жыл бұрын
Iron_Physik Good point, though it would be interesting to see how much in the way of resources they used in developing it. From what I understand it was supposed to be used to sink the escorts so that the convoy could be attacked with the deck gun since that was far more effective. However I could be wrong on that. Do you have any information since you seem to have more information than me? I freely admit that im not an expert on this
@IronPhysik6 жыл бұрын
well, a good page for naval weapons is this "navweaps" here the link to german WW2 torps: www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTGER_WWII.php "T5 Zaunkönig 1 (wren) Known as GNAT to the British. For use against convoy escorts. Designed to home in on cavitation noise of around 24.5 kHz which was equivalent to propellers on an escort traveling at 10 to 18 knots. First successful combat use in September 1943." so what the germans did is to change the frequency that the torpedo guides on, so the decoy (called foxer) was less effective also the guiding kit was more accurate on this torpedo.

I will say that the war of the Atlantic is a very downplayed part of the Second World War. Churchill himself said that he was far more worried about the war of the Atlantic than the ever was about the Battle of Britain and it’s understandable. By all means, the Germans had very good reasons to rely on the Bismarck. The Graf Spree had already proved that surface raiding was very deadly to the British shipping and if it weren’t for the US entering the war (god that was hard for me to say) and the US navy helping take down the U-Boat menace then the British could have very well been knocked out of the fight for much longer. Not to mention that one of the main reasons the commandos were introduced in the first place was to take out the French dry dock St. Nazire, the only place in western France that could repair the Tirpitz.
@22steve51506 жыл бұрын
No, it was stupid. Throwing battleship resources into a couple of commerce raiders is utterly fucking stupid, with each of these ships needing to sink dozens, maybe 50 or 60 merchant ships per year to even come close to justify the cost to build and run them.
@nathankingham12486 жыл бұрын
22steve5150 if a u-boat Wolfpack could sink upwards of 100s of convoys in a single month then imagine what a couple of battleships could do? Especially considering that destroyers and corvettes were the biggest warships that defended them.
@jackofshadows85386 жыл бұрын
Nathan Kingham I know. Those poor bloody Corvettes. Have you SEEN how small they were? The bloody crew had to sleep in a covered awning fore of the ship. They were mostly exposed to the elements for much of the voyage. Their best use was to keep Uboats under the water rather than allowing them to surface and save torpedoes by using the Flak cannon on the deck to destroy Merchantmen. Even many of the Destroyer Escorts were unarmoured with the barest minimum of ASW equipment and a handful of depth charges and 5 inch cannons [though, it is easy to forget how large a 5 inch cannon is when you compare it to the light, medium and heavy guns of land equivalents.. a 5inch gun was almost a Heavy land artillery cannon!]
@nathankingham12486 жыл бұрын
Jack of Shadows the Bismarck was incredibly dangerous. If the Graf Spee (a german heavy cruiser) was such a danger to allied shipping that it resulted in 3 British cruisers being sent to deal with it imagine the effect the Bismarck could have done. It could have maybe changed the course of the war.
@22steve51506 жыл бұрын
Convoys were also protected by aircraft, and they would be increasingly protected by more and more aircraft as the war went on. Battleships are very large and can be detected by radar from a long ways off, they can be detected by spotter aircraft when over a hundred miles from the convoy, allowing convoys to easily change direction to avoid the battleship or vector in groups of escorts and aircraft to fight it. They use a lot more fuel than submarines, the Bismark class specifically did not have the greatest steaming range, they require a lot more maintenance, both at sea and in port (increased downtime between sorties), there were only a handful of repair facilities that could handle a Bismark class ship making it easier to predict where a damaged Bismark class ship was heading so it could be ambushed, and by their very nature they sustain battle damage when fighting, which requires repairs when they get back to port (meaning even more downtime between sorties). Also, destroyers charged battleships and heavy cruisers quite a few times in the war and often got away after putting a few torpedoes into the bigger ships, and the same would almost certainly happen here as the allies could literally swarm dozens of torpedo ladden destroyers, destroyer escorts, and light cruisers at any German battleship and the meager few escorts they could afford to have for the battleship. Germany had few ports that could work on these ships, they had no air cover in the Atlantic, they had few suitable escorts, and they had much inferior recon/spotting ability in the Atlantic. Huge surface warships acting as surface raiders was never going to be a winning strategy for Germany, and this was obvious long before the war started. Stealth was far and away their best bet, and that means subs, more subs, and yet more subs, plus any unneeded small to medium size surface merchant ships that could be modified into surface raiders, relying on disguise (looking like other merchant ships and having multiple flags to fly and english speaking radio operators to impersonate being a UK, Canadian, or US based merchantman if challenged to identify themselves on radio) to avoid destruction as long as possible by the numerically far superior Royal Navy.
