Many people are of the view that the black family went into decline with Lyndon Johnson's Great Society programs. But notice Moynihan was highlighting the decline in black family formation before those Great Society programs. Those programs started around 1964-5 about the time of this interview.

CrowdPleeza Exactly. It’s been going on much longer. I’ve read the report and he was cited research from the 1930’s and 40’s even. It’s just that things have gotten worse after LBJ. However, he did speak about the Black Middle Class doing okay but, I think he spoke of the possibility of even them falling back into problem (Don’t quote me on this, ok. I can’t fully recall.)

I thought he made an interesting observation when he said that there was no Negro family in the slave world. This sounds like slavery gave Blacks a very dysfunctional foundation for family formation moving forward.

I have been saying this for years. They show movies with us living in these cozy cabins, fire popping in the fireplace. Children sleeping in a bed. They have been lying about the enslavement era to Black people for centuries. Slaves came out of the enslavement era DUMB! This Black female has always been in charge of the family, which is why it's so fucked up. When Black Men were in the home it just wasn't as bad but it was always there.

As a black man in America, there was a time when Black people didn’t have out of wedlock children. My grandmother was born in 1906 and most black women in her generation did not do this. In my father’s generation black people did not do this either. This is a modern phenomenon. Those generations didn’t do this because it was a sin and they were more religious.
@CrowdPleeza2 жыл бұрын
@@aalewisiii I don't know about that. I know of older black men with several children by different women. That type of thing goes way back before the 60s.

@@CrowdPleeza but not at 70% (and you know that.). Those generations didn’t try to justify it and make excuses. They knew they did wrong. Back then a majority of black children were born to married couples. And you cannot make a point with anecdotes.

The Black family structure has essentially collapsed, with the White following. For a family to run financially you no longer need two parents and now the amount of single parent households is staggering. Children need the emotional and general safety of two parents, girls need their mothers a little more and boys need their fathers a little more but both are needed for a stable upbringing. It's sad how fast the destruction of the family has happened. Moynihan seen the coming decades before society did, if society even has yet.

Remember that Society also tells men to not Marry. Men who are bachelors are celebrated and glorified in the media. I had to straighten my son out because of this. Media brain washes men to care more about keeping their money then the children they bring into this world.

I wouldn’t say “tells” I would use the word “forces.” Media pushes liberated women and they have an agenda to emasculate the man. Plus the courts are never in favor of the man in the divorce process.

Unfortunately, liberals misinterpreted his report during a time when White supremacy was a salient barrier to Black achievement. However, as a liberal myself, I won't use their misjudgement as a cause to convert to the conservative/Republican party. I believe we just need to modify our ideology, so that it is more centrist in some areas such as poverty, welfare, and racism. Moynihan was a liberal/democratic centrist, who briefly switched to the Republican party, only to return to the Democrats. He had the right idea

Something I've heard that's shaping Black out of wedlock numbers is that married Blacks are having fewer kids compared to the past. So I guess this makes the unmarried Black numbers bigger in comparison?

You might not know it but this report and Moynihan were castigated in some liberal circles for "blaming the victim"!!!! It was also called "fuel for a new racism"!!! Moynihan was fired or resigned. Then "All public discussion in mainstream liberal circles of issues like the state of the black family...simply ceased.." The quotes are from " The Achievement of American Liberalism, The New Deal and its Legacies " ed. By William H Chafe

+Thomas Barnes I wonder what those liberals specifically had problems with as far as the report? Back in 1965 racism was a bigger barrier on the lives of Blacks.

CrowdPleeza Watch any of the videos about Daniel Patrick Moynihan and what was referred to as The Moynihan Report. The late Senator from New York was perhaps the last of a breed - a philosopher statesman - the exact opposite of the mentally-ill anti-intellectual cretin who occupies the White House.

read tom sowell the black family was intact after slavery and was slightly ahead of whites at cretin points. it was after the great society that the decline started. and its also wrong that american slavery was worst than other slavery. there was more whites enslaved in northern africa then there were blacks enslaved in america. i am not trying to make excuses for slavery i am just saying that humans have enslaved each other since recorded history. now Moynihan report was true but his contention that slavery in the USA was worst is just not true. like i say if you have an open mind just read tom sowells book on slavery and get the facts.

Bray Rob its propaganda becuase it created an atmosphere of guilt for whites to help and encourage social welfare, which only made the black situation worst, blks came out of slavery killing it, and build some great townships but the democrat lead kkk supported in taking it all down, leaving blks with one option running to the gov for help, this Social justice was the start of bringing in this big governent superstate that looks to enslave us all except this time it will be economly... its propaganda becuase its not telling the whole story and its not leading to the things that will help blacks prosper but to that which will make them more dependent and therefore easier to control
