Canopy beds actually have multiple good reasons to exists. In big old draughty castles, they created a smaller, easier to heat space. There are multiple different types of insects that are hindered by the canopies. Privacy was not always a given. It dampened sound and kept out light.

Okay so I was gonna describe my perfect weird fucked up bed idea, basically a secret pocket room where the door is behind a mirror that slides out of the way, & it's a little room with glow in the dark clown paintings & 90% of the floor is taken up by a bare bed, a shelf next to it with various pillows & blankets stored neatly, & a chest full of huggable plushies. But now I'm thinking a whole fucking secret mirror door house. You walk into my home to find afront you a mirror, to your left a door bearing a label reading "Never to be unlocked. Panic if found unlocked, open, or broken," & to your right a hallway that I lead you down to see that the walls are covered in even more mirrors & creepy paintings. Surely, this space does not extend any deeper into the full house than merely hugging the perimeter. We come to a door labeled "Doll Room" with a step up, & I tell you to brace yourself. With a name like that, you'll surely see some sizeable number of dolls, perhaps a whole shelf, or maybe innumerable quantities lining every inch of wall, ceiling, & floor. But no. There's only Fred, lone old Fred, sitting in his wheelchair. Of course, you see the door from the beginning, this side covered wholly in scrapes & scratches. I gesture with a "Check this" towards a large wall mirror with a few steps up to it, & open it up. You've been unknowingly passing by doors into the proper meat of the house the entire time. Anyways, let's go to Clown Room now, unlike Fred, he likes visitors. I'm not sure how a clown ended up in the size & shape of a room in my home, decorated with furniture partly made of his outgrown bones, nor why he likes people being in his normally sized & shaped clown innards, but Tommy Knockers does make a pretty nice room. Mind the sounds of breathing & erotic moan-honks when you take a step in there, he's just like that.
