The audio for Born a Crime really is the way to go. So glad you're going to give it a read. Trevor's comedy is mostly based on his accents and impressions and he truly delivers that in the audio while also giving a great memoir. You won't be disappointed.

I am so excited about Harlem Shuffle. The Nickel Boys was just brilliant. I think I will dig out The Underground Railroad to read this month. I have a lovely edition from Waterstones that I bought on my last visit to London. That’s a beautiful edition of Their Eyes Were Watching God. I’ve been trying to find a really lovely edition of it since it’s such a special book.

I'm going to chime in and confirm what others have said that you MUST listen to the audio of Born a Crime. It adds **so** much to the experience.

LOL, "Barracoon" is the only book I've read by Zora Neale Hurston so you're not the only one. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" has been on my shelf for ages but I just haven't gotten to it yet. I keep saying "I gotta read that, I gotta read that," but I always end up choosing something else for my next read. One of these days, though, it WILL happen!

I read Their Eyes Were Watching God at the end of January. It is so gloriously written - I knew about 1/4 of the way through that it would be a re-read for me.

Love that you’re doing this tag. Please get to Beloved. I’m re-reading and re-loving it this month. And Born a Crime 👌🏽 on audio. It’s a fantastic memoir: funny, heartbreaking and thoughtful in its interweaving of South African history with Noah’s life story. I have you to thank for putting Transcendent Kingdom on my list last year-it was terrific. I have inadequate language to express my deep love of Baldwin.

The Prophets is absolutely a must read. I anticipate that it will eventually become required in reading for secondary schools or colleges that have Gender Studies and/or African-American studies.

Hahaha! We made a conscious decision to keep it up for a while because it brings us joy. After 2020, we figured that was justification enough. Will it be up all year? I don't know. But it's definitely here for the duration of winter.

I loved doing this tag and for prompt #2, I did both of Gyasi's books too. Great minds. Their Eyes is so good. If you want to audiobook it Ruby Dee does the narration and it's phenomenal. I read it and listened to it. Chef's Kiss. Thanks for the shout out!

Hey now, great video, and list of books, full of excellent comments to consider. "If you haven't read Yaa Gyasi, what are you doing with your life?"...Well, that is a very good question worth thinking about. James Baldwin +++++

Since finishing Real Life, Filthy Animals has become my most anticipated read for this year by any author. And, funnily enough, it comes out less than a week before my birthday. I plan on reading Leave the World Behind this month, but I also have Rumaan Alam's first book, Rich and Pretty, as well, and so I've started with that. Thanks for the great video!

I found "The Souls of Black Folk" by W.E.B. Dubois while cleaning out the back of my car this week, so I'm taking that as a sign, not just to be neater but to remove that classic from my DNF list.

Love your TBR. The only problem I have with born a crime is that you can only listen to the audio book on audible it's "exclusive" on there. You can't get it from Overdrive. P.S their eyes were watching God is extremely difficult because it's written in a deep Floridian dialect. Just listen to it on audio.

Robin Miles reads the book. Cicely Tyson reads an introduction and Viola Davis reads the forward that she wrote for the book.
