Both my grandfather and his son fought in the Black Watch RHC. The former survived the entirety of the First World War. The latter, alas, was killed at Verrieres Ridge during the Second. It was they who inspired me to pick up the pipes. I've been playing for 22 years and still love their sound and significance.

My great uncle fought with the Black Watch. He was wounded on October 13th and died the following day. He was from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. His name was John Patrick Murphy.

All I ever knew about my great grandfather was that he died in the Second World War. I have been doing the family tree lately and I have discovered he served with the 2nd battalion Black Watch. He died in Burma 1944.

My Dad was a sniper in the Blackwatch and after being wounded twice. The last of which he spent three months in hospital and was too late to return to the front, and spent the last 6 months of the war on guard duty of German POW. He was awarded many medals of bravery. Which he personally never gave any merit to, as as he put it...'they should have given these to those who died'.
