As a brand new nail tech, this was so helpful, thank you! A full set for me takes 2 hours, and I did a fill (with basic nail art) in 1.5 hours last week and was SO proud of myself! It's been something that has worried me so much, and it's good to know it's "normal" to take longer in the beginning.

Yeees. I'm a new tech as well and I was so stressed out about time until I saw this video saying that it's OK not to be super fast right now. My instructor up until I graduated would say "you're killing me" when I would take 2 hours on a full set (including gel polish), but it's a whole lot better than the 3 1/2 hours it took me to do a full set the first time I ever did one.

As a nail enthusiast who loves gel polish, it took me three 2.5 hours to do a child's manicure in the beginning because I thought I needed to be perfect. I was sadly mistaken. She would've loved them either way just because she had coloured lines and dots. Lol. I took my time to prep each finger which took forever. Now that I no longer soak nails in water, my time cut down tremendously!!. Practice makes perfect. Don't be afraid of trial and error. These two are the best why to learn. Thanks H & Tracey!!!

Sculpting has cut down my time when I am doing full sets. I don't mess with glue or measuring tips and I love it. I think just as long as you are charging what you are worth then speed might not be a huge factor. Pedicures bring me a lot of money and there are differences in the pedicures but they all take me about 45 min to an hour the most. There are some nail art that I spend quite a bit of time on and that's ok too just as long as you are charging for it. If you are lucky enough to have clients that will sit with you and let you do whatever you want, most likely they also don't mind paying. I pick and choose on what I want to spend my time doing on my clients.

Great topic. I like many others who have commented am a new tech. I worry constantly about my time. Fills take me on average 2 hours and full sets about 2.5. It's just like starting as a cosmetologist. It's a trade, a skill that you develop over time. You always have to keep learning, honing, and adding onto your skills. Speed is one of those skills. When I first started, I was very very slow. However, I was lucky enough to have employers who were good about education and family/friends who regularly let me do their hair. I don't care if you're doing it for 10 years or 1 day, you should never stop learning and honing those skills. Speed was one of those things that did get better over time and I picked up speed techniques as I went. Questions are important. Keep asking questions and watch other people work. Your speed comes once you are extremely comfortable with all the processes that you do, like Tracy said, once you're completely proficient. One thing I know a lot of professionals in hair miss is that they need to keep practicing as well. Not just in the salon because you may or may not use all your techniques you've been learning. Finding ways to use all of them is great in salon but it's hard to use them all in one day every day and this will also help your time. It took me a lot of time to be able to do a 15 minute hair cut. Also, if you are just starting, you have to give yourself time to figure out your favorite tools and products. You'll be trying lots of new and different things. That also takes time away from working on your time. Lol. You can only do so much at a time. Patience with yourself on building yourself up is important because success takes time. Skills and quality first then time. I feel all these things are applicable to nails as well.

Im new (taking my exam next month) so I do practise clients atm and I go out to clients. A lady calls me up asking if I can do gel babyboomers and we talk about time for the appointment. She then asks me how long it takes. Now keep in mind I have to set up, do her nails, pack up. I dont know how her nails look, I dont know how long she wants them and she wants to have a build gel babyboomer (I work with forms). I told her Id set aside 3 hours for her. She laughs and told me she didnt have that time. I dont think that is a bad time for a beginner to be honest.

Thanks guys and I deff will, I dont want to rush my work only to have a client walk out the door with shitty work. Its a balance act, I know speed is important as Stacy says due to earning potential. But also I cant compare with a nailtech that has 2, 5, 10, 20 years of experience. Also I go to peoples homes so I have to ad extra time for the setting up and packing down, not to mention the fidgety with clients increase when you are in their home. Their kid want attention, they drink, eat, smoke, talk on the phone etc etc and that ads on to the time. There are days Id kill for a salon booth ;)

it took me 5h to do an acrylic set at the beginning. when i go out to do a client i put in 30min travel 15min set up on both side of the appointment. so that right there is extra time when you are a mobile tech and i can't put in as many clients as a salon. don't for get to change for fuel. also i think people need to be more understanding. after i had finished my schooling i am changing people for the product and not time but so many people said for get it. product is not cheep.

Hi guys, firstly thank you for these brilliant videos, I always look out for them each week & have learnt a lot. Secondly, I don't know how some of your guest speakers pro techs can fit up to 10 clients in a day. What hours do they work to do that? I operate my salon from home & can fit up to 5 clients if I'm doing full sets from 9:00 till say 7:00/7:30 with minor breaks in between each client, allowing for clean up & reset for every person of course. It'd be a different story if the bookings for the day are various ones from full sets, to infills or just repairs or incorporating other services - this plays a major part in the volume that is realistically possible to do. I also provide other beauty services so sometimes a client will be booked in for her nails, possibly a pedi or gel toes & pedi or some waxing etc, it all impacts on the volume of clients you can possibly do in one day.

I've been doing nails in a salon for almost 4 years and I still have a hard time doing a fill (with gel polish) in under 2 hours :( unless they are really short then then shaping doesn't take me as long. Stephanie Guida great question... we will do a live vid with tracey doing a set...
@tinasnailsandbeauty6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, I've been in the industry for just over 10 yrs now & it still takes me approx 1-1.5 hrs to do an infill & top with gel polish, from debulking, prepping, application & finish. Same with sculpted full sets, sometimes they can take 1.5-2hrs especially if it's a client coming for their first time, I allow a little extra time to consult with them & answer their queries or concerns etc, of course as I'm working on them so that we're both on the same page. I can't cut corners to speed up the service, and I can't do "that'll do nails" - I always try my best, it's not magazine material but personally, I feel if I do a really good job on them, then word gets around rather than the opposite. :) xx

If thecustomer is coming in like they should they shouldn't need a full manicure for a backfill. The most shaping that should be done is shortened by a few millimetres and debulked and blended at the cuticle unless of course they want to change their shape completely which is very rare for me. Utilize your efile to the fullest from rebalancing to debulking and blending and gel polish removal. Btw Tracey's is 30 but 45 min or an hour is still decent for a backfill and charge for the service. If you are charging less it shouldn't be much less. Maybe $5 or if your generous $10!
@ninibaby6666 жыл бұрын
Lela Robinson my clients usually come back every 3-4 weeks, which is normal I think. I mispoke when I said manicure, I meant cuticle work specifically. I know I spend way too much time on that but I'm not sure how I can get the same result quicker.

Thank you so much for always posting the good stuff! I’ve been working full time as a nail tech since February and it’s still taking me the same amount of time to do a fill as it does to do a full set. 🤭 I’m allergic to monomer so all I do is hard and soak off gel usually with gel polish. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m having a hard time getting my clients to come in during that 2-3 week window. Most of them come once a month...for the most part, there is minimal lifting but I have to totally reshape and rebalance the nails so the prep seems to take forever. Any tips on how to speed that up?
@youngnailsinc6 жыл бұрын
When your clients are going so long in between fills, you are having to do a complete re-balance. Do you wait to reshape the nail till the end of the service ?
@MichellsAdventures6 жыл бұрын
YoungNailsInc Thanks for replying! I usually start with clipping off the extra length, then I roll back the cuticle, then I use my carbide bit and remove the old gel polish and take down the old stress area. After that, I do a rough reshape then I remove the shine from the regrowth area with a sanding band, dust off, swipe and protein bond. I feel like that process takes me longer than it does to prep and apply forms for a whole new set. Then I do the actual fill, finish file, swipe, protein bond again and polish. It takes me around 2 hours total for short nails and 2.5 hours for medium/long Nails (sometimes a bit longer if they’ve got broken nails or a few with some lifting or discoloration) and I almost always apply gel polish. I’m thinking that I’ve gotta be doing something in the wrong order...🤔

Hi I am a new nail tech as of this year the problem I still have his lifting on at least 1 to 2 fingers per hand my time I don’t think it is too bad I can get done with a full set in two hours or less the only thing that slows me down is the drying of regular nail polish and I wish I knew where I could get a dryer they would dry regular nail polish quickly
@Tata-iu3fy6 жыл бұрын
Try working on doing a really good thorough prep. Also when I was working on not getting lifting I made sure I didn't get and on my skin. Even the slightest bit on the skin can cause lifting. The structure of the nail can play a role in lifting as well, if the structure is not right when you go to file it can cause lifting. Just keep trying and it will show in your work.

I don't do nails for a living but I do do them for a little extra cash. It takes me about 3 hours to do a full gel sculpted set polished only on my own nails because I struggle with my non dominant hand. For my clients, depending on what the service is, it'll take me anywhere from 1 - 2 hours. If I am feeling lazy and I go to a salon, I want quick service, no chatting, but I want my nails to look bomb. If I notice the tech is rushing or talkative (on the cellphone ) or on IG and is not paying attention or the person's mood is not good that day, I don't want my nails done by that person. Most often than not when the aforementioned happens they rush, skip steps, handle you aggressively and do sloppy work. When I call them on it, they become upset and don't want to do my nails. I am not rude and disrespectful to them, I just want my nails done properly and I say that. This is why I started doing my own nails. Time is money but good work is money also. Don't do good work and you'll lose your clients. I've walked out of many salons never to return. I'd rather slow and good rather than quick and sloppy. Where is the balance?
@traceyreierson51666 жыл бұрын
April McGeorge Quick doesn’t has to mean sloppy. My client is the most important person while I am working on them... no calls.. no text and no other client sitting with us talking... complete focus on them. That way they feel special (because they are) and I am able to work fast.

April McGeorge This is me EXACTLY. After years of mediocre nails from non-standard salons, I started doing my own. Six years later I went to school and became licensed. We are blessed in that we don’t do nails for a living. I refuse to rush and sacrifice quality. When I do your nails that’s *my* name on your hands. But I understand and feel for Techs for whom this is their bread and butter. It’s a dilemma.

Time is money...!! This ain’t a hobby...!! it is my living its what puts food in my Childs mouth pays for the roof over my head etc,I’m a professional speed is very important this is why I’m getting fed up Of social media especially Instagram three hour sets And clients thinking it can be done within an hour or so but don’t wanna pay for 3 hrs ,it’s only a bit of pigment powder, it’s only. Couple of stamps ,foils ,glitter fade,it’s only a stiletto shape(length and filing) it only an ombré ,client=is that still £25-£30 ....?🙈nah it ain’t lol ...client= ahh that’s okay I won’t get it then...??Its like walking into to a restaurant and asking for all the extra sides and not wanting to pay for it...?? And that’s not to mention the time it takes them to pick the colours and the art then look through social media whilst they change there mind because it not the same colour ( more photo editing colour changes saturation cheers social media even when it’s the same brand and colour you changed it in photo editing )Clients have no idea and can take up to an hour Messing and being picky there’s a limit, trust me when it gets like that your saked you’re not getting rebooked ,you lost me time so valuable, plus money ,Back in the day people did not bring in social media pictures they let me do my job what I was good at what I had trained in what I had practised with that’s when my speed was up there,And then some clients not all of course once they’ve picked all this stuff of the social media and fussed about over all the nails length shape etc just like the picture ,turn out to be energy vampires and Or think it’s a therapy session I’m your nail tech here to do your nails Because you can’t and or won’t i’m not your therapist,I’m not your mate,I don’t wanna go out with you after for drinks,I wanna be paid and enjoy my time after nails ,of course a lot of the time your client lol do become your friends and you do have a great relationship and chitchat but this is what happens when one client ruins your day it ruins everyone’s day sometimes your week and working nail tech will defo relate and knows what I’m talking about, it’s the best job but it can also be the hardest job from a few bad apples,a client base that you have built up is a necessity a great relationship with clients that get you pumped and you look forward to doing there nails a seeing them,these clients enhance my day whilst enhancing their nails win win these are the days and the clients I do not class as work and make me love my career/ profession.Again guys very good video loving the chitchat and the reality of what our world is xx

Before I found my Mimi, I've gone to other tech that talk to each other in their native language and wasn't comfortable... I will go see her early if I know she is going out of town just so I don't have to cheat on her..☺
