The Black Forest Trail - Summer 2021 - 42 miles

The legend! The Black Forest Trail is a premiere Pennsylvania trail not for the faint of heart. This brutal 42 mile circuit takes you through stunning views and rugged Pennsylvania back country. Loaded with top-notch primitive campsites, this trail will will leave you wanting more. Join me as I take 4 days to traverse this path and enjoy a very memorable adventure.
There are many different parking areas to start from. I started around mile 24 off of rt 44.
Trailhead parking (rt 44/Trout Run rd) : 41.4613741 -77.5727426
day one: 6miles
day two: 11miles
day three: 15 miles
day four: 10 miles

I did BFT last year in 2 different trips and it is by far my favorite PA trail! Brutal for this old gal in some places but the views were spectacular! I camped up at the top of the climb out of Slate Run (I was going clockwise). I went in June and I was surrounded by a sea of Mountain Laurel in some sections. Simply glorious! Thanks for sharing your adventure!

What are those yellow boxes for?

Those are trail registers. Hikers sign them as they pass. You leave information for other hikers and the maintenance crew. They are also used for finding the last places you’ve been if you need rescued.
