This week we visited the Black Country Living Museum. It's an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings in Dudley, West Midlands. It is located in the centre of the Black Country, 10 miles west of Birmingham an features historic characters showing you what it was like to live and work in one of the first industrialised landscapes in Britain, as you explore 26 acres of reconstructed shops, pubs and houses. We also find the filming location of Peaky Blinders Series! We find out what it's like, if you should visit and if it's worth the money?

Interesting place to visit. Captures the feel of those times. Very nostalgic, just shows how hard life was back then, but there is something quaint and endearing about the shops and streets somehow. Definitely worth a visit.

Hasn't changed a bit in over 40 years. Amazing. Even the houses are comfy, no draughts or leaky roofs. Can never understand why they were condemned.

Mother used to treat me to fish and chips in Hobbs chip shop most Saturdays for helping her with the weekly shopping in Dudley. We used to sit in and have our fish and chip lunch. Hobbs was in Hall st and not far from the smiler pub . Ww lived in the priory estate then. Most people were wishing to get out of the poverty in those days but investigation later revealed that all 3 big political parties contrived to keep us in low pay so that businesses could compete in the international market by keeping wages down. It was only later when the labour government subsidised grants for extra training and qualifications so we could get better jobs with more money.

Wow that's a story. It's funny to think that these buildings that are now in the BCLM were everyday places for people in those communities, given they're now tourist attractions! Thanks also much for watching and your interesting comment. Matt and Issy

@@ExploreHomeRepeat The low pay was made worse because exporters could claim extra compensation out of the taxes just to keep their prices down. We were effectively subsidising the exporters through taxation and when we had to buy things at a higher cost. A mate of mine used to haul steel coils to Harwich for export to Scandinavia. He used to tell us about those very same coils of steel coming back into the country through Harwich a year later. The scam went on for years and just showed how corrupt the system was. Corrupt companies made so much profit it was worth them shipping thousands of tons abroad and still had money to pay to bring them back years later. As a truck driver I got to experience lots of corruption mainly from council run contract

Great video. Being from the area I remember quite a few of the buildings in their original locations. They have been relocated with great precision you wouldn't know they have been moved

So surprised my first time to see this or hear of this place 😮 why are they calling this city of dudley (Black Country)?
@ExploreHomeRepeat
@ExploreHomeRepeat 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! The reason it's called the black country is because in the 1800s there were a lot of ironworking foundries and forges, plus coal mines. It meant the air was full of smoke and coal dust all the time. The name has then stuck, even though all of that industry has virtually all gone. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already!
