"The Black Beverly Hills" -- Mini Documentary

Black Beverly Hills from 1925 to present day. The black beverly hills neighborhoods, including Ladera Heights, View Park Winsor Hills, and Baldwin Hills are the richest black neighborhoods in the world. In the beginning, these three neighborhoods were all once all-white owned and denied blacks the right to reside. However, in the mid 60's, the neighborhood experience white flight, bringing in more and more successful black families. By the 70s, all three neighborhoods were named the "Black Beverly Hills," due to the fact that many black celebrities, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and doctors moved in.

My grandparents were the first black family on their block in 1960 in Windsor Hills. Our family still owns the house. I used to take walks with my grandmother and she showed me where Ray Charles, Tina Turner, etc lived. In Baldwin Vista, where I grew up, we had a few people, too. ;) You did a great job with this. It's sad how much things are changing. Thank you for putting it together.

Happy you did this documentary to preserve our history. I've personally lived in Baldwin Hills/Baldwin Village all my life. Over 28 years now and I still live there till this day. Ive been seeing all the gentrification take place now currently. The neighborhood is definitely mixed. I've been seeing asian and whites moving in literally. The neighborhood has definitely changed for the better but I want my black people to continue to benefit. So, don't selll your houses and if you do sell it, go ahead and sell it to an African American person, and buy lots of property in that area too! Thank you for a job well done on this video.

The problem with other people saying "get over it" in regards to non-blacks moving into the neighborhood is that I don't think they are fully aware of the problems blacks have faced when attempting to buy nice houses in nice neighborhoods elsewhere even if they had enough money. (Discrimination by realtors.) Because of this bad history and the non-blacks trying to keep blacks out of "their" nice neighborhoods (and trying to keep them in various slums all over the US), it shouldn't take a genius to understand why someone would recommend selling houses exclusively to other black people. Because even in 2022 it is well-documented that many Americans still can't grasp the concept of black people's civil rights and such...

Great nostalgic film...I wish it were longer. I was born and lived in the Baldwin Hills/ Baldwin Village/ "The Jungle" area until the mid 90s. I remember visiting my aunt's house in Baldwin Hills and the area was so beautiful, I could literally see the Hollywood sign from the dining room window.

Shamia, I read an article, and from a lady that was a Los Angeles native- she said that Ladera heights was located the furthest to the west, and that Baldwin hills and VP/ WH were a little closer to the hoods, thereby making Ladera heights perceived a little more desirable, for some looking to buy in that area.

I love the documentary. I lived in Baldwin Hills for 10 years, but had to move due to an "arm" real estate loan. I moved to Texas, but would love to come back to California and figure out a way to buy again. I know the housing prices are through the roof now. Very nice video. Brought back many memories for a man who grew up in the Baldwin Hills Village Green from 1943 to 1960. I was at the grand opening of the Baldwin Hills theater in 1949 where I met Roy Rogers. On Sundays very well-dressed blacks went to the Baldwin theater for the evening shows. Otherwise, as you know the area was predominantly white. I was working at the rodeo Bowl December 14th, 1963 when the Baldwin Hills dam broke. I rescued an elderly man with my surfboard. I met Del Shannon, song Runaway, in Santa Barbara in 1983 where he performed the song at an AA convention at the Santa Barbara fairgrounds. Thanks for the memories.

The saddest thing I've seen since covid is my BFF having to go head-to-head/toe-to-toe with her two siblings who are dead set on SELLING the PAID OFF/NO MORTGAGE/CLEAR TITLE HOUSE their parents worked hard to provide for them. She wants to remodel and MTR it with generational wealth as the focus while they want to sell for quick money. Diversity is fine; however, GIVING UP without so much as having 39 acres fall back on is NOT the way for us to go.

My seventy-three-year-old white mother has lived in Ladera Heights almost her entire life, and I grew up there as well. Being the only white kid in an affluent black neighborhood is definitely a perspective very few have had. If I you do a part 3, I would definitely be honored to be interviewed.

Once you go black it looks like you can go back. It's basic economics as middle to upper class whites can't afford Santa Monica and West Los Angeles so they have moved east to see "cheaper" homes. They are probably putting down $200K on the homes in Baldwin Hills plus loans are easier for whites to get than blacks. It is not a level playing field. Then the new owner guts the house and does a complete remodel. You are going up against big money and people of color will find it almost impossible to compete. This is a systemic issue as the buyers are no where close to being the same.

There are many nice "Black" areas of LA I was a service worker for years there and I did fine when ever I had a call there in Baldwin Hills. I would not work in certain areas because I had trouble collecting or I was worried about having my truck stolen or my tools.

In 1942, when my family bought their newly built home in Windsor Hills, it was predominately white. As more blacks moved in, there was never any racial tension. My Grandfather developed life long friendships with the neighbors. There was a mutual respect back then that does not exist in that neighborhood today, 3 generations later. Neighbors would outright say, when you gonna sell? They'd find any little thing wrong in order to report us. Left the trash can on the street one day longer than permitted. My car cover has a tear along the side, actually got a letter from the county ordering me to buy a new one or get fined. The list goes on and on. So yeah! tell me again how racist I am? How many racist white people you know that live their whole life in an area where no whites live? I'll wait!

Even though we were there long before any of the surrounding neighbors. They never liked the fact that we were there. A long history of harassment and racist behavior towards us.

Daniel R, you would need to understand a little bit of American history as to why neighborhoods such as the "Black Beverly Hills" materialized in the first place. Across the nation and prior to desegregation, blacks, no matter their educational or income level, were forced to reside in overcrowded slums, ghettos, hoods etc. Once the professional/educated class of blacks were able to purchase homes in nice neighborhoods (all overwhelmingly white at the time) white flight occurred in most cases, opening up room but no one but blacks to move in, as it was undesirable to whites by that time. Overtime, as all of the original black children of the doctors, lawyers, entertainers, etc that grew up in the area and overtime, it sort of lost that " most sought after neighborhood for the upwardly mobile blacks" and that left mostly our elderly and lower income brothers and sisters and that led to a general decline of that area of Black AND Hispanic neighborhoods across the country. Same thing is happening where I live in Dallas. Although its not really black neighborhoods, but high% Hispanic neighborhoods, like the Bishop arts district, Elmwood, Vicery place, Jefferson Blvd. Most high income predominantly white neighborhoods in the city are very expensive, leaving many whites not able to afford those prices either. Therefore, they have to look in more affordable areas over the more expensive west side, like Bel air, Malibu, Brentwood, etc. Last thing, I think another reason this area has experienced black flight is due simply to the fact that most rich black professionals/entertainers live in all other wealthy neighborhoods throughout LA and some have even left the state of CA, where they can get more bang for their buck. All it takes is more wealthy blacks to repopulate those areas like they did in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
