Our poor city was decimated. It explains the drab look in so many areas where rapid rebuilding that wasn't always for the best took place. Its such a shame Portsmouth was abandoned and forgotten about by the government after sacrificing so much during the war years.

My nana was a young woman in Portsmouth at this time. I wish I could show this to her and ask questions.

My house is actually pictured in one of these images! Have always wanted to see an image of my road during the blitz. Thank you

My Father was a messenger boy, on a bike, delivering messages to and from the Dockyard, when communication lines were down. He told me the sight he saw when bombs hit the Mile End Cemetery. Today's brats just can't imagine it. No ' Mental Health Issues ' excuses in those days !

Not Greetham Street, that`s the end of Middle St. with Hyde Park road to the left, looking into Russell St.

I had a neighbour who had been a fireman in Portsmouth during the Blitz. He told me about a couple of incidents he was called to. one of which was a bomb that hit an air raid shelter in Arundel street killing everybody inside. Another incident was a group of Canadian bomb disposal troops at the junction of Castle rd and Kings Rd dealing with a UXB which went off and killed them all. He had just been having a joke with them a few minutes before.

I lived in Arundel Street untill aged 10 in 1964.....We were Almost opposite the school on the corner of the Besant road junction with Arundel street and it was apparently the Shelter under the school took a direct hit killing Dozens of children and other people. Could Never pass that school without thinking about that horror.... we still had an old Anderson shelter in the back garden of big old rented house. I grew up playing on the bombsites all around there, thought they were like fields then all covered in Greenery.......
