Back then it was a different time. Child stars from the 70's to 80's could play controversial roles and people would see it as ok. Now in days people are more freaked out about children in such roles so usually when needed they'll either have someone who is let's say 21 play a 13 year old or still have a 13 year old play the role but all the risqué parts have to be done with a body double who is probably older than the actual person. Plus her first film was when she was like 11 and was playing in a true story about the red light district about the life. However, in her nude scenes she did have a body double and her mother was on set when it was filmed along with this movie.

It is crazy to think that they were both stranded on this island as 8 year olds... there was an old guy with them for a little while and he taught them some stuff but then he died... so even though they grow older, because they have no connection to the outside world and can never speak to anyone else or read anything, they can only ever be as smart as their 8-year old selves. They only know as much as what they knew when they were 8 years old, and by the time you are 15 or so, how many memories did you still have from the time you were 8 and younger? They probably have forgot most things, and once a human is cut off from other humankind, they would do anything. They would have no concept of right vs wrong, hygiene, intelligence, etc. except what they learned when they were little. And btw, they were cousins, not brother and sister, which is also weird, but you have to think- the book this movie is based on was written in a time when marrying your own cousing was very common. Heck, FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt were cousins. But it doesn't matter- if you stranded any young male and female together on an island long enough, guaranteed, without fail, they would have sex eventually, related or not. Its just nature
