Omg I love the kid who did the entire essay in “I am Groot” becuase i would totally do that. You ask if which marvel characters are allowed and if there are any restrictions, because Groot and Rocket are my favourite marvel characters in general. Also regarding books for post-secondary, as someone going into university I did an early summer orientation style program that the school offers. One thing that the students who were running it said was exactly what y’all talked about. Wait until the first day of class to buy your books, they are expensive, half the time you won’t use them, and the professors sometimes just provide an online copy.

The college textbook discussion was great! A lot of professors will do just that and instruct you on what to buy/not buy. Hell, I've had professors be like, I scanned the sheet we need from the book and will hand them out when we get to that chapter. Education really do be scamming ppl for something our society needs.

I agree and have had others in my field (Biotech / Biopharma) tell me that a big university or UC system is not really necessary. We all came from different educational backgrounds and grades and still ended up at the same companies. I too like Ash said if I could do it all over again would just go to community college and then transfer to a state school. Universities are more research based and expect (or rather lead) people to research based careers (which don’t pay well), while in me and my friends experiences, state schools will actually teach more practical applications. Plus, universities are sooo expensive. I can fully say that I don’t use my degree in my job and even my boss and employers have told me the requirement of a degree on the job posting is just to prove that you have what it takes to get A Degree. My boss said you could even get a literature degree and get a job in biopharma. Everything I use in my job has been taught on the job. Only my one friend that went to a state college was actually able to apply some of what she learned to the job.

7:31 I can appreciate anyone who looks back at their time and retail and felt like a clown made to dance for peanuts, but there are also a lot of mall employees who are straight-up asshats. I tried to go buy a katamari game at the GameStop in my local mall, and the checkered decided to check my gamer cred and said he wouldn't sell it to me unless I would sing the theme song for him. It was not funny, it was cruel.

It took me a long time to graduate and I have so many bad memories with the textbooks. Specifically with teacher's writing their own textbooks so they had no-resell value or the access number issue Ash described. But yes, wait not just till the first day, wait more like a month before buying a textbook, or even before the first quiz or exam. I had so many experiences where I didn't need the textbook because the prof never referenced to it for exams. Also, nothing wrong with going to a community college first!
@dames01 Жыл бұрын
I doubt this is a case for most universities and colleges, but i know that it isn't recommended to use a textbook from the libary, as my library is only allowed to carry a handful of copies of a textbook(usally only one) that might be in use by other people who have taken it out.

I went to college in a small class of 30. We all collectively decided that non of us were ever going to buy a single textbook and when the teachers and school found out that we were doing that they gave in and just PDF'd the pages that they were going to use for the week and gave us that.

So I’m not really talking about the kind of theft you are, but I worked in a global/chain makeup retail store for 7 years (and worked in retail for 16 years total until the last two years where I now work for a tech company) and we did have some shrinkage built into our payroll, but there were SEVERAL times we got hit by organized retail crime rings and then had our hours drastically slashed over the next several pay periods because of it. Which was stupid because it meant we actually had less floor coverage which made it easier for us to get hit AGAIN a couple weeks later. The best prevention is simply having workers all over (since we can’t and don’t chase after shoplifters for safety). And I guarantee you no one but the store manager, who was never on the floor, was not making much money. I remember every one being so stressed an entire summer because we got hit a few times and had our hours cut so much that we were all financially struggling more than usual. People who had been getting 34 hours a week were getting 20, and others were left off the schedule entirely. Ultimately it was wrong anyway for us to be punished for theft we can’t prevent, and it’s a really crappy way to deal with a loss like that. I’m sure not all “big” stores do the same, but that left a bad feeling all around. Again, not really the type of theft you’re talking about (after all… no one is stealing perfume or mascara out of necessity) but even with global chains, that kind of stuff can still negatively affect the daily workers there.❤

A friend of mine works as a security guard at a grocery store. He looks the other way if people steal a loaf of bread or other simple food items. But he says there's a problem with people stealing large quantities of steaks for re-sell and other things like that. I think you guys are minimizing theft too much. Theft is economically harmful, whether covered by insurance or by shrinkage budgets. The business has to pay for lost goods or for higher insurance premiums, which results in having to raise prices on goods. I can assure you it's not coming out of the CEOs wallet. It's also not unheard of for theft to get so bad in a particular area, that the businesses in that area either close or move, and that kind of an event can really damage that community. I've never met someone who is against someone stealing the bare minimum to survive. But casual stealing of luxury goods or stealing things that someone can actually afford does hurt everyone else, and I would never condone it or call it "a victimless crime".
@stumpt Жыл бұрын
I don't think any of us were talking about people stealing luxury items for resell, who are just stealing to steal. We were all talking about stealing when it comes to necessity. I think we're all on the same page. (Aenne)

I have to pretty heavily disagree on the victimless crime shoplifting discussion. "It's insured" well who do you think is paying for the insurance (and how does that affect the insurance company as well)? The money comes out of someone's pocket somewhere so one can't just act like literal stealing has no effect at all. And although some shoplifting is certainly out of desperation it certainly isn't all or the grocery department would be running way behind the tv/media departments. And we know some people try to steal tvs and ipads. Yes don't risk your life to stop a shoplifter but I think it's a totally different category to cheerlead them on while they do it. O.o
@stumpt Жыл бұрын
I would disagree with this as well. The money comes out of corporations - who don't even pay their workers enough anyway. Corporations aren't something we should be praising. We talked about the difference between small stores and corporate chains. TVs and Ipads are certainly a necessity. Rest and relaxation, and wanting to have some electronics is needed to live in today's world. And I wouldn't say we are cheering people on, it's just that we understand the complications living in the USA with our current government and we think all people should be able to make a living wage and survive. And if they can't - well I'm not going to shame them (Aenne)
@FDog16 Жыл бұрын
I don't know about USA. But I always stand against slolen stuff here in Russia. In first, stolen stuff will be pay-cut from workers. Who work hard 12-18 per day 7 days a week. Second, it always or alcohols or gums/candys (by teenagers).
