The first time I read TBI I was utterly disappointed because of the lack of plot and couldn't grasp, why people love it so much. But upon reread I finally noticed how amazing Joe abercrombie's prose is and how he crafts his characters. Needless to say, I seriously fell in love and can't wait to get into the next installment in the series!

Very true! So have you not read Before They Are Hanged yet?

@@FantologyPodcast not yet, I've only finished rereading TBI about 2 weeks ago and now I have a ton of stuff to read/learn for uni, but man I'm excited! Once I'm free of exams I hope I'm gonna jump right back into the first law (tho I'm a bit nervous to be honest, I have faith in Joe abercrombie, but I think I have to bee in a particular mood to fully enjoy what he writes)

Very true. It's not for the faint of heart. The series is fantastic though. The books just get better!

Great discussion guys. I wa also frustrated by the lack of plot in TBI, but I enjoyed Abercrombie's writing. For me the addition of the humour made it feel like it sat half way between Disc World and Game of Thrones.

His humor is great. I wonder if everyone picks up on it, but the entire time he's just laughing at himself

@@FantologyPodcast I think that's why I was confused with the whole 'grimdark' thing. For me there was plenty of humour in the book.
@FantologyPodcast3 жыл бұрын
Grimdark is mostly referring to the hyper realistic commentary on human nature, with all these terrible people
@JohnG2253 жыл бұрын
@@FantologyPodcast "hyper realistic commentary on human nature" yes. Basically 'real life' is grimdark when it comes down to it.

Basically, but real life has hope in it too. There's not much of that in FL

Steven Pacey has also read "Let the Right One In", which is a seriously creepy, seriously sad vampire novel. That's definitely grimdark

Thanks for the tip! I'm sure it's good. The guy could read assembly instructions and have me on the edge of my seat
