My Uncle started working at Archie comics in the 70s when he was 18, and he still works there today! He started out as an intern and is now editor in chief, if you look on the very bottom of the start of the comics then you will see his name ‘Victor Gorlick’ and he gives me Archie comics all the time and it’s so great

My first exposure to Archie was a tv show called Archie's Weird Mysteries. A show that has strange things happening to Riverdale, from Veronica growing 50 feet tall to a robot football player to Vinny using a time machine. So hearing that people wanted to keep Archie the same made me scratch my head. I only got into it because the show was different.

I remember my first Archie book. It was my great grandmother's house, and she has a copy of an Archie Double Digest, and I believe it was from the early 1990's. I also later found three large Archie comics, probably from the 70's. Archie is one of those books that will always have a special place in my heart, no matter what happens to the characters or stories.
@Super_Mario1286 жыл бұрын
the 1990's comics were quite experimental too as they featured quite a lot of characters like Krystal and Brigitte Reilly who only appeared in a few issues because they didn't gel with the public.

I remember an issue where Archie got lost in the snow with an injured ankle, and was confronted by a starving, elderly wolf. He was eventually rescued and the wolf taken to a zoo. The ending line was; "Archie swears that the last time he visited her, she wagged her tail." I think this was in the 1980's, though I can't be sure

In the 1980s comic "Ninja High School" the author, Ben Dunn, was a fan of Archie comics. He put some characters in a one off issue from a neighboring town that were inspired by the Archie gang. Even though it would be covered as parody, Ben asked Archie comics for their OK. Archie comics said hell no & told him to change things more. It was such a bad experience that Ben got a kind of revenge in a later comic. There was a special 'Public Service Announcement' Ninja High School comic about STDs. In it a character had got a VD "From some girl named Veronica" from that nearby town. heh heh heh

Growing up as an adolescent, before manga/anime, Archie was the only comics to deal with adolescent & teenage concerns like dating or school life. I can't relate to being bitten by a radioactive spider or being an alien w/superpowers. I can relate to, being afraid to ask a girl I like on a date or to go steady. Not being invited to the party, everyone else is going to. Not having a date for prom. Or just trying to get enough money to take a girl out for a nice date.

The new Archie reboot was actually the first comic I ever kept up with. It was a pretty new feeling to buy a comic straight from the stands but hey, I just really liked all the characters and before I knew it, I was a fan! So I was really disappointed by how the butchered the characters in Riverdale. I had only been been reading the comics for a year and a half but that show was just so messed up and so shamelessly "not Archie" that I gave up on it. And it's too bad, I have no doubt that if they actually crafted a good show that kept to the spirit for the characters and the world it would have been fantastic! And now Riverdale's dumb murders and mysteries are starting to leak into the comics as the new writer (Nick Spencer) has very clearly stated that he loves Riverdale and is using it as inspiration. But still, those first 32 issues by Mark Waid and Ian Flynn are simply fantastic! I would highly recommend them to anyone who likes Archie or just want an introduction to the characters to see what they are all about!

I watched the first season of Riverdale, came across it by accident on Netfix and after a few episodes realized it's Archie link. It had been decades since I had picked up a comic so it took me a while to connect the dots. The show comes across as a modern drama with dark elements such as murder, incest, drugs, infidelity not to mention the whole Archie/teacher affair, whereas the comics I read in the 90s were comedic and bubbly with an innocent vibe, the worst thing that would happen was one of the girls losing a date with Archie to the other girl.

I gotta say, I've been reading Archie my whole life, and I love Riverdale. I don't see how people can say that it doesn't feel like Archie. If Archie works as a Horror story, it works as a Zombie story, a Marvel story, etc, how can you say it doesn't work as dark moody teenage tv drama just because you don't like that genre (which I don't tend to, but Riverdale is the exception)? That's one of the best parts about Archie, the characters work in any type of story/situations! Riverdale is a great take on the story of Archie, and if a moody dark teenage drama is what it takes to bring Archie back into the eyes of pop culture consuming youths, so be it! I love Archie and Riverdale!

Flint right on! I think ppl confuse it being "modernized and dark" with it being cynical, when it's actually very sincere and not pessimistic at all! It's about the struggle of maintaining innocence in a cynical world. That's what jughead represents, that's why he's obsessed with nostalgia.
@battleangel89037 жыл бұрын
Flint Its not about the situation itself, more along the lines of how you handle the characters. They've really slandered what the characters are, and to be honest, I would compare Archie's portayal to Superman's in the recent movies. Nice try, but you've missed a huge spot, you know what I mean? Decent show, horrible representation of characters. Literally, the only problem is the characters.
@8LiterallyJustTheNumber87 жыл бұрын
Ry Foster i really disagree. All the characters still feel true to the source material, but in a different world with different rules so they act a bit different because they're encountering different issues. The only real major sin is what they did with Ms. Grundie as far as im concerned.

A couple of observations and opinions about Archie. 1) Much of their continued success comes from the fact that they still sell comics in places like grocery stores, 2) The reason they can experiment like they have with stuff like Riverdale, Afterlife with Archie and Jughead's Time Police (anyone else remember that one from the '90s?) is because of how they tend to stay the same. I mean, it's surprising when they do a story that's so outside what they're known for. However, since they spent so much time unchanged over the years, it really wouldn't be a big deal if they just went back to their standard way of doing things if experimentation didn't pay off. No one would really blame them or be surprised.

The old Dan DeCarlo Archie's are brilliant. They may not have the greatest stories but DeCarlo's art on the series is something truly wonderful to behold. Likewise his Josie And The Pussycats work. If you like cosy, vernacular character designs and sexy-as-hell inks, DeCarlo's your man. Fantagraphics put out a collection of his slightly risque gag strips...some of his women look like Betty and Veronica all grown up. Just sayin'.... EDIT: Also, respect for mentioning Harry Lucey! Probably DeCarlo's equal in terms of cartooning chops. As I said, those old comics may be kind of "air-headed" but they're very pretty to look at. Oh and if you feel like trawling the back issue bins then you could do a lot worse than find some of DeCarlo (and Stan Lee's!) old Millie The Model comics. Recommended for any students of the medium, lovely work eschewing flash and dazzle; it's "merely" classic storytelling cartooning of the type which never *really* gets old, those comics still contain precious nuggets of comicking knowledge, for the initiated and uninitiated alike.

Imho Dan Decarlo was Archie Comics. The actual location of the town of Riverdale was always unclear on purpose, but Dan's rendering was what we only had to go on, and he had to have used some kind of in-real-life references, so one has to wonder how he came to visually conceptualize Riverdale.
@vollsticks2 жыл бұрын
@@21stCenturySpaceOdyssey Wow, I forgot I left this comment. I think all great cartoonists assimilate real-life references in some way. It's seems to me that you're actually not talking about actual photo-referencing, right? Or maybe you are! The best cartoonists are the ones who make any such referencing un-noticeable (Toth was amazing at this, for instance. Likewise Joe Kubert) because their style is just so over-arching that it kind of subsumes any photographic materials used in the creation of their comics. I have no idea if DeCarlo used photo reference for his iconic Archie stuff but if he did then I would never have guessed! Which is not to say that his architecture and spaces lack "believability". They absolute are real and concrete (pun unintended). I think he was just a massive talent. Ultimately it doesn't matter to me (if he used any photographic materials) very much but I would be very, very interested to find out!

In other words, Archie comics sold out big time. As a comic writer myself who was inspired by archie comics i stopped reading them some years back because they were getting so cringey and dated. I get they are trying to "bring it into the current generation" but c'mon. I can read many archie stories from the 60s and 70s and laugh at their jokes still, their originality, the some what darker and more comedically violent jokes and stories, now, Archie is a shadow of its former self. A shallow pool of trying to hard to stay relevant, in return making archie stories banal and dated. I dont care if archie was getting stale, hire new writers, but why change every aspect of your characters to the point they are no longer themselves simply to desperately cling to current trends. If you wanted to make a soap, make a soap with new characters, introduce new characters and see how they go, build on them, dont permanently change EVERY aspect of your current characters simply to try and follow current trends. In 30 years alot of 1960s and 1970s archie classics will be still readable, timeless, simple, original and funny, where as this banal trash they are spewing out now (and yes im talking to you you sad excuse of a teen drama show to make archie "edgey") will be dated and mocked, go find some old archie stories where they went with trends, see how dated those are, current archie in 30 years will be unreadable dated trash, it will be to comics what vanilla ice's "ice ice baby" is to music. I even wrote a story of my own with my own characters flat out mocking the unrecognizable nature of archie comics now a days, and esspically the characters in cw's popular archie drama.. if selling out was an Olympic sport archie comics would take gold.
Going all out with the VFX on this one, aren't ya? Really helps to explain the material. Well done.

Great overview. Thanks for the video. I was a part of that original demographic that saw the Archies in the 60's and liked the cartoons. I never knew they even had a pulse today. Fascinating story. I enjoy your presentation. I'm subscribing.

ya if you like having a middle finger waving in your face. :) changing an icon is like giving like only seeing bruce wayne in a batman film going to therapy. riverdale and the high school are based on real world places. The high school, being Haverhill high school in haverhill mass. The show kinda have the inspiration the middle finger, as prior to all of this the town was gonna build an archie museum, to honor that. Kinda can't now since this shi.
@captainamerica65457 жыл бұрын
Azura Moonstar it's not really a middle finger LOL. They said what the show would be like way before we got a trailer for it. The show's great imo. Don't like it? Stick to the comics, you'll be fine.

Riverdale doesn't feel like Archie comics to me much but to his credit it's a well-written show with some great acting and the pacing is good and it keeps you wanting to know what happens next. Take it for what it is teen drama with the characters named after Archie characters.

An Archie pilot was produced in 1964. Not much in the way of big names of the time, but William Schallert (The Patty Duke Show as Patty's "Poppo") was cast as Fred Andrews (Archie's dad), Mary Grace Canfield (best known as Ralph Monroe from Green Acres) as Miss Grundy, and Cheryl Holdridge (from the original Mickey Mouse Club) as Betty Cooper. It was fairly faithful to the source material.

Yooo, this was super interesting, I was of the mindset that Archie comics were outdated kids stories and i'd never even so much as batted an eyelid at them (so much so that I had no idea there was a 2015 reboot?!). It's cool to know their history and the direction they're going in now! I genuinely may have never know if it wasn't for this video, good looking out Scott!

Mr Not That Famous >good show no
@marielysdiane33427 жыл бұрын
Mr Not That Famous I think it's okay if it's nothing like the show. It's just a different interpretation like when someone covers a song and they keep the lyrics but change the meaning and the story. However Betty and Jughead's relationship is unforgivable and should not have happened

It's as much like the comic as heath ledger's joker is. It adds cinematic texture 2 notoriously flat archetypes. If it was just like the comics it would be "saved by the bell"

You skipped over the Filmation TV shows too fast. They made more than just the 17 eps for the 68-69 season, there was Sabrina, the Groovie Goolies, Funhouse, US of Archie etc etc. This was huge back then. Didn't say it was all that great, but--that's the peak of the comic's run in the public eye I would imagine. I'm all for the reboots etc. Also wasn't Bob Montana a big deal here? You didn't say much on him either.
@jennifersman79905 жыл бұрын
mowm88 Right I didn’t know the Archie cartoon had only 17 episodes it seemed like it ran forever, I guess that was because they did so many variations on it and I was a kid, so what’d I know?

My great granddad owned tons of the Archie comics. My sister and I used to read them all the time. And when I watched Riverdale, I was kind of shocked tbh. It was soooo different. It's outputting how different the Archie comics and Riverdale are. But, Riverdale is a good show.

A little Archie-related music trivia. "Sugar, Sugar" was the third single by The Archies, and only got the heavy radio airplay necessary to become a hit after it was re-released and played for disc jockeys who did not know (while hearing it for the first time) that it was from a "cartoon" group. Jingle-singer Ron Dante was the lead vocalist, backed by Toni Wine and Andy Kim, (On follow-up hit "Jingle Jangle", Dante sang the *female* lead in a falsetto voice.) "Sugar, Sugar" not only reached Number 1 on the Billboard magazine Hot 100, but was Number 1 on the magazine's year-end chart for 1969 -- biggest song of the year! Ron Dante later co-produced Barry Manilow's first nine albums.

The first time I discovered Archie, I was 11, at a family friend’s house, in the bathroom, when I saw a magazine holder, and found an Archie comic. It was in French however, but I still read it, and fell in love.

RE: The Archie animated TV cartoon - There were 17 original half-hour shows, but "The Archie Show aired Saturday mornings on CBS from September 1968 to August 1969, when it was replaced by an hour-long version, The Archie Comedy Hour. Filmation continued to produce further Archie television series until 1978."...Also, FYI - The cartoon series was where Hot Dog, Jughead's pooch, was introduced.
