I’m sure you get suggestions a lot, but since you already opened up the Congo as an option you should check out the J’ba Fofi, aka the Congolese giant spider. It’s said to be a gigantic arachnid with a total radius of 5 feet, a rear strangely resembling a human skull, and pretty well documented behavior by locals such as hunting habits. The most interesting, in my opinion, is the fact that it is said that the creature used to be much more common but has dwindled in encounters (or perhaps even extinction) due to human involvement. At the very least, it’s my favorite Congo cryptid and even if you never see this I had to give it a try

Still posting for the Oklahoma octopus
@peterstoric65608 күн бұрын
@@HeirofAzaran I was actually thinking it would be a type of colosal hermit crab myself. Especially considering that the coconut crab reaches sizes similar to the Congolese spider anyway and using the skulls of prey as a shell would fit in nicely. Plus, crustaceans already have a history of looking spider like in some areas so it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. All that would really be needed is a venomous means of attack (maybe such as a modified claw like a centipede) and a way to produce webbing as described in their hunting tactics

Regarding the mysterious organs, I think Thought Potato is foreshadowing a "true dragon" video. The basic Bauplan of the Snallygaster would explain the classical 4 legs + wings description - as the video points out. And while these organs may have a different function for the Snallygaster, they could be used to explain a dragon producing "fire" (or some other chemical reaction that gave rise to the legends)
@nigel79767 күн бұрын

Hollow bones and Air sacks like dinos had, plus those rib wings and some form of propulsion likely tied to those glands could be a good way to explain the flight without true wings, i'm interested to see how Thought Potato aproaches this one.
@spanda76316 күн бұрын
I thought the extra organ helped it regulate heat since snallygaster seems close to a reptile and reptiles normally can't survive in higher altitudes with cold temperatures since they are cold blooded but yeah the foreshadowing it as a "true dragon" makes sense

The gliding lizard styled wings are one of my favorite explanations for hexipodal dragons. Glad to see someone use them. One of my "spec evo" designs has them have the babies having glanding wings earlie one with some clades developing them further into fully functional wings.

That's interesting! I like to do speculative creatures as well. For the Snallygaster I thought up of a basal caecilian, or caecilian relative, that had developed a mode of gliding/flight and their descendents in doing so develop beaks, in order to have tentacles and a beak at the same time. Though maybe it's just the modern caecilians with tentacles, not sure. But what are "glanding wings"?

What if the agropelter of America, the empusas of Greece and the tikbalang of the Philipines were highly specialized and modified chalicotheres instead of primates? Empusas being specialized haemovores using mimicry to prey on humans, tikbalang being carnivorous bipedal equines, and the agropelter appearing to have tentacles since the structure of the limb includes modifications to the wrist bones and elongated fused digits as well as gibbon-like shoulder and elbow adaptation. Each with modified three clawed hands and hooved hindlimbs.
@solomen40768 күн бұрын
I was also thinking it could also be a good explanation for deer woman and sheepsquatch as different offshoots... Deer woman especially matches the legend of the empusas as hooved bipedal predators that can mimic humans... usually in dark settings. The hooves always give away the deception though. Ghuuls are also similar albeit scavengers instead of outright predators...

I live in Yadkin County NC, along the Yadkin River where the Appalachian mountains stop at. And there was a small dragon who lived on this cursed old plantation property near where my dad bought a couple acres at. The first time he showed himself to me, I was like 7 or 8 years old, and was walking home after hoeing a tobacco field the farmer left me in by myself to weed. I thought it was just a bush at first...then the dragons texture changed, and he spoke telepathically to me. Sent me visions and images of his parents flying around in space. He didn't have wings yet when I was a kid. About a decade ago was the last time I saw him. Dragons can change their temperature, texture and blend in...like leaf insects and octopii. He was starting to grow wings last time I saw him too...said he was going to the Amazon because Americans hunt dragons, kill them and them mount their corpses up in their underground lairs. There's alot of dragons on earth too...and if they don't want to be found or seen, then you'll never see or find one.

IRL mythical creature ideas: QILIN: A specialist crocodilian with long legs for prolonged chasing beyond the water, appearing like the extinct Kaprosuchus, with more extravagant head crests for courtship. UMIBŌZU: A titanic cousin of Sirenus Horridus, living in the deep waters around Japan, with deeper and more sophisticated eye markings for a more convincing human facade, distracting the prey while it’s long fin-like arms grasp it before drowning the prey, or tearing it apart with it’s teeth. Not as intelligent as their relatives, something as simple as a confusing object such as a bottomless barrel or container would grant enough time for escape. JÖRMUNGANDR: while native to northern seas near Iceland and the highlands this immense serpent has found itself a home in other north places, such as Alaska and parts of Canada. A massive relative of normally puny sea snakes this titan is able to dive into the deep sea to hunt, a collapsible rib cage letting it feed on almost anything it finds. KAPPA: a large frog species with indentations on it’s head and back that fill with water for tadpoles. CIPACTLI: a derived omnivorous crocodile that eats anything, with special pigmentation on it’s joints to give the illusion of other sets of jaws to ward off competing predators. Please try one of these I need an Umibōzu siren relative please it’s my favourite mythical creature ever!

If you're doing Appalachian cryptids, how about the Wampus Cat, or the Smoke Wolf? Either way, I thoroughly enjoy your approach to these creatures, and look forward to your next upload ❤

Throwing this out there, for a future video, a neat idea might be to examine the Martians from H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, from the POV of a biologist doing an autopsy.

I love your videos. It doesn’t matter how well known the monsters or mythical creatures are. If you make a video about them, I’ll watch it.

Three monsters in a week? That’s crazy. Really dig this design. The Snallygaster makes for some really cool designs due to how many traits it has. I love Fallout’s for example, which is a great example of how weird FEV can be rather than just Ogres.

Have you thought of adding the biology of the Grafton Monster also from the Appalachian Mountain region ? It would be cool to see what you could do with an idea like that

I grew up on snallygaster stories. Parents used it something like the boogeyman to scare kids into line, mostly about being out at night.
