As a relative of someone that stayed with the Benders but made it out alive this was of particular interest to me. They did target people with money and Kate would sometimes flirt with men and invite them out to see her. My relative did have a lot of money on him but dressed in patched shabby clothes when returning from selling cattle. It was safer. He sewed the money into his coat. He had a meal and rest then went on his way home.

My family is from the Bender section of the country in Kansas. Their place was right outside of Parsons, Ks on a hill. When they ran they did go to Thayer where they caught the train, that is where my family is from. The story goes My Mom's step father was with the posse that took some young woman off the train thinking she was Kate but they weren't able to prove it was her. There also is a rather large hair wreath in the museum at Coffeeville, Ks. the flowers in the wreath were made from the hair of the Bender victims that were found in the garden. The stamens of the flowers are all blond and came from the tiny girl victims. People in SW Kansas still tell tales about them.

I tend to agree with you Ron, I have read, and seen documentaries about the old west, and in these were stories about the Benders. In the first place we don't even know if that was their real name, it was very easy to change a name back then. Sometimes your name was changed when you reached America, by sheer accident. Names were often written down by sound, or the person who was asking the questions didn't understand what was said so they just wrote down what they thought they said. Coming from Germany, no one would know what there history was, so no telling what evil they were into there. I can't help but think, this just didn't begin when they got to America. From what I have read etc., they looked for them for some time, and the brother who finally broke the story, would have turned every stone to find them. I believe the four of them split up, at least for a time, the so called sister, and brother went one way, and the mother and father went the other. Names changed, and they were never found, they wouldn't have been known by what they looked like, they were new to America, and most likely wouldn't have any pictures taken. Why would anyone allow these monsters to be buried anywhere around a decent cemetery, especially knowing who they were? Sorry Phyllis, I don't think so. I wrote a book, but so much to say, and hard to break it down. Thanks Ron.

Versions of this story seem to be common in many states along the original wagon trails. Many tales of "Innkeepers" taking in lodgers for the night, murdering them in their sleep, stealing their valuables, and burying the victims beneath the foundations. Rose Wilder Lane (daughter of the famous Laura Ingalls) even writes of hearing such a tale from a coworker in her youth, about a boarding house in Kentucky. She wrote out the story and titled it "Faces in the Window". Great ghost story, and Rose claims it to be completely true.

The Bloody Benders are one of the many strange stories in the old west. About 5 years ago their land came up for sale. We all know that they were never caught and there really is no telling if these Benders are the right ones or not. I do think it would be difficult to change your ways after that and I also agree with you that they would have went by an alias. The only possible thing I could think of that would be on their side is the fact that it was further away. Also the mining communities of Colorado were not well liked by the farmers and ranchers of Kansas and vice versa. They were really two different cultures. The boundaries were even disputed over atone time. That seems like it would be a very minor way of helping them but Colorado was still pretty wild as it was not a state until about three years after the crimes. It's another one of those disputed stories of the old west that will likely never be solved. But it is still fun to entertain and think about and that is how I feel about all of the alternative stories like that.

Sometimes really sickening stuff goes from one generation to the next, until some can come out from under it. I’m sure with the Benders, it’s very likely there were sad stories back in Germany about them.

This was very interesting. Unbelievable that they got away with murder. No one recognized them or identified them after running a store.

I’m so excited to watch this. I actually didn’t know this was so close to where I live. I’m in south central Kansas.

I remember hearing about this case a few years ago. Officially, all stories and reports about this family say they were never seen again after they left town. No one knows what happened to them. I'd like to think you found two of them in the video.

I don't think it is them.

Wicked people always think they're going to get away with their dirty deeds but at the end of the day when you die you're going to go before the Creator and answer for everything you've said and done, so they might think that they've gotten away with it here on Earth but in the long run you don't.

There were rumors that a posse overtook the Benders around northeastern Indian Territory and dispatched them; this was never proven but often discussed (quietly)...

Well if you like the Bender story you’re gonna like this Wednesday at 2 PM coming up. Part two we go to where the cabin was and we found artifacts. Flatware and a spoon and digging for more bodies.
