The BIZARRE DRAMA Between CBS and the Dallas Cowboys (1979)

Did you know that an NFL game will typically run three hours? Well, for some inexplicable reason, CBS did not realize this, and in 1979, they paid a pretty hefty price for it. In 1979, CBS decided to air a doubleheader that was so stupid that Dallas Cowboys fans in Wichita Falls, Texas, just outside of Dallas, would be unable to watch their team play against the Minnesota Vikings in the game's entirety. This is the story behind the drama and the controversial scheduling decision on CBS' part

The irony is that CBS was so fixated on Dallas in that era, it became known as the Cowboys Broadcasting System. They seemed to be the 4 pm game whenever CBS had the doubleheader, even if they were playing a clearly inferior opponent. Pat Summerall seemed to spend most of his time in the Metroplex, and ended up moving there full-time. It’s stunning that CBS got in anybody’s way of watching the Cowboys-especially in North Texas of all places.

@@matthewdaley746 I don't see what playoff losses really had to do with moving 6 years later. I would think missing the playoffs for 6 straight years would have more to do with moving than making the playoffs and losing. Lots of teams had playoff droughts in the '70s, considering how dominated the decade was by the Steelers, Raiders, Vikings, Cowboys, and Rams. You didn't see the Bears, Lions, Packers, Chargers, Browns, Bengals, Bills, et al moving. The Colts had more success than all of those teams despite their loony-toon owner.

In 2001, I went to a 49ers-Dolphins game in December with a 1:07 pacific start. Normally with November and December games, it was near dark by the time we got to our car and pitch dark by the time we got home (which was about a 60-90 minute drive, depending on traffic). This game was quick enough that it was still light out for most of the drive home. It wouldn't surprise me if you told me that no NFL game since then has been faster. Just looked, it was 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Here’s an idea for a future video: In Week 13 1970, CBS had a Saturday national telecast of Dallas at Cleveland-but it couldn’t be aired **in Dallas** because there was a college football game in Arlington Stadium (future home of the Rangers), and the law prohibited airing NFL games within a 75-mile radius of a college game. Worse still, the same thing happened in Week 13 1971, when a Saturday Dolphins at Colts national telecast on NBC was blacked out **in Miami.** Compounding that stupidity, the game was originally scheduled for Miami, with the teams’ Week 10 meeting at Baltimore, until the NFL and the Dolphins were reminded that **the Orange Bowl was already booked for a college game that day.** Perhaps the NFL assumed it could just bulldoze the HBCUs involved in that game into moving it, but they refused, so the sites for the Colts-Dolphins games were flipped. Those teams ended up playing in the AFC Championship at Miami-their 3rd meeting of the season, with zero being televised in Miami.

The NFL finally got wise in 1982 and got rid of the 2:00 ET starts for games (except Baltimore which had to start their home game at no earlier than 2:00 ET because of since-repealed blue laws). However, many Central Time Zone games prior to 1982 were scheduled to kick off at Noon CT to stay within the three hour window of the early games, particularly if that game was being aired in a large portion of the Eastern Time Zone (not sure if this was the case for Cardinals vs. Oilers). When the Colts moved to Indianapolis, that ended any 2:00 ET starts for games. Interestingly enough, the Seahawks at 49ers game in San Francisco that week was permitted to kick off at 2:00 PT because it was only going to be broadcast in select markets in the Pacific Time Zone.

NBC was scheduled to air Game 5 of the NLCS on Sunday at 1 pm ET/10 am PT, so scheduling Seattle-SF for 2 pm PT significantly reduced the chances of the baseball game running into the football game. This ended up being a non-issue when Pittsburgh swept Cincinnati in the NLCS in 3 games. It was the only time I recall a Sunday regular season regional game starting at 5 pm ET since the merger.

These were the same CBS execs who tape delayed the NBA Finals in those days too. So I'd say this was par for the course for them.
@altfactor
@altfactor 2 жыл бұрын
Weeknight games of the NBA finals were out on tape delay, but they did air the games live in the two cities whose teams were playing As an example, Games 1, 2, and 5 of the 1971 NBA finals between Boston and Houston (played on weeknights) were shown live in those two cities, but on a 3-1/2 hour delay in the rest of the Eastern and Central time zones, a 4-1/2 hour delay in the Mountain time zone, and a whopping 6-1/2 hour delay on the West Coast (Games 3 and 4 were on Saturday and Sunday afternoons respectively, and did air live across the network. If my memory serves me correct, Game 6 in Houston was shown live throughout the network because of complaints CBS got concerning the delayed telecasts if Games 1, 2, and 5. But even still, CBS insisted on the 10:05 P.M. EDT tip off (9:05 local in Houston) to minimize damage to have it's prime-time ratings, only one hour of prime-time (in the East) would be affected. In 1981, the NBA was nowhere near as popular as it us today. In fact, there was legitimate speculation that when CBS's contract to carry the NBA ended that the league might lose national TV coverage. But then came Bird and Magic, followed by Michael.
@altfactor
@altfactor 2 жыл бұрын
Typo! I meant the 1981 finals.
@WaltGekko
@WaltGekko 2 жыл бұрын
The tape delay of the NBA Finals in 1981 had to do with the fact I believe a year earlier in 1980, Nielsen had changed around the "sweeps" periods due to the growth of the NCAA Tournament causing NBC (which had the NCAA Tournament prior to 1982) to air those more in full and coupled with local pre-emptions for conference and NCAA Tournament games during March (this was long before cable took over a lot of that) led to what had been the "March Sweeps" being abolished and replaced by new "sweeps" period in February and May (the "sweeps" were in March, July and November prior to 1980 I believe, the latter two still exist). The station managers of CBS affiliates in a lot of cities said they would not show NBA playoff games in prime time because they were hurting the ratings for late local news and there was fear of losing viewers to other stations. That was why the only live games on CBS were those that started at 11:30 PM ET (even if it meant in Phoenix and Denver a game started at 9:30 PM local time). The NBA realized this and a year later pushed the start of the season back three weeks so the Finals would occur after the "May Sweeps" ended.
@WaltGekko
@WaltGekko 2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewdaley746 That is true, but it was more a by-product of a change in the "sweeps" periods by Nielsen as what had been the "March Sweeps" were moved up to February because of the growth of college basketball (to where network affiliates often pre-empted regular programming for conference and NCAA Tournament games as NBC, which had the tournament prior to 1982 didn't air nearly as many games as is done now). A new "sweeps" period was created in May because otherwise, the next such period was not until July (which is still a "sweeps" month albeit the least important). CBS affiliates were refusing to air NBA playoff games, including the finals in prime time fearing losing viewers to other stations, especially for late local news. That was why that happened and why the NBA in 1981-'82 moved back the regular season three weeks to remedy this.

The distance was the issue, and still is today. Almost 150 miles as being "just outside" is a bit of a stretch. Some perspective, living in a suburb of Indianapolis, I am about 100 miles from Cincinnati. Let's say the Colts are scheduled on Monday night, or played on the Thursday night prior, or have a bye week, but the Bengals may be playing the Steelers. In Indy, we may not get the Bengals game, even though we are relatively close (closer than Wichita Falls to Dallas). The flip side of this is that the NFL learned from it's mistake about staggered scheduling. Remember, it was just several years before this that home games were blacked out no matter what, even if the game was sold out!! So, it seemed that television was still a bit of a learning curve in the 70's for the league

As you note, 1 pm Central Time starts were still a thing in 1979. But they were gradually becoming less of a thing before being eliminated by 1984 (and everywhere except Baltimore by 1982). There wasn’t much of a problem with 1 CT starts if the network showing that game didn’t have the doubleheader. But it sucked when they did, as you not only were shorted on Game 2, but you also got one hour less of football overall. Because of this, 1 pm CT games were increasingly less common on networks with doubleheaders. A great example was Week 14 1977. NBC had the DH, with two critical games that would help decide divisional races-Bengals-Oilers and Patriots-Colts. Both would’ve been 2 ET/1 CT starts in normal circumstances (Denver-Dallas was the anticipated 4 ET featured game but became a surprisingly meaningless Super Bowl preview). Due to the stakes and Baltimore’s blue law, Cincinnati-Houston started at noon CT and NE-Baltimore at 4 ET. That makes it mystifying that Cardinals-Oilers started at 1 CT rather than noon CT. I’m just not sure who’s most responsible for that particular aspect of this fiasco-CBS, the NFL, or even the Oilers (as fans attending the game presumably preferred a 1 pm start to a noon start). CBS had no real choice but to air Washington-Philadelphia (or another noon CT game) in Dallas, because they were contractually required to start airing Cowboys-Vikings at 3 CT no matter what, which probably would’ve meant cutting away from Cardinals-Oilers in the 3rd quarter. But Wichita Falls is a secondary market, so the NFL and CBS took the greedy, stupid route.

I actually officiated a high school game that finished under 2 hours in Indiana. Game started at 7:30 pm and it was raining with a slick and muddy field. One team ran a spread, while the other ran a wing T offense up the middle each play. The spread only did short pass not more than 5 yards. The wing T team won 34-14 I believe. It also helped that they shortened halftime by 3 minutes due to the marching band not performing.

I don't have a list of 1979 television markets, but I'm fairly confident that DFW was a top 10 television market. Having said that, I'll use the 2021 television markets instead. DFW is currently a number 5 television market, while Houston is the number 8 television market. The top 25 television markets make up 50% of the television households. Wichita Falls-Lawton is the #149 television market, which is in the bottom 5% of television household. Green Bay could spike the ball and still have more television households than Wichita Falls. In addition, Wichita Falls is in the western half of the United States which has 20% of the US population. So, yeah, the affiliates are at the mercy of the networks.

I'm not defending CBS. The thing is those rights to the games are sold to the networks under the stipulations of the contracts. It is these NFL contracts that define a "market"! I don't know the specifics of that day, but if that first game was a national game and the Dallas game was not then the CBS affiliate in Witcha Falls might well have had to follow that contract. Again, I am not attempting to defend anybody! Does anybody remember how an NFL game got blacked out in their home market if the game did not sell so many tickets? I do! I suggest that before attacking CBS as stupid to see if you can get the rules about coverage that were part of that contract!

Not so bad. In the 70's there was an important game between the Steelers and the Raiders. It had playoff implications. And the game was advertised all week long. Watch this game, don't miss this important game. You saw it all week long. It was an early game 11:00AM in Phoenix. Even before the game started there were advertisements before the game started. Needless to say, at 11:00AM the station didn't play a Cowboys game, or any other game. It played some stupid family movie. I'm sure they did that because the station manager was a Cowboys fan, and I guess they weren't playing that day or time. There were calls but I can't remember what the outcome was. And there was a lot of Steeler fans in Phoenix believe it or not. At least Wichita Falls got to see part of the game.

Now games run well past 3:20 or more thanks to commercials every other play plus challenges/instant replays-all the s#it nfl put in to drag games on as long as possible so they can maximize commercial time for profit.

So the bottom line here is in one football game we get 1 hour 45 minutes of commercials..........My point is TV is entirely too damn much commercials imagine your favorite movie or tv show taking almost 3 times as long to watch it!!! Now all that said why is that when live at a game its the fastest 3 hours you ever have in your life????
