Cards from friends make such sentimental bookmarks. Great idea! It's nice to see all those teaching notes. I can imagine it's much easier to keep the notes in the book rather than having tons and tons of extra papers. Thanks for the tag!

Hi Christopher. Thanks for commenting. Truthfully, I had lots and lots of papers for every book that I taught too--usually at least a whole folder of handouts and a whole spiral notebook per book that I taught. But it helped to annotate the books so that I could easily find the passages that we were going to talk about. When I retired, I left my folders and notebooks with the younger colleagues who could appreciate them. And I still filled two dumpsters with notes that no one else would probably ever be able to use and that I didn't want to bring home and try to find space for. It was a long teaching career!

Good day, Pat. A friend's husband would break the spine of a new book and throw away the dust jacket. Both drove collector and used bookstore owners nuts, especially if the book was a first edition from a writer whose books were in demand or collectible. The other was clipping the price off a corner.

Ah! A tag after my heart. 1) I also try very hard not to break the spine but I found that a recently purchased copy of Lonesome Dove that the book does not feel very sturdy. 2) Bookmarks. good. Dog-earing bad! 3) I feel the pain if there is an accidental tear or rip in the pages. 4) I do not tend to write in a book but have on a very rare occasion. 5) No. Ripping. allowed. (I remember seeing books with torn covers or covers ripped off at discount stores) 6) not applicable 😜 I would add this one. Eating and drinking while reading... not a fan. mostly because I am clumsy and make messes easily. I definitely think "working copies" get to follow different rules than personal copies. Well loved copies tell a story all their own. ❤ Fun Thumbnail Pat

When clearing out my parents' home we all took what books we wanted, but many (MANY) more were in rough shape. We inquired at the local recycling center and were told that in order to recycle the books, the hardbacks would have to be removed (and discarded). I can still remember the feeling of ripping covers off of hundreds of books. 😢

This was a fun tag. When I was a bookseller, we had to return some Oxford World Classics as they were reusing them with new covers. We only had to tear out the title page to send back, so staff were allowed to keep the rest and I had so many at one time! Great Tag Pat! Loved your responses, especially as an ex-English teacher. Most of my books looked bloodied, battered, bruised and torn when I was done with them, but blood well worth spent. 😀Writing in books as a teacher is about healing, nurturing, learning, growth, passion...definitely not murder! 😄I think I would have loved to have you as an English teacher, so insightful and passionate.

@@BookChatWithPat8668 You remind me of someone, a mentor, teacher, headmaster, he literally healed kids at the school. He was so full of fire and passion he turned a broken school of addicts and dropouts into A+ human beings. I went on the journey with him as English teacher and Head of Sports. I was told by the previous PE teacher that it was a lost cause and that any kind of physical education was a lost cause. I took over the reigns, started a soccer team (playing with one or two at first), before the year was done we had a soccer, basketball, swimming, netball and volleyball team.

@@BookChatWithPat8668 I didn't! Annotations feel so personal - like a treasure in getting to see how another brain processed/interpreted the text. I love footnotes in books. Annotations feel like they add to the reading experience. I think a broken spine indicates an intimate relationship with a book. I purchased a used copy of a well loved Bel Canto. The tattered cover and broken spine made the book less precious and the reading experience more intimate because I didn't have to be careful with keeping the book intact.
