2nd (to none) South Caroline String Band. Today's music (hip hop/ rap) is empty, talentless, and tasteless, BUT these ol' songs have a flavor of yesteryear and fill the imagination of what might have been 170 (or so) years ago. The music has a spirit, energy, feeling of a younger nation. Great job fellas in keeping the spirit alive.

The boatman dance, the boatman sing, The boatman do ‘most anything, And when the boatman get on shore, He spends his cash and works for more. Chorus: Dance, boatman, dance, dance, boatman, dance, Dance all night till the broad daylight, Go home with the gals in the morning. Hi, ho, the boatman row, Sailing down the river on the Ohio, Hi, ho, the boatman row, Sailing down the river on the Ohio, The boatman is a thrifty man, There’s none can do as the boatman can. I never saw a pretty girl in my life But that she was a boatman’s wife. I went on board the other day To see what the boatman had to say, And there I let my passion loose; They crammed me in the calaboose. When you go to the boatman’s ball, Dance with your wife or not at all. Sky-blue jacket, tarpaulin hat, Look out, boys, for the nine-tailed cat. When the boatman blows his horn, Look out, old man, your daughter’s gone. He stole my sheep, he stole my goat, He put ’em in a bag and took ’em to the boat.

Hmmmmm.... Not a bad idea. Let me think on it. In the meantime... just for you, Bazar... THE BOATMAN’S SONG Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river in a big bateau. The boatman dance. The boatman sing. The boatman huff to everyt’ing. An’ when the boatman gets on shore, he spend his money, then works for more. Chorus: Dance, boatman, dance ! Oh, dance, boatman, dance ! Oh, dance all night ’til the broad daylight ! Go home with the gals in the morning ! Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river to O-hi-o. The boatman, he should keep to shore. The fishin’ smack should venture more. The schooner sail before the whine. The steamboat leave a streak behind. Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river in a big bateau. I went on board the other day, jus’ to see what the boatman had to say. There I let my passion loose. They clapped me in the calaboose ! Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river to O-hi-o. I come this time… I’ll come no more. Let me loose, I’ll go to shore. With the whole horse and the bully crew. A hoosier maid, and the cap’n too ! Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river in a big bateau. When you go to the boatman’s ball, dance with my wife or not at all. Sky-blue jacket and a tarpaulin hat. Watch out, boys, for the nine-tail cat ! Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river to O-hi-o. The boatman, he’s a thrifty man. There’s none can do like the boatman can. I never seen a pretty girl in my life, but that she was a boatman’s wife ! Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho! The boatman go… floatin’ down the river in a big bateau. When the boatman blows his horn, look out, old man, your sheep is gone. He stole my sheep ! He stole my shoat ! He put ‘em in a bag, an’ tote ‘em to the boat ! Chorus ~ Hi ! Ho!
