Trollface is truly a one of a kind meme, I highly doubt any other old school meme could replicate the re-emergence and popularity its garnered. This video was a blast to watch, I feel the editing was a huge step up from your previous videos and i cant wait to see what the future of the channel has to offer

I used to read rage comics all the time in the early 2010’. I haven’t thought about troll face for years.I didn’t knew all this crazy lore. It’s like learning an old childhood friend got in trouble with the law and ended up on prison.

We can't forget that the trollge came in a perfect time to blow up as it did. It was the time when analog horror and liminal spaces gained a lot of popularity as well as the now legendary "It's just a burning memory" by The Caretaker resurfaced. At the same time Wendigoon begun his internet activity popularizing horror even further. The pandemic struck as well locking everyone down, causing a lot of depression and reminding us of out fragile mortality. Internet became the perfect breeding ground for indie horror stories and trollge became the perfect vessel for that.

This is really weird but I had never heard of the Cover Yourself in Oil meme. I saw it referenced in a video I was watching like 30 minutes before I clicked this one and was so confused by what it meant. It's crazy how that one meme has sparked an entire subgenre of cryptic horror. You did an AMAZING job laying out the timeline; I never knew Trollface had evolved this way. It hit home with me in such a different way since I was an iFunny user back in the late 00s and early 10s. Great work, please never stop doing what you love

Is Trollface really capable of dying? I initially thought it had in the early 2010's, seeing one on a t-shirt for sale at a bodega at the mall. I remember thinking the meme was dead outside of ironic references to it in the form of redrawing it in MS Paint with synonymous phrases to "Problem?" in forms of increasingly elaborate ways to inform the viewer that they had been trolled. That lasted for a bit, and every once in a while I would see Trollface pop up in some kind of ironic context. Now that Trollface has been brought into the landscape of the 2020's internet, it's mutated but... the best examples you showed had a sort of pitch-black humor to them just through the initial subversion of the Troll Logic format (because of course this was a specific subgenre of Trollface memes). I had no idea any of these memes existed beyond the May 2021 NYC "Heaven's Stairway" Incident, which I genuinely find funny. And the best Trollge stuff looks like the people who made them were either having a laugh or just a lot of fun making them; I cannot take them seriously no matter how gruesome or disturbing they are because it's Trollface. Am I old? I might be old. I feel like Trollface, at this point, is too important to internet culture to ever fully go away. Doge memes mutated similarly and got increasingly more weird and specific. Pepe became a hate symbol but mutations of him live on through his use on places like Twitch. Cat videos are eternal, and Simpsons references have been there since the start of the World Wide Web. Nobody rushed to revive the Dancing Baby or Hampster Dance or All Your Base are Belong to Us. They could have picked any meme, but so long as trolling is a thing, I'm not sure Trollface will ever truly die. He'll live on, just to troll you, even if he doesn't have a resurgence quite like the beginning of the 2020's. Trolling is a art, after all.

"They could have picked any meme, but so long as trolling is a thing, I'm not sure Trollface will ever truly die." Trolling has been a thing for the longest time, look up the "trickster archetype". The Trollface is the incarnation of a Jungian archetype. That's why it keeps coming back, the human subconscious instinctively recognizes it.
@CatBountry
@CatBountry 4 ай бұрын
@@vlc-cosplayer I mean, yeah, if you want to go bigger picture with that, that's true. But I was more referring to Trollface specifically in regards to the internet and trolling as it's understood in the culture of the internet. Anonymity makes causing mischief more enticing, as the reaction doesn't involve risking physical confrontation. That's not wholly unique to the internet, but it's a lot easier.

As a millennial who spends a lot of time studying ancient apocalyptic memes... this one hits different. A lot of times in the past, art about frustration at this grand scale has a major political subtext. These people feel powerless against the entrenched systems of their day and can't help but fantasize about lashing out at them, and even having cosmic forces intervene to destroy those responsible. And with these Trollge epics, they're about joining in with that apocalypse, becoming part of the revolution, and throwing off all external and internal pressure to submit to the power structure. You can see a kind of Lovecraftian parody in the Trollge stuff, obviously, but I think these are tapping into the same feelings of political rage that fueled the original apocalyptic fantasies. But perhaps that's just me making everything about my special interests. Great vid, Lugalan. I had no idea about this stuff.

I think it’s existential, not political. The ideas of childhood memories, lying in bed, pursuing happiness, “what do you see when you look in the mirror?”. They are all too personal and specific to the individual. It feels like the creators are grasping for meaning and coming up short every time. It’s not a coincidence so many of these situations end in su1cide.

@@herminlionel1909 A story of battling the unseen negative forces controlling the universe, which ends in a heroic self-sacrifice and the beginning of a new era... I suppose if you see that as existential or political depends on how you interpret such stories generally. Perhaps the distinctions are fuzzier than we usually think.
