Hey Sasquatch, I know exactly how you feel. But, if you'd permit me, I would like to say a few things. I'd imagine that we are in much the same boat- totally outclassed by Otis Williams. I play regularly at church and at my high school, but he and I are in no way comparable. Furthermore, I'd imagine that we both compare ourselves to the other guys. We watch KZbin videos of other drummers absolutely killing it, and think to ourselves: "If I'm not as good as he is, am I any good at all?" or "Can I even call myself a drummer now?" I've been there, and it is no fun. It is also highly unproductive. Otis Williams (the guy in this video) is an outstanding drummer. There is so much you and I can gain by observing him. Conversely, there is so much we can lose by comparing ourselves to him. Here's why: 1. This man is a professional drummer. Unless I am mistaken, we are not. Would you expect to slice open a skull just like a brain surgeon? Or send a shuttle to mars, like a rocket scientist? Of course not. Those are trained professionals who get PAID to do that every single day. How, then, should you expect to play like Otis Williams if you are not a professional drummer? We are being far too hard on ourselves by making that comparison. 2. Yes, he is better than you at drumming. Yes, he is better than I am. And that is ok- because someone being "better" does not make you "bad." Someone else's talent never invalidates yours. 3. At a certain level, non-musicians won't know that Otis Williams is THAT much better than we are. We, the music practicing folk, know all to well. But the masses? They simply like to hear the dropping of beats... and that is something you and I can give to them. 4. The majority of humans don't even know how to hold a drumstick. If you're going to measure your drumming skill against others, why choose the 0.01% of people who are better? Why not compare yourself to the %99.99 of people that you outclass? Neither of those are fair comparisons, so best not to compare at all. 5. If we all sounded like Otis Williams, then we would all sound the same. The world of music needs that special thing that YOU do, that little flair that YOU add, that sound that only YOU can produce. There are jazz drummers, metal drummers, pop drummers, etc. And somewhere within all those categories, somewhere between all those genres, you fit perfectly and when you play you add variety and life to this wonderful world of percussion. Besides, talent is overrated anyway. I could absolutely play this song in my own way, and it would be fine- not because I'm that good, but because there is no "right" way to do it. And if I can do it, I'm sure that you can do it. So get out there, Sasquatch27. And when you do, remember that you are skilled. Remember that music isn't the same without you. Remember that some people can do it better than you can, but nobody can do it just like you can. Remember to learn from these guys, but never become them. And most of all, remember to rock on.

@AllGTG Too right. There's a good chance that sasquatch did mean it is a compliment, but if I have helped even one musician gain confidence I have done what I wished to do.
@noahkalmes77163 жыл бұрын
@AllGTG Best of luck! I have found drumming to be totally worth it, especially if you can find people to play with regularly (for me, that's church and school).

@noahkalmes7716 Wow, brother, that was most beautifully put. There is certainly a reason why our precious God and Father has exhorted us not to commit the sin of comparison. We are all at different levels on our journeys, whether that be in our spiritual walk with Christ or as you so articulately put it, on our musical journeys on this most excellent and satisfying instrument. Be encouraged brothers and keep pressing on towards excellence in Christ our Lord. Peace 💯😎

I love the sound of that snare. Love brass snares and that one is tuned perfectly to suit any style of music. Pops for gospel while being big and beefy at the same time for contemporary. Grant it some of that big and beefyness comes from mics and compression and such. But it’s gotta start with heads and tuning first.
