and still many people are saying that it wasn't realistic and that the white TBT writers don't get it. I don't get it...

Horrendously tackled though. The writer's didn't know what they were talking about. Embarrassing...

I so feel Kat, that topic really should really be discussed with her parents

The world has a way of reminding you who you are. I get that they didn’t want her to be bound by her race, but racist people do not see people of color as Americans. She is part black and part white. You cannot deny this. The sooner she accepts this the better.

her mother is so selfish for denying her her racial and cultural identity bc of her insecurities

This scene makes no sense. So because her parents didn't want her to grow up with racialize identity, that's suppose to explain why she doesn't know ANYTHING about her black side of the family? It sounds like she never even met anyone from her father side of her family.

Are you biracial? I am! We are always forced to choose. I look hispanic so neither my black nor white side claims me. Try living like that and then being told to pick a side and see how you feel! It is almost as if being biracial is a sin!

River and Maria no. I am not biracial. I'm black. I get what you are saying but what does it have to do with this scene ? I mean I just said I don't get why people are complaining about this scene. What did they do wrong ? (And I'm wondering that since I'm not biracial).

Mankey Dumpty The issue with this scene and the episode is that it is not realistic. Her parents should not be made the bad guys for wanting their child to be seen for her qualities and not for someone who has a black dad and a white mom. If you watch the entire episode she is pressured by Alex to choose to represent black women. Look at my icon. My mum is white and my dad is black. Should I not have that option? Well if I were to put down I was the first black Social Media Director then I would be opening myself up to colorism attacks. Doesn't make sense since I am just like Kat only lighter? This episode failed to start a conversation. Instead it just gave an unrealistic solution that not every biracial has the option of taking!

River and Maria thank you for the explanation. I see people complaining about this all the time but they don't even explain why. I understand now what you are saying. Also, I watched your reaction video where you say why it annoyed you. That was good. I agree with you, Kat's parents shouldn't be made the bad guys for that because they are the ones in the right. Nobody has the right to judge someone else by their skin colour. It's what inside that matters as Kat said :) . But this is also not realistic. In reality it's not what's inside or qualities that matters when what people only see is colour in real life. I know that some other people didn't like this episode because they thought Kat's parents were some wild folk not to have made their daughter seen colour before to prepare her for what she would face in the world : racism and what you are talking about in your reaction video. To them it wasn't realistic for that reason. I don't know if you know the show Black ish but in that show there's a biracial character who has a white dad that told her he sees her as a black woman. Why ? Because people chose for him since her kid was little that she was black. Because they would never think the guy was her real father.

Mankey Dumpty yep Tracee Ellis Ross plays the mother in blackish. She is beautiful and biracial and the daughter of Diana Ross. Every parent struggles with their mixed kids because for a long time interracial marriage was taboo. It has come a long way but we still have a lot more to go. If Tracee's character had whiter skin what do you think the conversation would have been? Could she be in Blackish? In the show her husband is often mocked for favoring lightened skinned women. It's sad.
