I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Felix Pappalardi’s career would flourish in the 1960’s and 70’s. While the name may not be instantly recognizable, he was instrumental in the success of big named musicians with Guitar Player magazine referring to him as a Giant among Giants. He would produce and write music for the band Cream before joining the group Mountain as their bass player and was co-lead vocalist. But by the 80’s his career and personal life were in a freefall. Couple that with drugs, infidelity, and guns and well you get a pretty devastating result. Not just that, but what happened to his killer is pretty shocking. That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video.
Let me know in the comments section your thoughts on today’s story.
Born in 1939 in the Bronx to a father who was a doctor, Felix Pappalardi would study piano and violin and soon enough could play virtually any instrument. He would eventually move to Ann Arbor to study music at the University of Michigan. Despite being a good student, he dropped out of school and hit the road playing with bands before joining the folk scene in new york.it was here he met his wife and musician and poet Gail Collins
By the 60’s Pappalardi soon started working as a songwriter before producing albums for the likes of Joan Baez and the Youngbloods. Then in 1967 he began working with supergroup Cream, the british blues band featuring Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker. The band was working on their second record Disraeli Gears. Pappalardi would be enlisted to produce the record, but he would also co-write a few songs with the members and how wife, including the tracks Strange Brew & World of Pain
He would continue to work with Creamon their two subsequent records Wheels of Fire and Goodbye. It was by the late 60’s Pappalardi would befriend and work with guitarist Leslie West who had played in the band the Vagrants before forming the band Mountain. Initially Pappalardi was going to produce Mountain, but they didn’t have a bass player at the time so he joined the group and performed with them most notably appearing the original incarnation of woodstock. West would reveal about Pappalardi to an interviewer "I couldn't believe how talented Felix was musically," "I knew nothing... I learned a lot of what not to do because of him, and I learned a lot of what to do because of him."
But his time in Mountain would be short-lived. He co-write a number of their songs including Mississippi Queen and his wife was credited with writing a handful of songs too. She even designed several of their album covers., Mountain would continue on until 1974 and Pappalardi got back into production work, and the timing seemed perfect considering he was dealing with hearing issues. But by the late 70’s his career wasn’t as hot as it was a decade prior and he soon found himself doing copious amounts of drugs with his wife while also having an open relationship with her.
Mountain drummer Corky Laing would talk to Classic Rock Magazine in 2021 about Felix and Gail’s relationship
When Mountain started out,Felix and Gail were a brilliant, creative team. But Gail got in big trouble with drugs. Gradually, people in the business who knew them knew she was a witch. She was very talented, very smart, but evil. Gail claimed she loved Felix, but they were always fighting. Felix was not a big guy, and Gail would beat the shit out of him. Other times they’d get high, and shoot at the walls in their house.”West would add One night when they were sitting in the living room,” West added, “they heard a continuous buzzing noise coming from inside the walls. Felix was probably high, so he started shooting at the walls from his chair. Turns out that the contractors on the house had stuffed hornets’ nests between the walls after Gail refused to pay a bill. So Felix was trying to shoot hornets.”
It was in 1982 Felix had fallen in love with a singer named Valerie Merians who was 27 and that casual relationship soon turned into something more. Gail soon found out and according to the new york daily news called her inlaws in December of 1982 telling them her marriagewas on the brink of collapsing.
Corky Laing would tell classic rock magazine In the fall of 1982 Felix wanted to re-form Mountain, and he tried to get me to

Leslie replaced me with Corky Laing and he did a real good job with Mountain and lasted about 40 years. I never could of lasted that long. I went on to play with The third World on RCA and later the American Squeeze. 100%, brother. Little discussed is that he produced that stone classic 1969 single, "Get Together" by the Youngbloods. And may I add, Felix was an angelic vocalist. I'll point to the track, "Nantucket Sleighride" on the eponymous album for just one example. What a talent.

The very first concert that I attended was Mountain, that would have been in 1974. They were fantastic to see live, and their musicianship was excellent. At that time I had known that Felix Pappalardi had produced Cream,. What I just learned here, was how he died. He gave a lot towards the evolution of not only rock 'n roll, but to music in general as well.

...I met Felix when I was 15 when my friend and I snuck into a college gym during their afternoon sound check. He let me walk on the stage ,where I met and talked to every band member. Felix was very friendly and when I told him I was a drummer, he told me to listen to jazz drummer Max Roach. Corky was nice to me as well, explaining his two different size kick drums. About 4 years later, our group was asked to open for a well known rock group....Mountain ! Backstage I hoped they might remember me, but, alas...it was not to be !! Felix was superb...Nantucket Sleighride and Theme for an Imaginary Western are two great songs featuring his strong vocals and bass playing, while West played his best signature solos on guitar. They made great records....better than today's shallow offerings !

I wouldn't mind seeing one on John Kay myself . I've been a fan of Steppenwolf since I was a teenager. In high school my friend and I found a Steppenwolf record in our class room. We were able to convince our teacher, Mrs. Bensen, to allow us to check out a record player from the library and let us play the record at the end of class, and during quiet/study time. Eventually someone brought in a Red Rider single Lunatic Fringe, and so the whole class got to enjoy some pretty good music for the remainder of the school year. In addition Mrs. Bensen's coolness factor went through the roof lol.

Well, it was a very unlikely place for a very unlikely band at a very unlikely time of day, but quite likely you're right, I just hadn't noticed risers there before. If Rod Serling had tapped me saying: You are in the Twilight Zone, it would have explained everything. A pinch to make me know it was real was that a few days later I saw an article in a campus paper about how Mountain had played without having obtained clearance or permission to play there, which seemed like some kind of final victory to me. I don't recall the article drawing any conclusion except that someone got sore and didn't even get anything out of that! Anyway, I cherish the memory more, now 🎵

I recall listening to Mountain’s debut album 53 years ago. I still believe that recording of Mississippi Queen to be the Quintessential Rock song. Felix’s voice on Theme To An Imaginary West has haunted me ever since first hearing. 🤟🏼

I saw Mountain in concert at “Cowtown Ballroom” in Kansas City back in the early ‘70’s. If I remember correctly the venue was just a big room with a stage - no seats. Great show! Loved the band and it was super loud!

@@jameshigginbottom3314...Hey james thats Cool! I saw The Richard Torrance band there as well as Robin Williams and the comedian Gallagher....many more I can't remember but loved that place, it was Small yet somewhat Victorian? Clearly from back in the early 1900s, and not a bad seat in the house, the Richard Torrance band was really good as well as every show that I saw there

Good video, finally was able to get the story on what happened to Felix....So unfortunate, as he had so much to offer musically....apparently, she thought she had more to offer than he did....part of it might have been a woman scorned....very selfish of her to have her cats put down....she could have made sure they had a good home...that tells more about her nature vs. Felix than anything else could....then again, the alcohol & drug use of both did not help....& in her case, she apparently was a very bad person, if the contractors put those nests in the walls of the house....very sad all around....😢

Both Look Leslie and Felix had a sound to the guitar and bass that was insanely powerful. And it was just simple equipment. Imo, i put Felix as a rock bassist right up there with JPJ and the OX in that era.

I've come to find out I am not enamored with the concept "a jury of your peers" In this particular case this ruling supports my feelings . Even after the Judge pointed out: "She called her lawyer 1st", the Jury still ruled in her favor. If the Jurys only exposure to the evidence in this trial was the written transcripts. I would bet this would not have been the minimal 4 yr sentence. Her crying/sob story hit a sympathetic note with these jurors.

Before the actual band Mountain, there was Leslie West's solo album that was just called "Leslie West Mountain" that also featured Felix on bass ( as opposed to Mountain's FIRST album called 'Climbing' which came after). It's such an awesome, simple rock record that featured one of the most sampled drum breaks of all time "Long Red". It's seriously worth a listen if you like the band Mountain.

Everyone wanted to say they wrote "Theme from an Imaginary Western". It was one of those songs that had a special beauty. But it was written by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown. It was on Jack Bruce's brilliant first solo album " Songs for a Tailor" with Jack singing. "Songs for a Tailor" was released in the US in October 1969. Mountain played it at Woodstock with Felix singing and recorded it for the "Climbing" Album. There are clips of Mountain doing the song live and I think that's why people think it was written by Mountain.
