I never quite got the hate Gurgi gets from reviews and synopses of the film. I mean he's not the best film character in cinematic history, but I didn't think he was THAT annoying, and he didn't seem to be a coward so much as aware of his own limitations. My wife and I saw this film together, and we both felt sad at the part where Gurgi sacrificed himself.

HenryvKeiper His character is kinda a guilty pleasure. I don't hate him, but at the same time, he was a little irritating. Mostly, I think the hate is because of the voice maybe, because it kinda feels like that's where Gollum got the inspiration for his voice. At least that's my opinion.

But yeah, when he chooses to jump in the Cauldron and save Tarran and his friends, I was legitimately shocked, and even more sad when this scene played, with Tarran picking up his lifeless body after they traded the Cauldron back for Gurgi. I was crying buckets thinking he was actually dead.

Then he wakes up, and I was so pissed that they faked us out! What a dick move, making us think he was gone forever!

I've remembered Gurgi since watching the film as a kid. He's ace.

I love this little music piece. So sad, happy and majestic at the same time! Its such a shame that not everyone is aware of this movie. I love it! I wish more could appreciate it for what it is. A great movie with great characters, villain and music. I liked the animation aswell. Although I wish it could have been maybe 10 more minutes for a little bit more character development I suppose. Otherwise it really is a gem among underappreciated Disney movies!

Funny thing is, I've been itching to see Don Bluth's "Dragon's Lair" make it onto the big screen as a 2-D feature film, and then I go and watch "The Black Cauldron," scratches that itch! Still wanna see "Dragon's Lair," though.

And judging by the score, *spoilers* not only Gurgi is alive, but this is the first time where Taran and Eilonwy unexpectedly kissed. Don't get me wrong, that part was cute.
